Biological Activity of Piper aduncum extracts on Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) and Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
LUCENA,DAIANE C.; BERTHOLDO-VARGAS,LUCIA R.; SILVA,WILSON C.; MACHADO,AARON F.; LOPES,TAMIRIS S.; MOURA,SIDNEI; BARROS,NEIVA M..
ABSTRACT Piper aduncum found naturally in the Amazon and southeastern Brazil, is known for its secondary metabolites that have activity on insects. Anticarsia gemmatalis and Spodoptera frugiperda are among the major insect pests associated with agricultural production. This research evaluated the biological activity of hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of P. aduncum leaves on mortality and duration of larval and pupal periods, as well as weight, width, and length of A. gemmatalis and S. frugiperda pupae. The mortality of A. gemmatalis larvae in trials with P. aduncum extracts were 93.3% (hexane) and 90% (ethyl acetate), estimating LC50 of 6.35 and 5.79 mg/mL, respectively. Mortality in S. frugiperda submitted to the hexane extract ranged from...

Biology of Anticarsia gemmatalis on soybean genotypes with different degrees of resistance to insects Scientia Agricola
Fugi,Cristina Gomes Quevedo; Lourenção,André Luiz; Parra,José Roberto Postali.
A knowledge of the mechanisms of resistance present in genetic materials should help breeding programs in developing cultivars resistant to insects. The biology of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was studied on leaves of four soybean genotypes with different degrees of resistance to insects. The genotypes evaluated were cultivars IAC 17 and IAC 24, resistant to defoliators and stink bugs, line PI 229358, a source of multiple resistance to insects and used as parent in various lines selected for resistance to A. gemmatalis, and 'IAC PL-1', the susceptible control. The experiments were carried out in the laboratory, under controlled conditions of temperature (25 ± 2ºC), relative humidity (60 ± 10%) and photoperiod (14h). First instar...

Characterization of a Chrysodeixis includens nucleopolyhedrovirus Isolate from Brazilian Cerrado and Assessment of its Co-Infection with Anticarsia gemmatalis multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus BABT
Sanches,Márcio Martinello; Sihler,William; Silva,Cláudia Efigênia Pereira; Guimarães,Giovana Curcio; Benito,Norton Polo; Sosa-Gómez,Daniel Ricardo; de Souza,Marlinda Lobo.
Abstract Chrysodeixis includens has become the major Lepidopteran pest of soybean crops, especially in the Brazilian Cerrado (savanna) region. A native isolate of Chrysodeixis includens nucleopolyhedrovirus (ChinNPV) from this region, Buritis, MG, was assessed for its biological and molecular features. In addition, in vitro co-infection with Anticarsia gemmatalis multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgMNPV), another virus of an important soybean pest, was tested. The ChinNPV-Buritis isolate presented an average LC50 of 7,750 occlusion bodies (OBs)/ml of diet in C. includens larvae. Analysis of restriction endonuclease profiles of viral DNA revealed similarities with previously described ChinNPV isolates IE, IF, and IG from Brazil, although the presence of...

Detection of cry1 genes in Bacillus thuringiensis isolates from South of Brazil and activity against Aanticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae) BJM
Bobrowski,Vera Lucia; Pasquali,Giancarlo; Bodanese-Zanettini,Maria Helena; Fiuza,Lidia Mariana.
The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is characterized by its ability to produce proteic crystalline inclusions during sporulation. Cry1 protein has insecticidal activity and is highly specific to certain insects and not toxic to unrelated insects, plants or vertebrates. In this work, the patogenicity of twelve Bt isolates was tested against Anticarsia gemmatalis, one of the most important insect pests of soybeans. Spore-crystal complex was applied to the surface of artificial diets and the mortality of A. gemmatalis larvae was assessed seven days after each treatment. When compared to a control Bt isolate known by its high toxicity to A. gemmatalis larvae, four novel Bt isolates exhibited even higher toxic activities against the insect, resulting in...

