The alteration of GABA levels has been involved in psychiatric disorders. Several studies have shown the pre-germinated brown rice (PGBR), that is a brown rice (BR) induced slight germination by soaking in the water, contains abundant of nutrients than BR especially GABA. However, there are few studies examining the effects of PGBR on brain functions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of PGBR using Oryza sativa var. glutinosa on the depressive behavior in a rat model of depression using forced swimming test. Animals were divided into five groups; stress control group was treated with distilled water, fluoxetine group was treated with fluoxetine antidepressant and PGBR I, II and III groups were treated with PGBR 1, 3 and 5 g/kg, respectively prior to stress exposure. A significant decrease in immobility behavior was found in all PGBR groups and fluoxetine groupcompared with stress control. Moreover, a significant increase in swimming behavior was observed in all PGBR I, II and III groupsas well as fluoxetine group compared with stress control group. The results suggest the antidepressant-like effect of PGBR.
