Chai Nat province still has some non-irrigated areas. Farmers in those areas can grow rice once a year with rainfed water. They usually grow good quality rice varieties for consumption in family and neighborhood. “Khao Jek” is local rice variety widely grow in Den Yai and Pri Nok-yung of Hankha district. The cooked eating qualities have soft texture and aroma. It’s the most favorite variety of local farmers. Chai Nat Rice Research Center collected this variety in 2004 and continuously improved by pureline selection, observation, intra-station, inter-station, farmers’ field yield trial, yield stability trial and promising line test. Results found that this variety is a non-glutinous photoperiod sensitive rice variety, having early maturity being harvested in the middle of November. It has a green culms and leaves, strong culm, lodging resistance and moderately tight panicle. The average grain yield is 528 kg/rai, 21.5% higher than those of KDML105. The average plant height is 168 cm. The paddy grain weight is 11.6 kg/thang, 36.2 g/1,000 grain weight and good milled quality. The brown rice has length x width x thickness as 8.02 x 2.42 x 1.96 mm, respectively. It has low chalkiness, low amylose content as 18.16 %, soft gel consistency, low gelatinization temperature and 1.93 elongation ratio. Cooked rice texture is soft with aroma. This variety is suitable for the rainfed area in the Lower North region which needs the early mature rice to consume. However, it should be reminded that this variety is susceptible to bacterial leaf blight, moderately susceptible to blast and susceptible to brown planthopper.
จังหวัดชัยนาท มีพื้นที่บางส่วนที่ระบบชลประทานเข้าไม่ถึง เกษตรกรผู้ปลูกข้าวในพื้นที่ดังกล่าวมักทำนาปีละครั้ง และอาศัยแหล่งน้ำจากปริมาณฝนที่ตกตามฤดูกาล โดยมักปลูกข้าวคุณภาพดีไว้เพื่อการบริโภค และนำบางส่วนจำหน่ายในพื้นที่ใกล้เคียง “ขาวเจ๊ก” คือข้าวพื้นเมืองสายพันธุ์ดีที่ปลูกกันอย่างแพร่หลายในตำบลเด่นใหญ่ และตำบลไพรนกยูง อำเภอหันคา เป็นข้าวที่มีคุณภาพการหุงต้มรับประทานอ่อนนุ่มกำลังดี และมีกลิ่นหอม เกษตรกรในท้องที่ให้ความนิยมเป็นอย่างมาก ศูนย์วิจัยข้าวชัยนาท ได้เก็บรวบรวมพันธุ์ข้าวดังกล่าว เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2547 และได้ดำเนินการอย่างต่อเนื่อง ตั้งแต่คัดเลือกสายพันธุ์บริสุทธิ์ ปลูกศึกษาพันธุ์ เปรียบเทียบผลผลิตภายในสถานี ระหว่างสถานี ในนาราษฎร์ ทดสอบเสถียรภาพของผลผลิต จนถึงทดสอบสายพันธุ์ดีเด่น พบว่า ข้าวพันธุ์นี้มีลักษณะเป็นข้าวเจ้าไวต่อช่วงแสง อายุเบา เก็บเกี่ยวประมาณกลางเดือนพฤศจิกายน ลำต้นและใบมีสีเขียว ต้นแข็ง ไม่ล้มง่าย รวงแน่นปานกลาง ให้ผลผลิต 528 กิโลกรัมต่อไร่ สูงกว่า ข้าวพันธุ์ขาวดอกมะลิ 105 ที่ให้ผลผลิต 414 กิโลกรัมต่อไร่ 21.5 เปอร์เซ็นต์ ข้าวพันธุ์นี้มีความสูงเฉลี่ย 168 เซนติเมตร น้ำหนักเมล็ดข้าวเปลือก 11.6 กรัมต่อถัง น้ำหนัก 1,000 เมล็ด 36.2 กรัม คุณภาพการสีดี ความยาวของเมล็ดข้าวกล้อง 8.02 มิลลิเมตร กว้าง 2.42 มิลลิเมตร หนา 1.96 มิลลิเมตร ท้องไข่น้อย จัดเป็นข้าวที่มีอมิโลสต่ำ คือ 18.16 เปอร์เซ็นต์ ความคงตัวของแป้งสุกอ่อน อุณหภูมิแป้งสุกต่ำ การยืดตัวของข้าวสุก 1.93 เท่า ข้าวหุงสุกแล้วอ่อนนุ่ม มีกลิ่นหอม เหมาะสำหรับนาอาศัยน้ำฝนในเขตภาคเหนือตอนล่าง ที่ต้องการปลูกข้าวอายุเบาไว้เพื่อการบริโภค ข้อควรระวัง คือ อ่อนแอต่อโรคขอบใบแห้ง ค่อนข้างอ่อนแอต่อโรคไหม้ และไม่ต้านทานต่อเพลี้ยกระโดดสีน้ำตาล
