En el presente artículo se va a referir principalmente a los eventos de Marea Roja (MR) registrados entre 1989-1999 (Fig. 1y2).
Some Red Tides were reported during the last decade (1989-1999) in Ecuadorian waters, these observed during coastal monitorings and cruises oceanographic, and they migth have a relationship to coastal oceanographic aspects. The Red Tides are of world occurrence, in Ecuador they appeared with high frequency in the Gulf of Guayaquil (Canal de Jambelí, Estero Salado, Puná Island and Río Guayas), but they have been also evidenced to the south of the Peninsula Santa Elena, Manglaralto, Manta, Cojimíes and in the Galapagos Islands. Their highest occurrence was in February and March, another one in April, June, September and November. During El Niño event, the marine fertility decreases when warm water masses arrive with a low dominance of dinoflagellates. This organisms can caused red tide especially in the Gulf of Guayaquil. Red tide events were caused specially by the dinoflagellates and ciliates their species have been Cochlodinium catenatum, Cochlodinium sp., Gymnodinium splendens, Gonyaulax monilata, Gonyaulax spp., Gymnodinium spp., Gyrodinium striatum, Noctiluca scentillans, Prorocentrum sp., Prorocentrum maximun, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Ceratium gibberum, Ceratium deflexum, Mesodinium rubrum, giving discoloraciones yellowish and reddish coffee; but there has also been diatomeas with yellow staions - greenish as Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus sp., Chaetoceros affinis, C. curvisetus; and due to whitish to masses of jellyfishs.
