Resumo:  A mothership/dory fishing operation 'Pecheur Breton' caught 559.8 tonnes of fish in and around the exclusive economic zone of the Seychelles between October 1992 and May 1993. The vessel fished using 12 inboard powered diesel catcher boats which were equipped with echo-sounders and electric fishing reels, two men fished from each boat. Lutjanids were the most common species group in the catch representing (45%) of the total followed by Lethrinids (32%), Serranids (15%) and other species (8%) the majority of which were pelagics. Detailed catch/effort logs were kept for each dory on a daily basis by an experienced Seychelles Fishing Authority technician. The data was analyzed using a FOXBASE programme and the results presented in this report. During three trips the mother ship fished at locations on the edge of the Mahe Plateau and associated banks, the Amirantes group, Providence/Farquhar group, Cosmoledo group and Saya de Malha Bank to the southeast of the granitic islands of the Seychelles. Daily catch rates declined at some locations which could be directly attributed to the cumulative removal of fish by the catcher boats. Daily catch and effort data for Pristipomoides filamentosus on the northwestern submarine promontory of Saya de Malha Bank was identified as being suitable for use in a depletion model. A comparison between the catches and available estimates of maximum sustainable yield by location showed that catches from the shallow water strata (0-75m.) at the Providence/Farquhar group exceeded the MSY by 75.2 tonnes and that the demersal resources at this sector had not fully recovered from heavy over fishing on previous trips. The catches of Pristipomoides filamentosus on the northwestern promontory of Saya de Malha Bank exceeded the maximum sustainable yield by 41.4 tonnes. The mother ship/line fishing operation 'Pecheur Breton' was highly efficient at exploiting off-shore demersal fisheries resources that were otherwise inaccessible to the majority of vessels in the local fleet, however, the operation overfished some grounds in a very short period of time damaging the reproductive capacity of the stocks. Recommendations are made for a resource survey of Saya de Malha Bank to determine the potential for the development of a demersal line fishery.
