Resumo:  Stable C. sativus-hystrix introgression lines with fourteen chromosomes, derived from the interspecific hybridization between a wild relative of cultivated cucumber C. hystrix (2n=2x=24, HH) and a Chinese cucumber 'Beijingjietou' (C. sativus L., 2n=2x=14, CC) were characterized using morphological, cytological, and SSR analysis. In morphology, those introgression lines were characterized to have small-sized leaf, short fruit, and multi-branching habit which were closer to the wild parent (C. hystrix), and to have a fertility as high as that of cultivated cucumber. Cytological observation showed that sister chromatids in at least one pair of somatic chromosomes were delayed obviously in separation at late metaphase. At diakinesis, 0.2 tetravalents, 0.05 hexavalents and 0.05 octovalents per pollen mother cell (PMC) were detected, which was not observed in cultivated cucumber. Twenty three SSR primers were used to detect the introgression from C. hystrix to C. sativus, and only one locus were revealed and assigned to introgressive fragments from C. hystrix genome in C. sativus. The introgression lines exhibited resistance to downy mildew in the field inoculation, which is useful to the development of cucumber with downy mildew resistance.
