Sustainable Energy Crop Production: A Case Study for Sugarcane and Cassava Production in Yunnan, China AgEcon
Zhang, Yu; Ni, Jianhong; Zhang, Sizhu.
The possibility of using biomass as a source of energy in reducing the greenhouse-effect imposed by carbon dioxide emission and relieving energy crisis is a matter of great interest, such as bioethanol production. Nevertheless, the cultivation of dedicated energy crops dose meet with some criticisms (conflict with food security and environmental degradation, for example). Nowadays sugarcane and cassava are regarded as the potential energy crops for bioethanol production. Endowed with natural resources and favorable weather condition, Yunnan province, China, is the major sugarcane and cassava production area in China. This paper presents

Surapol Chatuporn; Kritkamol Paothong; Nipon Teimhong; Alchalie Prasertsak.
Research investigated riceseed production by participation of farmer group and seed production recommended by the Department of Rice in comparison with rice seed production by Ban Ma -Tub Nam community enterprise in Bangpahun district of Auyutthaya province. The experiment conducted in dry season 2011 in collaboration with three farmer representatives. Research focused on rice seed quality and economic returns. For rice seed quality, seed production recommended by Rice Department was about thesame quality as seed production by participation of activefarmer groups and quality was higher...

Transition to organic production, Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada.
The purpose of this database is to provide organic farmers and agronomists access to resources containing information on successful ways to transition to organic production. The tool provides resources that introduce the user to organic production and will help with the planning process of the transition. The tool will direct the user to a database of scientific papers and practical resources on the subject matter. This tool is for specific use of organic farmers and crop advisors and includes resources from various locations.

The Influences of Vertical Integration and Scale of Production on Profitability of Pig Production AgEcon
Peplinski, Benedykt.
The material used in the study concerns 60 farms from the Wielkopolska region. They were divided depending on a degree of the farm integration with the slaughterhouses and on a scale of pigs production. The analyses include calculations of pigs prices, costs of pigs production and profits obtained by the farmers. Besides, the objects of the research are the main pigs production costs (feed and labour) as well as investments realised in the investigated farms.

A PROGRAMMING APPROACH TO ESTIMATE PRODUCTION FUNCTIONS USING BOUNDS ON THE TRUE PRODUCTION SET AgEcon
Lambert, David K..
Varian (1984) developed procedures to establish bounds on a true convex negative monotonic production set that p-rationalizes a set of data consistent with the weak axiom of profit maximization. These bounds can provide additional information for estimating parametric production functions. A mathematical programming procedure is developed to maximize various measures of goodness of fit of alternative parametric specifications relative to the true production set.

Representing the production structure of South African agriculture AgEcon
Poonyth, Daneswar; van Zyl, Johan.
This paper evaluates the production structure of the South African agricultural sector for the period 1970-1998, using a translog function. The results show that the production structure is best represented by production technology that is Hicks-neutral and homothetic. This information is useful in evaluating the results of previous research on the structure of South African agricultural production, particularly relatively recent research on elasticities of substitution. In addition, it also provides the basis for meaningful future analysis of aspects related to the production structure of...

BIOMASS FOR ENERGY USES – EXPLORING PRODUCTION POTENTIAL AND THE PRODUCTION COSTS FOR AUSTRIA AgEcon
Sinabell, Franz; Schmid, Erwin.
The expansion of renewable energy sources is an EU strategy to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels and to curb carbon dioxide emission. According to studies estimating technical potentials, significant land resources can be mobilised for the production of energy crops. We estimate the costs of a policy aiming at a stimulation of biomass and bioenergy production in Austria using a model that integrates the production of food, feed, agricultural and forest biomass as well as bioenergy products. The results show that an expansion of domestic biomass and bioenergy production is costly and it diminishes the

Decisions and tradable production quota when yield is uncertain AgEcon
Hennessy, David A.; Wei, Wei.
This article analyses optimal decisions under regulation by tradable agricultural production/marketing quotas when production is stochastic. For risk‐neutral and risk‐averse producers the fraction of planned production that is covered by quota is separable from input decisions when yield randomness is additive. The role of quota in protecting against the risk of production shortfall is investigated. A producer is shown to benefit from being allowed to treat as one all tranches of production quota under his control. Production decisions are invariant to...

Estimating a production function under production and price risks: An application to the suckler cow farms in the French charolais production area AgEcon
Mosnier, Claire; Reynaud, Arnaud; Thomas, Alban; Lherm, Michel; Agabriel, Jacques.
Suckler cow production in France relies mainly on a relatively extensive management of forage, implying that production risk may be enhanced by the sensitivity of those crops to weather variability. However risk exposure is supposed to be mitigated either through ex-ante decisions concerning pasture area management or through ex-post decisions concerning the purchase of feeds. This paper aims at assessing weather impacts on cattle production level decisions. Since farmers' decisions depend on farmers' behaviour regarding risks, which are namely production and price risks, we test constant absolute risk aversion, constant...

Management of oyster and mussel culture ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Drinkwaard, A.; Bohle, B.; Figueras, Antonio; Lavoie, R.; Maurer, Daniele.
The world aquaculture production (fresh and marine waters) achieved 11.1 million tonnes in 1986 (FAO, 1989). The molluscs represented 21 % of the total production. Marine aquaculture with 5.45 million tonnes reached 49% of the total production. The marine cultivated mollusc production was 2.25 million tonnes due mainly to oysters (36%), mussels (34%), clams (16%), and scallops (6%). As the aquaculture production is clearly identified in the statistics only since 1984, the evolution of the production of oysters and mussels for the last 15 years has been...

Genetics and welfare in organic poultry production. Genetics and welfare in organic poultry production A discussion on the suitability of available breeds and hybrids Organic Eprints
Brunberg, Emma; Grøva, Lise; Serikstad, Grete Lene.
Organic production of eggs, broilers and turkey is regulated by international and national regulations and differs from conventional production. Breeds and hybrids selected for conventional production are also used in organic production. Many traits that are important for animal welfare are affected both by environment and genetics. This report gives an overview of the research about how animals with different genetics can be more or less suitable for alternative production systems. Moreover, the answers from a questionnaire among Norwegian poultry producers are reported. Possibilities for...
