A new innovated and cheep model in building artificial reefs OceanDocs

A novel and cheep approach for building artificial reefs was designed in such a way that sediments in an area of high sedimentation rate will be utilized in building the artificial substrate with no further sediment accumulation afterwards. The model consists of several steel cylinders which are soldered together in such a way to form a reef flat, a gentle slope and a steep slope, with two layers of narrow opening meshes (a lower plastic and an upper metallic one). Within a short periode (3 months), a substrate layer of a total of ~ 1 cm was formed between the two meshes, this layer increased to ~2 cm after 9 months. The Water Framework Directive requires the development of biological tools which can act as early-warning indicators of a sudden increase (accidental pollution) or decrease (recovery due to prevention) of the chemical status of aquatic systems. Beneficial Effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on the Follicular Survival in the Mouse Ovary after Transplantation OAK

A large proportion of follicles are lost during the initial ischemia that occurs after transplantation of ovarian tissues. Thus, the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) on the follicular loss of ovarian tissues after transplantation was examined in mice. Ovarian slices from ICR mice were transplanted under the kidney capsule in ovariectomized ICR. Hyperbaric oxygen with 100% oxygen was initiated for 30 min at 2.5 atmospheres absolute immediately after transplantation, and this treatment was repeated at 48-h intervals for 2 weeks. The cryopreservation of ovarian tissues is a technology with significant potential for the preservation of the genetic resource materials of working dogs, including guide dogs for the blind. Dynamics of Forage Production in Pasture-woodlands of the Swiss Jura Mountains under Projected Climate Change Scenarios Ecology and Society
Silvopastoral systems of the Swiss Jura Mountains serve as a traditional source of forage and timber in the subalpine vegetation belt, but their vulnerability to land use and climate change puts their future sustainability at stake. We coupled experimental and modeling approaches to assess the impact of climate change on the pasture-woodland landscape. We drew conclusions on the resistance potential of wooded pastures with different management intensities by sampling along a canopy cover gradient. The effect of intraperitoneal administration of desialylated erythropoietin (asialo EPO) on the follicular reserve of cryopreserved canine ovarian tissues was examined using non obese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice was examined. Vitrified-warmed canine ovarian tissues were placed under the dorsal skin of mice, and were then treated with saline or 400 or 4,000 U/kg/day of asialo EPO by intraperitoneal injection from one day before transplantation for 5 days. The electrophysiological properties of nodose ganglion neurons were evaluated immediately after removing nodose ganglia from young adult rats and 3 to 10 days after nodose ganglia implantation _either alone or co-implanted with carotid bodies_ onto the chick chorioallantoic membrane. Implanted and co-implanted nodose neurons were less excitable than acutely recorded nodose neurons. Hemic proliferative disease in the bay mussel, Mytilus edulis, has been studied following mortalities in Washington State (USA). The disease has been reproduced in the labortory. Follicular Loss of the Cryopreserved Canine Ovary after Xenotransplantation OAK

The effect of cryopreservation and subsequent xenotransplantation on the follicular reserve of the canine ovary by using non obese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice was examined. Vitrified-warmed canine ovarian tissues were placed into the ovarian bursa of mice, and then were removed and subjected to histological examination at 4 weeks after the transplantation. Over 30% of primordial follicles and 65% of early primary follicles survived after cryopreservation. However, regardless of breed or age, percentages of survived primordial follicles and early primary follicles after the transplantation ranged from 0-7% and from 0-15%, respectively. In situ kinetics of mercury bioaccumulation in mytilus galloprovincialis estimated by transplantation experiments ArchiMer

Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. For this purpose, studying mercury dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. In situ experiments on uptake and elimination kinetics were conducted in three Mediterranean sites, chosen on the basis of their contamination levels. Mussels were transplanted from a clean area to a highly contaminated one and then transferred back to a clean site. This approach makes it possible to define bioaccumulation factors and uptake and elimination rates consistently with the real environmental conditions.

Objective: To disclose a new biotechnique, listing some of its aspects and addressing its main stages, isolation, cryopreservation and culture of preantral follicles. Data Sources: The information was obtained from CAB, MEDLINE, PUBMED, Science Direct and CAPES Portal. Data Synthesis: The preantral follicles store about 90% of the oocytes within the ovary. The biotechnique described is based on recovering immature oocytes retained inside preantral follicles before atresia takes place. New strategies in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: G-CSF-mobilized unprocessed whole blood BJMBR

Transplantation of mobilized peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) for rescue of bone marrow function after high-dose chemo-/radiotherapy is widely used in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. Mobilization of stem cells to the peripheral blood can be achieved by cytokine treatment of the patients. The main advantage of autologous PBSC transplantation over bone marrow transplantation is the faster recovery of neutrophil and platelet counts. The threshold number of PBSC required for adequate rescue of bone marrow is thought to be about 2 x 106 CD34+ cells/kg, if the stem cells are collected by leukapheresis and subsequently cryopreserved.
