The presence of mercury in several compartments of the aquatic ecosystems represents a problem of great concern in the Amazonian basin. The goal of this work is to correlate the amount mercury found in bottom sediment with other trace elements as well as its spatial distribution in the upper Madeira River. Field samples were acquired on February of 2004. Total mercury quantitative determination was carried out through atomic absorption spectrophotometer analysis with cold vapor generation in flow injection system. Trace elements data analysis was implemented using multiple regression and spatial distribution analysis was developed using indicative kriging geostatistic technique. Multiple regression analysis showed that Hg has a strong dependence with Co, Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, Mn and Fe, but only Co and Mn presented a significant cause effect relationship. This relationship is corroborated by the high spatial dependence observed through geostatistic analysis of mercury.
