Agricultural nitrogen losses are the major contributor to nitrogen loads in the Mississippi River, and consequently, to the existence of a hypoxic, or "dead", zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Focusing on two small agricultural watersheds in southwestern Minnesota, simulation results from the Agricultural Drainage And Pesticide Management (ADAPT) model were combined with a linear-optimization model to evaluate the environmental and economic impact of alternative land-use policies for reducing nitrogen losses. Many rural landowners within the Western United States do not have access to a secure water supply provided by a major dam or an irrigation district. Such water users must rely instead on groundwater pumping and/or seasonal water flows from tributaries. Some of these agricultural producers choose to store winter stream flows from tributaries within onsite reservoirs to secure their spring/summer water needs. However, regulatory agencies have increased restrictions on surface water storage and diversions to improve instream flows for endangered salmon, thus reducing water security for many landowners not located along the main stem. En el presente estudio se realizó el análisis de las Unidades de Riego con aprovechamiento superficial en la Cuenca Lerma Chapala, México, a través de la georrefenciación y caracterización de la infraestructura hidroagrícola, padrón de usuarios y catastro, integrándolos en un Modelo de Sistema de Información Geográfica (SIG). Esto permitió conocer en forma precisa la información relevante de dichas Unidades. Se caracterizaron 1,364 unidades de riego con un total de 56,266 usuarios que detentan 114,975.26 hectáreas. Payments for Environmental Services (PES) are being increasingly used as conservation instruments, particularly in Latin America. PES programs seek to capture part of the benefits derived from environmental services and channel them to natural resource managers who generate these services, thus increasing their incentive to conserve them. Le polder conchylicole de Bouin (Vendée) est le principal bassin français de production de naissains d’huîtres creuses issus d’écloseries. Depuis 2007, et malgré l’installation de dispositifs de traitement de l’eau, des anomalies dans les élevages voire des mortalités affectent la production des écloseries et nurseries du secteur, ainsi que celle de microalgues en grand volume d'une entreprise spécialisée. Abstract: The study was conducted in the lower basin of the Paraíba do Sul River (PSR), in which 57,000 km2 of the basin is located in the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. We proposed to identify the main sources of C and N fluxes in the PSR waters, to evaluate biogeochemical processes in the watershed, and to estimate C and N riverine loads to the Atlantic Ocean in the context of the sugarcane plantation expansion for ethanol production. CLIMATE CHANGE SENSITIVITY ASSESSMENT ON UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER BASIN STREAMFLOWS USING SWAT AgEcon

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to assess the impacts of potential future climate change on the hydrology of the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB). Calibration and validation of SWAT were performed on a monthly basis for 1968-87 and 1988-97, respectively; R2 and Nash-Sutcliffe simulation efficiency (E) values computed for the monthly comparisons were 0.74 and 0.65 for the calibration period and 0.81 and 0.75 for the validation period. The impacts of eight 20-year (1971-90) scenarios were then analyzed, relative to a scenario baseline. This study has estimated the supply augmentation of groundwater recharge due to creation of water harvesting structures and has assessed the cost-effectiveness of rainwater harvesting for groundwater recharge on watershed basis in one of the sub-watersheds of the Kolar district, Peninsular India — a typically hard-rock area. The study is based on the primary data for the year 2008-09 collected from a sample of 90 farmers having irrigation bore-wells in the selected watershed named Thotli. The study has indicated that the annual draft of irrigation water exceeds the annual recharge, causing a negative balance. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a dinâmica de uso e ocupação da terra em Áreas de Preservação Permanente – APPs - na Bacia Hidrográfica dos Rios Mogi Guaçu e Pardo, estado de São Paulo, de modo a subsidiar a formulação de políticas públicas. As APPs foram identificadas e mapeadas usando imagens do Landsat-7. O uso antrópico em áreas de preservação permanente tem sido freqüentemente relatado na literatura, para diferentes regiões do Brasil, com destaque para o uso agrícola. Distribuição locacional agropecuária e concentração fundiária na Bacia Hidrográfica dos Rios Mogi Guaçu e Pardo AgEcon

As relações entre a distribuição locacional dos usos da terra e a concentração fundiária, nos municípios da Bacia Hidrográfica dos Rios Mogi Guaçu e Pardo, são analisadas empregando o Quociente Locacional, a Curva de Especialização e o Índice de Gini. Os resultados mostram uma concentração fundiária excessivamente alta: metade dos municípios apresenta grau de concentração médio a forte (Índice de Gini entre 0,501 e 0,700) e metade grau forte a muito forte (Índice de Gini entre 0,701 e 0,900). The influences of clearing native vegetation (Caatinga) in contour strips at 25 cm vertical interval on evaporation losses in cleared strips, annual runoff efficiency and annuall soil loss on gently sloped micro-waterheds in the arid zones of Northeast Brazil are reported. The alternate native vegetation (Caatinga) strips function very effectively as windbreaks thus reducing evaporation losses substantially in the leeward cleared strips. The runoff measured at the micro-watershed with cleared strips was many-fold lower than the runoff obtained at a completely denuded watershed even when it was protected by narrow based channel terraces. In a hydrographic watershed, the erosionability (K factor) of the soil evaluation depends on the technical resources, developed applied sciences, and spatial technology available. For the determination of erosionability in the watershed of Pillahuinco Grande s Creek (Argentina) (38°S, 61°15'W), the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used by applying a geographic information system (GIS) for the cartographic evaluation. Evaluating Watershed Management Projects AgEcon

Watershed projects play an increasingly important role in managing soil and water resources throughout the world. Research is needed to ensure that new projects draw upon lessons from their predecessors’ experiences. However, the technical and social complexities of watershed projects make evaluation difficult. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods, which traditionally have been used separately, both have strengths and weaknesses. Combining them can make evaluation more effective, particularly when constraints to study design exist. This paper presents mixed-methods approaches for evaluating watershed projects. A recent evaluation in India provides illustrations.
