A new alpheid shrimp (Crustacea: Decapoda: Alpheidae) from South Vietnam Naturalis
Nguyên Van Xuân.
A new alpheid shrimp, Thuylamea camelus gen. nov. & spec. nov., from Dong Hoa, a coastal community of Can Gio district, and northwest of Vung Tau (Cap St. Jacques), Vietnam, is described and illustrated. The new genus appears not to be closely related to any of the previously described genera. It has the postero-dorsal margin of the carapace armed with two high and short crests which are slightly outward inclined and directed backward, and between these crests with a low but distinct conical spine, and an elevated conical boss in the anterior median area slightly behind the anterior margin of the first abdominal somite.

A Review of Two Payment Schemes for Watershed Services from China and Vietnam: the Interface of Government Control and PES Theory Ecology and Society
Kolinjivadi, Vijay K; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR); vijay.kolinjivadi@mail.mcgill.ca; Sunderland, Terry; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR); T.Sunderland@cgiar.org.
China and Vietnam have developed some of the most ambitious payments for ecosystem services (PES) initiatives for watershed conservation and forest management. These include the Sloping Land Conversion Programme in China and pilot projects designed to implement Decision 380 and the subsequent national PES law in Vietnam. This study reviews how these two government-driven initiatives are achieving their environment and development objectives in terms of their institutional arrangements, implementation in practice, and sustainability prospects. Although it remains too soon to determine the effects of these programs on watershed services, early evidence indicates that they are resulting in vulnerable land being retired from cultivation supported, in some...

A taxonomic revision of Actinidiaceae of Vietnam Naturalis
Cuong, N.M.; Soejarto, D.D.; Li, J..
Taxonomic study of morphological variability using multivariate analysis, together with field studies and literature review clarified the status of a number of paired species of Saurauia and Actinidia of Vietnam and resolved their correct nomenclature: Saurauia tristyla is different from S. roxburghii; Saurauia petelotii is not a synonym of S. fasciculata but is a separate species; Actinidia tonkinensis is a synonym of A. latifolia; Actinidia indochinensis is a distinct species, not a variety of A. callosa; Saurauia dillenioides is a synonym of S. armata; and Saurauia griffithii var. annamica is a synonym of S. napaulensis. Four taxa of Actinidia are newly recorded for Vietnam. The results of this study will allow us to better understand the conservation...

Agricultural Commercialization in the Uplands of Northern Vietnam: How to Achieve Both Poverty Reduction and Environmental Sustainability Goals? AgEcon
Keil, Alwin; Saint-Macary, Camille; Zeller, Manfred.
Income growth and urbanization in developing countries have enlarged markets for highvalue agricultural commodities. However, there are concerns that lacking access to physical, financial, and human capital, as well as infrastructure and institutions limit the ability of the poor to participate in and benefit from such commercial agricultural activities. There may further be a trade-off between wealth enhancing effects of intensive commercial agriculture and adverse long-term effects on farmers’ livelihoods due to natural resource degradation. This study provides empirical evidence on these crucial issues and derives related policy recommendations using the example of Vietnam. Here, economic growth has boosted the demand for animal products and,...

Agricultural producer support estimates for developing countries : measurement issues and evidence from India, Indonesia, China, and Vietnam AgEcon
Orden, David; Cheng, Fuzhi; Nguyen, Hoa; Grote, Ulrike; Thomas, Marcelle; Mullen, Kathleen; Sun, Dongsheng.
The levels of support that trade and domestic farm policies afford to agriculture, and the related processes of policy reform intended to improve the economic efficiency of agricultural production, processing, and marketing, are important issues for developing countries. The effects of policy on agriculture are well documented for wealthy countries, especially by the established and respected studies from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. However, systematic analysis is often lacking for poor countries because of the difficulty and cost of measuring policy effects consistently over time and across commodities. This study contributes to filling the existing research gap by examining the impacts of agricultural policies and policy...

Agricultural Sciences in Upland Northern Vietnam: Situating Research in a Dynamic Environment AgEcon
Friedrichsen, Rupert.
This paper aims to provide an introductory overview over the socio-cultural context of Northern Vietnam to agricultural researchers. The paper focuses on the interplay between Vietnam's lowlands and the uplands to specify what makes the Northern uplands a distinct region; as an object of empirical agricultural research and as a context of application of research results. The paper reviews the developments of selected social institutions from pre-colonial times to the current era of "renovation". First, developments in Vietnam's legal and administrative structures are outlined. Second, education and higher education, particularly the agricultural sciences, are discussed. The third and main part elaborates on social, political, and economic specifics of...

Amorphophallus kienluongensis (Araceae), a new species from the Mekong Delta, Southern Vietnam Naturalis
Nguyen, V.D.; Luu, H.T.; Nguyen, Q.D.; Hetterscheid, W.L.A..
Amorphophallus kienluongensis is described as a new species from southern Vietnam. It is morphologically close to A. brevispathus Gagnep. (Thailand) and A. prolificus Hett. & A.Galloway (Thailand). However, it differs from both these species by a stigma with a central depression and an obconic male portion. So far A. kienluongensis is known only from the Kien Luong district of the Kien Giang province, southern Vietnam. The plant grows on limestone hills where its habitat is under threat owing to quarrying for cement manufacture. Therefore this species could be ranked as CR (‘critically endangered’) in the IUCN ranking.

An Economic Study of Small Pigholders in Vietnam: Some Insights Gained and the Scope for Further Research AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Some relevant background to this research project is provided by outlining selected features of Vietnam’s pig industry. Then the main findings (in the view of the author) from this ACIAR-funded research are presented. These results include (1) natural protection given to Vietnam’s pig producers from imports as a result of the nature of the preferences of Vietnamese consumers: (2) the importance of household labour, especially that provided by females, in the husbandry of pigs held by households; (3) the existence, or otherwise, of scale economies as a function of the number of pigs held by households, (4) the import dependence for pig food of Vietnam’s pig industry and the way in which it varies with the number of pigs kept by households; (5)...

Analysis of Country of Origin Labeling for Food Products in Taiwan Using Auction Experiment with Tasting AgEcon
Chern, Wen S.; Lin, Huei-Ching.
This study attempts to evaluate the economic benefits of the country of origin labeling (COOL) in Taiwan. A Vickrey second-price sealed-bid auction was conducted to estimate the consumer’s willingness to pay for Taiwan products vs. those from China and Vietnam. Our experiment was designed to investigate the impacts of product tasting on bidding behavior. The regression results show that tasting raised bids for Taiwan and China teas, but lowered bids for Vietnam tea. The econometric results show very high premiums for Taiwan products. Taiwanese consumers and food producers stand to benefit greatly with COOL.
