The study of a few agronomic techniques that optimizes water use can generate technologies for mitigating the effects of climatic variations on coffee crops. Scarcity of freshwater due to recurrent drought threatens the sustainable crop production in semi-arid regions of Ethiopia. Deficit irrigation is thought to be one of the promising strategies to increase water use efficiency (WUE) under scarce water resources. A study was carried out to investigate the effect of alternate furrow irrigation (AFI), deficit irrigation (DI) and full irrigation (FI) on marketable fruit yield, WUE and physio-chemical quality of four fresh-market tomato cultivars (Fetan, Chali, Cochoro and ARP Tomato d2) in 2013 and 2014. ABSTRACT: Concerns with water crisis involve all sectors of society and irrigated agriculture remains the main water consumer. This study evaluated an agricultural production system for lettuce cultivation in greenhouse, “organic potponics”, to economize water and manure use, using a Simplified Irrigation Controller (SIC), based on soil matric potential monitoring. Five irrigation volumes were evaluated in pots with 4.8 L, fertilized with 200 g of vermicompost. One of the volumes was controlled with the SIC. The other volumes represented 130, 80, 60 and 33 % of that controlled by the SIC and all treatments received water at the same time. Resumo: A irregularidade na distribuição das chuvas, aliado as distintas características edafoclimáticas das regiões semiáridas, torna laboriosa a produção de forragem em quantidade e qualidade. Nesse sentido, se faz necessário o estudo de diferentes gramíneas com potencial de adaptação e que atendam aos diferentes níveis tecnológicos de utilização da terra. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar as características estruturais de cinco gramíneas forrageiras tropicais: Búffel (Cenchrus ciliares); Paiaguás e Piatã (Brachiaria brizantha); Massai e Tamani (Panicum maximum) sob regime de baixo nível tecnológico de utilização da terra, em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis repetições (vasos).

Charging for irrigation water: The issues and options, with a case study from Iran AgEcon

Inadequate funding for maintenance of irrigation works and emerging shortages of water are prevalent. The use of water charges to generate resources for maintenance and to reduce demand is widely advocated. Examples from other utilities, and from the domestic/industrial sectors of water supply suggest the approach could be effective. In developing countries, the facilities required for measured and controlled delivery of irrigation are rarely in place, and would require a massive investment in physical, legal and administrative infrastructure. Greenhouse production of vegetables is widely used throughout the world. Elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in these closed environments can increase net photosynthesis and yield. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment and water supply on the growth of potted bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants, cultivated under controlled environmental conditions. Economics of Reduced Water Allocations: Estimating Impacts on the Northern Victorian Dairy Industry AgEcon

Water use efficiency data was used to estimate the impact of reducing sales water allocations on a range of irrigated dairy farms categorised according to intensity of water right. The expected deficiency in available water was estimated for each farm category on the basis of historical demand for sales and the potential production loss estimated. The cost of substitution through management options of purchasing 1) water right (with associated sales), 2) temporary sales water, or 3) feed supplements as grain or hay and silage was calculated.
