Clay Mineralogy of Brazilian Oxisols with Shrinkage Properties Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo

ABSTRACT Shrinkage capacity (caráter retrátil in Portuguese) is a new diagnostic characteristic recently introduced in the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS) to indicate shrink and swell properties observed in subtropical soils from highland plateaus in southern Brazil, specifically in Oxisols with brown colors. In soils located in road cuts exposed to drying for some weeks, strong shrinkage of soil volume is observed in these soils, resulting in the formation of pronounced vertical cracks and large and very large prismatic structures, which crumble in blocks when handled. Crystal morphology of binary and ternary mixtures of hydrogenated fats and soybean oil BABT

The objective of this study was to verify the influence of temperature on crystallization of binary and ternary mixtures of two hydrogenated fats and soybean oil, by polarized light microscopy at temperatures of 30° C, 35° C, and 40° C. The types of crystals observed were spherulites type A, and B and the polymorphic forms were ß , and ß -prime. The soybean oil does not contribute statistically to total area or maximum diameter of the crystals. At 35° C the positive relative coefficients to the interactions presented, in general, absolute values higher than the negative ones, pointing that the crystals were larger than what could be expected, if there was no interaction among the components. Disponibilidad de Pb, Cd y Ni por la adición de fósforo y azufre en suelos regados con agua residual, en el Valle del Mezquital, Hidalgo. Colegio de Postgraduados

Se evaluó el efecto de la adición de azufre y fósforo sobre la extractabilidad de Pb, Cd y Ni, y en la biodisponibilidad para maíz y alfalfa en el valle del Mezquital, Hidalgo. Se muestrearon los suelos de 13 sitios, se caracterizaron física y químicamente y se determinaron los elementos potencialmente tóxicos totales y extractables. De estos suelos se seleccionaron tres (Atitalaquia, Tlahuelilpan y Tepatepec) para establecer experimentos de equilibrio en el laboratorio. Los suelos se incubaron con dosis crecientes de azufre (0, 2, 4 y 6 t ha-1) y fósforo (0, 250, 500, 1000 y 2000 mg L-1), durante cinco y dos semanas, respectivamente. ABSTRACT Ferralsols ( Latossolos ) should contain few or no 2:1 clay minerals and have low potassium (K) contents, and consequently low levels of non-exchangeable K forms are expected. The aim of this study was to evaluate how the clay mineralogy of a Ferralsol affects the soil K dynamics in response to K fertilization during cropping and whether the clay mineralogy was altered due to successive crops and K fertilization. Fate of nickel ion in (II-III) hydroxysulphate green rust synthesized by precipitation and coprecipitation Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo

In order to investigate the efficiency of sulfate green rust (GR2) to remove Ni from solution, GR2 samples were synthesized under controlled laboratory conditions. Some GR2 samples were synthesized from Fe(II) and Fe(III) sulfate salts by precipitation. Other samples were prepared by coprecipitation, of Ni(II), Fe(II) and Fe(III) sulfate salts, i.e., in the presence of Ni. In another sample, Ni(II) sulfate salt was added to pre-formed GR2. After an initial X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization all samples were exposed to ambient air in order to understand the role of Ni in the transformation of the GR2 samples. Abstract Native cassava starch was gelatinized under different pretreatment conditions (preheating temperature, starch concentration and heating time) and spray-dried. A rotational compound central design was used to test the three independent variables: the preheating temperature, starch concentration, and heating time, and the behavior of the system was assessed by response surface methodology. The results showed a significant effect of both the preheating temperature and heating time on the cold viscosity. The combination of the preheating temperature and starch concentration affected the crystallinity, enthalpy change, solubility, and final viscosity. This study was conducted to examine the distribution and nature of Fe oxides in plinthic soils on the sediments of Barreiras Group (in the state of Piauí) and Itapecuru Formation (in the state of Maranhão) in Northeastern Brazil. A mineralogical quantification of an Acric Ferralsol from the Ponta Grossa region, state of Paraná, Brazil, was carried out using this Method with X-Ray Diffraction data to verify if this method was suitable for mineral quantification of a highly-weathered soil. Abstract In order to optimize the performance of chitosan-tea polyphenols composite films, effects of glycerol and Tween on the antioxidative activities and physical performance of chitosan composite films were evaluated. The results indicated that both flexibility and water vapour permeability of chitosan/tea polyphenols films were improved with the addition of glycerol, meanwhile the solubility and swelling degree decreased. Moreover, the release time of antioxidants from films was delayed with the addition of glycerol. The presence of Tween 20 had no significant effect on the tensile strength of films, but changed the DPPH radical scavenging activity depending on the blend ratio of glycerol and Tween. Production of grape juice powder obtained by freeze-drying after concentration by reverse osmosis BABT

This study aimed to evaluate the freeze-drying process for obtaining grape juice powder by reverse osmosis using 50% grape juice pre-concentrated (28.5 °Brix) and 50% hydrocolloids (37.5% maltodextrin and 12.5% arabic gum). The morphology of the glassy food showed the absence of crystalline structure, which was the amorphous wall that protected the contents of the powder. The samples were stored in clear and dark containers at room temperature, evaluated for their physical (X-ray diffraction) for 65 days and chemical (polyphenol content) stability for 120 days.
