Resumo:  This report reviews the spiny lobster fishery on the Mahe Plateau for the 2002/2003 fishing season. In order to improve and maintain proper management of this resources around the Mahe Plateau, the monitoring programme, set up in 1992, was continued this season to collect more information on the spiny lobster stock. Following recommendations made after the 2001/2002 lobster fishing season, a total of 25 licenses were issued in 2002/2003 namely fourteen on Mahe, six on Praslin and five on La Digue. Similar to previous seasons, the most frequently used lobster fishing techniques was snorkelling which involved 21 fishing units, whilst only two units used the trap method and two used both snorkelling and trap. For this three-month fishing season, a total of 5.4 tonnes of spiny lobsters were estimated to have been landed compared to 5.5 tonnes in 2001-2002 fishing season. Most landings were on Mahe, which accounted for 59.3% of the total catch (3.18 tonnes) followed by La Digue with 13.9% (0.745 tonnes) and Praslin with 13.6% (0.733 tonnes). Other islands accounted for 13.7% of the total catch. The month of November accounted for 1.64 tonnes, while 2.29 tonnes were landed in December and 1.42 tonnes in January. A total of 459 trips were undertaken equivalent to 899 man-trips for the season with 152 trips in November, 189 trips in December and 118 trips in January. The snorkelling and trap capture methods represented 94-31% and 5.68% of the total catch respectively. The catch rates represented by catch per unit effort (CPUE) throughout the season were as follows:- 11.33kg/trip (November), 12.34 kg/trip (December), 12.60 kg/trip (January) The main species targeted were: Homard Grosse Tete (Panulirus penicillatus), Homard Rouge (Panulirus longipes), Homard Vert (Panulirus versicolor). The catch composition by fishing method was as follows: a) Snorkeling: Homard Grosse Tete: 69.43%, Homard Rouge: 28.25%, Homard Vert: 1.54% b) Trap: Homard Grosse Tete: 2.86%, Homard Rouge: 96.23%.
