Resumo:  Lupinus polyphyllus remains vegetative during the first year, stores cold during winter and is induced to blossoming in the second year. Inflorescences are attractive and varied coloured terminal clusters. In Buenos Aires the historical average winter temperature is 11.5 ºC and the number of hours of cold are not enough for L. polyphyllus to flower so there is no commercial offer in pots. The line of work chosen to produce genetic variability in L. polyphyllus, was induced mutagenesis with the purpose of rescuing genetic variants that meet the required cold naturally in Buenos Aires and capable of flowering and producing viable seeds. Seeds harvested in Bariloche were sown on september 4, 2003. 600 seedlings received gamma radiation at a rate of 50 Gy and were grown in pots in a greenhouse at the Facultad de Agronomia. 18 plants were transplanted to the soil in the winter of 2004 and after flowering, 30 seeds were harvested (BA) which were sown in pots on may 20, 2005 together with 93 seeds from Bariloche (WILD). Once, the number of leaves was counted in the 6 surviving plants from BA and the WILD 93, finding significant statistical differences in favour of the former. The objective persued was attained since individual plants that were capable of blossoming and bearing fruit naturally in Buenos Aires were obtained. The descendence of these individuals would be the appropiate germoplasm to initiate a genetic improvement plan that could originate a plant variety of L. polyphyllus apt for Buenos Aires.
