Factors to decrease risk
Factors to decrease risk for Theileria orientalis infection of cattle in pastureland in Eastern Hokkaido were investigated. Ixodes persulcatus,Ixodes ovatus and Haemaphysalis douglusii were collected from the vegetation of the pastureland, and DNA fragments of T. orientalis were detected from these ticks by using PCR. The results suggested that these tick species may be vectors for T. orientalis in this area. Many ticks have been recovered from wild sika deer, and it was thought that sika deer may be a risk factor of T. orientalis infection by bringing vectors into pastureland with them. Both fence to prevent wild animal invasion into a pastureland and reaping clear away around the pastureland were thought to be effective to decrease risk for T. orientalis infection of cattle.
