The present study examined the inactivation effect of ultraviolet (UV) light on the conidia of Botrytis cinerea Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. herbarum and Pestalotiopsis clavispora, common pathogens of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), often found as epiphytes. The fungi were grown at 20°C in acidified potato dextrose agar (APDA) in the dark; conidial suspensions (10(6) conidia mL-1) were placed the bottom of 5 cm glass Petri plates with a maximum height of 0.5 mm. Uncovered plates were immediately exposed to either UVA (λ = 361 nm), UVB (λ = 302 nm) or UVC (λ = 254 nm) at doses between 40 and 110 mJcm². With the advance of our knowledge in cutaneous photochemistry, photobiology and photomedicine over the past four decades, the terrestrial solar radiation has become a concern of dermatologists and is considered to be a major damaging environmental factor for our skin. The intensity of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) has increased on the Earth´s surface due to the stratospheric ozone depletion, causing an adverse effect on a wide range of species, such as morphological, physiological, and biochemical alterations. This research studied the intraspecific photosensitivity of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings exposed to UV-B. Simple methodology for methylmercury and inorganic mercury determination by high performance liquid chromatography-cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

An analytical methodology was developed to separate and quantify methylmercury (MeHg) and inorganic mercury by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS). The use of UV oxidation of the organic forms of mercury, the tin(II) chloride reduction in acidic medium of mercury and the introduction of a water vapour trap based on H2SO4/CaCl2 resulted in a low detection limit (DL) (10 +/- 2 pg, mean value +/- S.D.).
