Resumo: |
The Dominican government is currently undertaking many programs in the food and fiber sector which are expected to improve agricultural sector performance which in turn is important for the development of the whole economy. Thus, it is important to identify the general strengths and weaknesses of the system "as is" in order to carefully select subsequent specific studies about the Dominican food and fiber system. Although this study is general, it is nonetheless valuable since it contributes to a basic and introductory understanding of the Dominican case. The main objective of this study is to describe the general role that the government might play in the Dominican food and fiber sector in order to obtain more efficiency and equity among the systems' participants. Other objectives are to recommend specific policies for improving the performance of the food and fiber system and to increase economic growth through higher public investment in agriculture.
