Resumo:  Hoki, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important resource in the Argentinean multispecific southern demersal fishery. The species is distributed South of 46°S between the 50 and 200 meter isobaths. Thesouthern demersal fishery was almost nil prior to 1987, becoming more relevant toward the end of the 1980's. International fleets operating through several fishery agreement were those of the ex-Soviet Union,Bulgaria and Japan. Research on the abundance of hoki resources were initiated in the early 1970's; however, fishery research have been noticeably enhanced since 1992. In this study existing information on the Argentinean hoki fishery is integrated and an assessment of the status of exploitation of the species is carried out.As a result of the analyses, a rational fishery management framework is developed for the hoki resources. By way of the analyses this study introduces for the first time in the fisheries of Argentina a stock assessment procedure that considers projections of allowable biological catches based on fishing mortality reference points F0, 1 from which a Total Allowable Catch TAC)may be selected for the fishery. The 1995 range of allowable biological catches was estimated between 101.5 and 131.5 thousand metric tons, with a greater incidence between 103.5 and 112.5 thousand tons.
