Resumo:  (1). During 1994 an estimated total of 4427.0 MT of fish was landed on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue by 425 fishing boats, 87.5% of which was landed on Mahe alone. The catch volume has decreased by 498.9 tonnes since 1991 The number of boats operating has decreased by 3 since 1993. (2). The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were, carangues (24.1%), job (13.6%), maquerau doux (13.2%), bourgeois (6.8%) and capitaine (6.4%). (3). Peak landings occurred in March (619.7 MT), the lowest catch occurred in February (172.0 MT). The average catch per month was 368.9 tonnes. (4). A marked seasonal variation in catches of demersal species was observed (snappers, job, vielle) with low catches being recorded during the period of SE trade winds (June-September). Peak catches of carangue occurred during May. The catch of pelagic species exhibited the same seasonal variation as observed with the demersal species with the exception of bonite for which the largest catches were obtained during the SE trade wind period. Catches of cordonier dropped from May to August. The catch of other trap fish, however, dropped from September to December. These observations of seasonal variability are believed to relate more to climatic conditions than to the catchability of the fish themselves. (5). In total the small boat fishery accounted for 44.7% of fish landings during 1994. The percentage catch by boat type for the small boat fishery is as follows; fishermen on foot, 0.7%; pirogues, 4.0%; outboards, 39.2% and whalers with fixed traps, 0.3%. Fishermen on foot landed mostly octopus (86.7%): pirogues landed maquereaux doux (50.4%) and cordonier (8.8%): outboards landed maqueraux doux (28.6%) and cordonnier (10.8%) and whalers with traps, other I rap fish (67.2) and cordonnier (10.8%). Approximately half of the landings by the small boat fleet were pelagic species. (6). The whaler handline fishery accounted for 47.5% of total landings. An average of 91 whalers operated each month during 1994 with only a change of 1 vessel since 1993. Carangues accounted for the largest part of the catch (34.6%). Other important species were; job gris (17.0%), bourgeois (11.3%) and becune (6.4%). (7). An average of 9 schooners operated each month during 1994 and accounted for 6.5% of total landings. Batrican was the single most important species caught (21.1%) followed by bourgeois (13.6%), job gris (10.2%), vieille maconde (7.3%) and carangues (6.8%). The spanner crab Ranina ranina accounted for 2.8% of schooner landings. (8). Fish purchases from the artisanal fishery by the Seychelles Marketing board (SMB) were equivalent to 14.0% of total landings (621.9 MT). 80.3% was purchased through the Victoria SMB centre on Mahe and 19.7% through the two centres on Praslin and La Digue. Major species purchased were: job (32.5%), bourgeois (17.1%), capitaine (10.1%) and carangue (9.1%). (9). SMB also purchased 246.9 MT of frozen fish (gutted and ungutted) from foreign longline vessels during 1994. Species purchased were all pelagic of which bonite was the most common (48.7%) followed by dorade (18.l %), yellowfin (11.2%), sailfish (6.1%) and swordfish (3.9%). (10). Fish exports by the SMB fish Division (excluding tuna transhipped through the Seychelles or through the cannery) amounted to 362.1 MT. 55% being fresh and 45% frozen valued at SR 7.2 million (CIF). Major destinations for the fish were Reunion (51.5%), Mauritius (28.9%) and West Germany (5.0%). Job (44.1%), bourgeois (17.7%) and vieille maconde (9.0%) formed the most important fresh fish exports, whilst job (40.5%), pelagies (34.9%) and capitaine (14.3%) were the most important frozen species. Data for the private sector export industry were not available at the time of writing. (11). A comparison of data collected between 1989 and 1994 follows. Data collected prior to 1989 are reported in the Artisanal Fisheries Statistics for 1990.
