From March 2001 until March 2002, harmful benthic dinoflagellates were grouped on the sediment of an estuary where Jaimanitas River ends (NW of Havana City). The dinoflagellates were monitored along six fixed points on three types of sediments: muddy, mud-sandy, sand-muddy and sandy. Prorocentrum was the dominant among four species and Prorocentrum lima was the most abundant according spatial and temporal distribution. Spatial distribution in cellular density oscillated between 0.74 X 103 cel/cm3 and 2.36 X 103 cel/cm3 and temporally between 0.12 x 103 cel/cm3 and 2.09 x 103 cel/cm3. The minimum records were in January and February while the maximum was in August. By the Multi-dimensional Scaled Method (MDS), three seasonal groups were differenced according cellular concentration: one conformed by three subsamples from Station I, the other group by subsamples from Station VI, and the last one by the remaining stations.
