Struisvaren (Matteucia struthiopteris) is een algemene soort in tuinen. Buiten tuinen zijn groeiplaatsen altijd het gevolg geweest van menselijk handelen, bijv. het weggooien van tuinafval. In 1986 werd voor het eerst een natuurlijke vindplaats vastgesteld met diverse klonen in het Abbertbos (Oostelijk Flevoland). Vervolgens werd de soort in 2002 gevonden in het Waterloopbos (Noordoostpolder) op een bospad binnen een aanplant van Beuk, waar in de zomer de vochtigheid van de bodem gegarandeerd door ingelaten oppervlaktewater van buiten de polders. De soort werd in 2004 en 2005 gevonden binnen het Voorsterbos in bosgaten die waren gekapt in aanplanten van Beuk op keileem en waar de soort begeleid wordt door de Wijfjesvaren. Een vindplaats op het landgoed Twickel in Twente is zeer waarschijnlijk ook spontaan. Het is goed mogelijk dat in Nederland meer natuurlijke vindplaatsen voorkomen. Matteucia struthiopteris is found in many Dutch gardens. Outside this habitat, sites with this species have always been assigned as being artificial, caused by the dumping of garden rubbish or by planting. In 1986, the species was found for the first time on a natural site. Various patches were found in the Abbertbos (Oostelijk Flevoland, Province of Flevoland, former sea bottom). In 2002, it was found in the Waterloopbos (Noordoostpolder, Province of Flevoland) at a ride within a beech plantation where in the summer soil humidity is guaranteed by the inlet of water. In 2004 and 2005, it was found in the Voorsterbos in woodland gaps within beech stands on boulder clay, where it was growing in a mass vegetation of Athyrium filix-femina. A site at the estate ‘Twickel’ (Twente, Province of Overijssel) is also believed to be spontaneous. Probably there are more natural sites in the Netherlands.