Do different casein concentrations increase the adverse effect of rutin on the biology of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)? Neotropical Entomology
Salvador,Mariana C; Boiça Jr,Arlindo L; Oliveira,Maria C N De; Graça,José P Da; Silva,Débora M Da; Hoffmann-Campo,Clara B.
The flavonoid rutin is recognized as playing an important role in the protection of plants against lepidopterans. Bioassays with this compound are generally carried out using artificial diets. Proteins of high energy value, such as casein, are important ingredients of insect artificial diets as a source of essential amino acids. However, such proteins can generally increase the allelochemical activity. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of rutin on larvae of the velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner by incorporating this allelochemical into diets with different concentrations of casein. Three casein concentrations (0, 7 g, or 14 g) combined with none, 0.65%, or 1.30% of rutin were added to the rearing diet and offered to the larvae...

The initial effects of the infection by AgMNPV in the total and differential counts of the hemocytes in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae were studied. The total number of the hemocytes did not decrease in infected larvae, as it occurred in non infected larvae. In infected larvae, the hemocyte types showed the following frequencies: plasmatocytes - 47.8%, esferulocytes - 25.9%, granulocytes - 15.8%, oenocytoids - 7.2%, prohemocytes - 2.8%, vermicytes - 0,5%. Only the percentage of the granulocytes was different among infected and non infected larvae, indicating that these cells responded quickly to the initial viral infection. These results showed the effective role of the hemocytes in the response of the A. gemmatalis to the infection...

Piubelli,Giorla C.; Moscardi,Flávio; Hoffmann-Campo,Clara B..
Anticarsia gemmatalis nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgMNPV) is being used in Brazil as a biological insecticide. Host plant resistance of soybean to insects is been searched for and some authors have mentioned the interference of plant chemistry in virus efficiency. Interactions among soybean extracts of genotypes used as a source of resistance (PI 274454 and PI 227687) with different AgMNPV concentrations in populations of A. geatalis susceptible (S) and resistant (R) to the virus were studied at laboratory condition. Higher mortality was observed when larvae fed on diets with extracts of the soybean genotypes compared with those fed on a plain diet (control). The mean lethal concentration (LC50) was reduced about 10 ties in the S-population fed on diets...

Morphological study of the hindgut in larvae of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Neotropical Entomology
Levy,Sheila M.; Falleiros,Ângela M.F.; Moscardi,Flávio; Gregório,Elisa A.; Toledo,Luis A..
The velvetbean caterpillar (Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner) has great economical interest as it affects the soybean crop worldwide. This work describes the morphology of the hindgut in A. gemmatalis larvae emphasizing their histological aspects. Distinct morphological regions, identified as pylorus, ileum, colon and rectum, constitute the hindgut of A. gemmatalis. A thin cuticular intima, a simple epithelium and muscular layer compose the hindgut wall, independent of the region. Microspines project from the cuticular intima in the posterior interstitial ring, between the midgut and the hindgut, and the posterior pyloric region. A single circular layer of large fibers, differing from the other hindgut regions that present two layers of muscular fibers, forms...

Production of nuclear polyhedrosis virus of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae): effect of vírus dosage, host density and age Anais da SEB
Moscardi,Flávio; Leite,Luiz G.; Zamataro,Carlos E..
The laboratory production of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AgNPV) was evaluated for larvae inoculated at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 cm and with two NPV dosages, 10(6) and 10(7) polyhedron inclusion bodies (PIB)/ml, sprayed on the insect diet surface. A fixed population of 25 larvae/300-ml cup was used. Highest virus yield was achieved for larvae inoculated with ca. 2.0 cm at the higher NPV dosage. Losses of NPV-inoculated larvae ranged from 42.4% to 64%, due to high incidence of canibalism, death by other causes, and pupation. In another experiment, larvae were inoculated with two NPV dosages (1.0 x 10(7) and 4.0 x 10(7) PIB/ml), using 25,20, and 15 larvae/cup at the beginning of 4th instar (B4L); end of 4th instar (E4L); beginning...
