Actualmente la intensidad, duración y cobertura geográfica de las FAN producidas por la especie Alexandrium catenella (Whedon & Kofoid, Balech 1985), en el sur de Chile han aumentado desde 1972 hasta 2005, extendiéndose desde la XII Región hasta la X Región. De una estación fija ubicada en la XI Región, denominada “Nueva Hammerfest”, se analizó una serie de tiempo desde 1993 a 2005, con el fin de determinar si la presencia de A. catenella está relacionada con eventos tóxicos de esta especie observados en la zona austral de Chile. El análisis se basó en el recuento de células de muestras de red, estimación de Índices de Abundancia Relativa y relaciones de dependencia de la especie con registros de temperatura del agua. Se recolectaron 537 muestras de red, de las cuales 267 corresponden a los Cruceros Aysén (I-V) y 270 a la estación fija. Se determinó que la especie se encuentra en el plancton en cualquier época del año, con mayor presencia entre febrero y abril, observándose además una relación entre anomalías térmicas positivas en la superficie del mar con la presencia de A. catenella en todo el periodo de estudio. Aunque A. catenella se presentó en el plancton simultáneamente con grandes floraciones registradas en el sur de Chile, su distribución temporal no sigue un patrón determinado. A. catenella aumentó su rango de distribución geográfica desde la XII Región a la X Región del país. Dentro de las posibles causas de la expansión del rango de distribución de este dinoflagelado, no se descarta que la presencia de A. catenella pueda producirse por la expansión del núcleos tóxicos o dispersión por corrientes.
The intensity, duration and geographical covering of the HABs, produced by Alexandrium catenella (Whedon & Kofoid, Balech 1985) in the southern Chile, have increased from 1972 up to 2005. Its impact extends from the XII Region until the X Region. A time serie in a fixed station located in the XI Region, called "Nueva Hammerfest", the years 1993 to 2005 was analized to determine if the presence of A. catenella is related with toxic events of this species observed in this region. Also, to find the possible causes of the increase of the geographical covering of this dinoflagellate. The analysis was based on cells counting of net samples, estimated by Indexes of Relative Abundance (IRA) and relationships between the species and the water temperature records. A number of 537 net samples were gathered, of which 267 corresponded to Cruceros Aysén (I-V) and 270 to the fixed station. The results indicated that the species was present in the plankton at any time of the year, with a higher incidence between february and april. A relationship between positive thermal anomalies (increased temperature) in the surface and the presence of A. catenella in the whole period of study was detected. Although A. catenella was presented simultaneously in the plankton with large blooms registered in the south of Chile the temporal distribution was not follow a clear pattern. The geographical distribution of A. catenella increased from the XII Region to the X Region. In the light of these results it is possible that the presence of A. catenella can be associated to an expansion of the toxic nuclei or dispersion by currents.
