Resumo: |
Testing the addition of an alkali (NaOH) in an air cleaner (Munters A/S) connected to a finisher pig unit during the summer resulted in an average odour reduction of 47%. The measurement days were spread over two batches of pigs (summer and autumn). The average odour reduction for the entire test period was 41%. The measurements taken during the autumn did not show a statistically significant odour reduction. Furthermore, the results showed that it was possible to reduce the emission of hydrogen sulphide by 53%. As expected, the levels of ammonia and carbon dioxide were not reduced. When using 100% air cleaning, the consumption of the air cleaner for two batches of finishers (30 – 110 kg) amounted to 355 L water and 2.4 kg 27.7% NaOH solution, corresponding to 0.66 kg NaOH and 22.4 kWh per finisher. Based on the results, there is clearly a potential for using an alkali to reduce odour during the summer, while acid can be used to reduce ammonia emissions during the rest of the year.
