Resumo:  Argentine black drum distributes mainly in shallow waters associated to estuarine areas, particularly to Samborombon Bay where it may be detected throughout the year. Nevertheless, it can also be spotted more southwards (40°S) and at deeper waters. During summer, catches of the species in Samborombon Bay are practically negligible, probably due to movements towards shallow waters out of reach of the inshore commercial fleet. Landings increase in autumn and show peak values in winter, coinciding with the fishing season of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, whose geographical distribution within the bay overlaps that of black drum. As of 1995, landings of black drum showed increasing trends both in Argentina and Uruguay. These increments coincide with a higher fishing effort by the Samborombon Bay inshore fleet directed to whithemouth croaker and with the opening of black drum exports to Brazil. The Von Bertalanffy´s growth parameters for black drum in the study area were estimated at: Loo = 112.21; k = 0.185 and to = -0.099. The increase of the fishing effort, the slow growth rate and low relative fecundity of the species when compared to other sciaenids that inhabit the same area make it very vulnerable to fishing. This situation requires that management measures adopted in 1998 as regards forbidding the use of bottom trawlnets within the bay be not discontinued. Besides, it is recommended to perform systematic resource assessments and to study the identity of the stock on which the uruguayan and argentine coastal fleets operate.
