A. _______________ COMBINING ABILITY AND GENOTYPE X ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION EFFECTS IN MAIZE FOR PROVITAMIN A AND YIELD. ABSTRACT: In order to assess the evaluation of the combining ability and the genotype vs. environment effects in maize, in terms of provitamin A and yield, this research was developed, from crossing 38 lines (22 from the hetorotic group A and 16 from the heterotic group B) with three testers each. Four trials were evaluated using the formed hybrids (three corresponding to the heterotic group A and one of them corresponding to the heterotic group B) under a randomized incomplete block design. Each trial was planted in four environments in two locations (Tlaltizapán, Morelos– normal conditions and conservation agriculture; and Agua Fría, Puebla- normal conditions and water stress). The hybrids were scored for yield, days of flowering and plant height; likewise the carotenoid content of the grain was determined. The most relevant conclusions are: 1) Provitamin A is a high heritable trait, showing an average of heritability of 56. 2) The genotype x environment interaction was not statistically significant. 3) There were significant effects of the environment. 4) No significant correlations were observed between the yield and provitamin A.
