The general objective of the thesis was to infer the process of transformation of the landscape in the municipal district of São José dos Campos, more specifically the space modifications of the use and of the natural vegetable covering of the earth and your relationships with the factors physical, biological and socioeconomic. The methodological procedures based on the theoretical and methodological concepts of the Landscape Ecology and your application in the evaluation of the space process of transformation of the landscape, being used of the data and of the techniques of Remote Sensing, Geoprocessing and of field works. The methodological development involved the characterization of the structure of the landscape, the evaluation of the transformation and the periodization and modeling of the transformation process. The main methodological stages were: a) determine physical compartments of the landscape, b) Configuration of the original natural vegetable covering, c) Compartment of the landscape in landscape units, d) Spatial representation of the transformation (Centuries XVI to XX - 1930), and) Mapping of the transformation (Century. XX - 1950 to 2000), f) integrated Analysis of the transformations, g) Periodization of the transformation of the landscape, g) Generation of the conceptual model of transformation. The characterization of the structure of the landscape (referring to the stages "a", “b" and "c") it allowed to evaluate the relationships of the transformation of the landscape with the structure and your conditional factors. The spatialization of the transformation (regarding stage "d"), an attempt of space approach of the history of the landscape, made possible a larger understanding of the space processes and your relative contribution in the history of the landscape. The quantification of the process, although just based on estimates, made possible to give a notion of the importance and of the extension of the transformations. The mapping of the transformation of the landscape (stage "e"), even if for a restricted period of the history of the landscape (50 years) it demonstrates the whole potential of the evaluation of the space processes of transformation happened, allowing a necessary quantification of the process and attribution of the relationships with the structure of the landscape. The divide into periods stage (stage "f") it allowed to relate the alterations of the landscape to the principal moments historical, political, social and economical happened in the municipal district of São José dos Campos. The presented conceptual model in a schematic way was revealed a powerful synthesis instrument, aiding in the understanding of the processes involved in the transformation of the landscape. The main contributions of this thesis were: to Consider the Landscape with historical document; to Investigate the historical of the landscape, revealing your space transformations; to Accomplish a periodization of the landscape considering your dynamics; to use the data and techniques assaults of Remote Sensing and Geoprocessing in the historical investigation; to Structure a form for a space approach of the history of the landscape, made the transformations temporal and methodological compatible, gathering them in a chronological sequence, providing coherence, allowing your quantification and espacialization and relating with the transformation factors; to use the space models and you consider as research instruments and historical synthesis; to Emphasize the importance of the history of the landscape as auxiliary instrument to the landscape planning.
