Agricultura de base ecológica em sistemas urbanos: potencialidades, limitações e experiências. Infoteca-e
MACHADO, C. T. de T.; MACHADO, A. T..
ABSTRACT: Urban agriculture conducted with ecological principles is an alternative to produce healthy food, but it demands planning and suitable technologies. This ecological approach must be based on crop diversity, organnic or mineral fertilizers from natural origin and control of pests and diseases by non-toxic means. Cultivation of different species is the guarantee of food richness and offer of varied products. Composts, biofertilizers and green manure are presented as organic nutriet resources. Bio-insecticides, natural enemies and utilization of botanic preparations constitute suitable pest and disease. management strategies to urban agriculture. The international experiences treat about application of these principles on feed production,...

Aphididae (Hemiptera) on ornamental plants in Córdoba (Argentina) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Szpeiner,Alfonsina.
In 30 surveys across Cordoba city and surroundings (Argentina) I recorded, from November 2001 to May 2002, a total of 109 ornamental plants infested with aphid colonies. Surveys were conducted in the local botanical garden as well as homestead gardens and nurseries. Seventeen species of aphids were identified, 4 of which are new species in the area, from 47 ornamental plants. In a total of 59 plant/aphid associations, 38 new associations were found. I present the first record of aphids colonizing Cactaceae in Argentina. Most aphid colonies were medium and a high proportion (more than 40%) showed alate individuals. The most frequent aphid species, Aphis gossypii Glover and Aphis craccivora Koch were especially associated with the most frequent damages:...

Bushmeat networks link the forest to urban areas in the trifrontier region between Brazil, Colombia, and Peru Ecology and Society

Recent studies have intended to quantify urban consumption and trade in Amazonian towns. However, little is still known about the different ways in which bushmeat is made available in urban areas, including commercial and noncommercial flows, and how those flows contribute to link forests to urban livelihoods. In this study we qualitatively describe the structure and functioning of bushmeat flows in terms of species, catchment area, stakeholders involved, and the motivations for their activity in the main towns of the Amazon trifrontier region between Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. We show that bushmeat trade to urban areas exists under an organized but invisible commodity chain providing a source of income to about 195 persons. Bushmeat is made available...

Carrapatos de área urbana: um estudo sobre sazonalidade e infecção por rickettsia / urban area ticks: a study about seasonality and rickettsial infection. Repositório Alice
MATIAS, J.; BLECHA, I. M. Z.; KOLLER, W. W.; GARCIA, M. V.; STEVE-GASSENT, M. D.; BARROS, J. C.; ANDREOTTI, R..
This study was made in an urban forest fragment in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Midwest of Brazil. During a three year period, from 2012 to 2015, the presence of tick species in the environment (vegetation and soil), their seasonality and the occurrence of rickettsial infection in ticks was investigated. 1219 samples were collected, from which 1045 belonged to the Amblyomma sculptum species and 174 belonged to the Amblyomma dubitatum species. The A. sculptum species presented its main annual peak in the periods when rainfall and temperature were the highest, while the A. dubitatum species presented a higher population level in the following season. However, the A. sculptum population decreased during the second year of the study, probably due to...

DESIGUALDADE ENTRE RICOS E POBRES NO ACESSO À EDUCAÇÃO NO BRASIL RURAL E URBANO AgEcon

Murrugara, Edmundo; Valdivia, Martin.

Nature-based solutions promoting green and blue urban areas have significant potential to decrease the vulnerability and enhance the resilience of cities in light of climatic change. They can thereby help to mitigate climate change-induced impacts and serve as proactive adaptation options for municipalities. We explore the various contexts in which nature-based solutions are relevant for climate mitigation and adaptation in urban areas, identify indicators for assessing the effectiveness of nature-based solutions and related knowledge gaps. In addition, we explore existing barriers and potential opportunities for increasing the scale and effectiveness of nature-based solution implementation. The results were derived from an inter- and transdisciplinary...

Presence of Plebeia aff. flavocincta Nests in urban areas. Repositório Alice
RIBEIRO, M. de F.; TAURA, T. A..
This study was performed in 2009, 2015 and 2018, at urban areas of Petrolina (state of Pernambuco) and Juazeiro (state of Bahia), at the São Francisco valley, Brazilian Northeast. Trees were identified and investigated for the presence of Plebeia aff. flavocincta nests, in three years: 2009, 2015 and 2018. Data on height at nest entrance (HNE), tree diameter at nest entrance (DNE) and tree diameter at breast height (DBH) were obtained. Trees containing nests were identified and geo-referenced. In Petrolina and Juazeiro, the percentage of bees nests in all checked trees was smaller in 2009 (3.94% and 0.56%) than in 2015 (1.92% and 5.26%) and in 2018 (21.21% and 3.66%). This increase (especially in Petrolina) suggests P. aff. flavocincta is well adapted to...

The population ecology of Securidaca longepedunculata Fresen. in the Nylsvley Nature Reserve, Limpopo Province, South Africa Phyton
Tshisikhawe,MP; Baloyi,O; Ligavha-Mbelengwa,MH; Bhat,RB.
Securidaca longepedunculata Fresen., commonly known as the violet tree, belongs to the family Polygalaceae. It is widely distributed in tropical Africa, Mozambique, as well as in the North- West and Limpopo provinces of South Africa. The Vhavenda people use the roots of this species as an aphrodisiac. The species is co-dominant in the savanna vegetation of the Nylsvley Nature Reserve. This research looked at the ecology of the study species within the Nylsvley Nature Reserve because of its importance there. Understanding the population structure and environmental factors that impact on the species might help in assessing the population in urban areas. The population of the study species in the reserve displayed an adequate growth curve, when looking at its...
