The demand for fish in Nigeria from 1985 to the year 2000 is presented. Domestic production relative to demand is stressed. Estimated potential yields of resources from various bodies of water and indication of their present levels of exploration are indicated. The potential of aquaculture as the most reliable means of increasing production is emphasized while the limit of capture fishery for the same purpose is stressed. Government efforts to develop the fisheries and increase fish production are discussed together with possible causes responsible for failure of these efforts to achieve desired results. Efforts of enormous post harvest wastage of fish on the gap between fish production and fish that eventually reach consumers are examined. The paper finally summarises tradition methods of fish processing in Nigerian and highlights the potentials available for improving and diversifying utilisation of fishery resources to maximize their economic benefits.
