Actiniaria from Ria de Arosa, Galicia, northwestern Spain, in the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis, Leiden Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Ates, R.M.L..
Twentysix species of sea anemones (Actiniaria) collected in Galicia, northwestern Spain are present in the collection of the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis. They are listed and discussed. The cnidom of seventeen species is surveyed. Diadumene cincta is not a recent immigrant in western Europe. Sagartia luciae is (re)assigned to the genus Diadumene. The presence of Sagartia troglodytes in the Mediterranean is doubtful at best.

Kranswieren tussen wad en klif, Friesland Naturalis
Claassen, T.H.L..
Six species of Charophyta were recorded in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, in the years 1980-1982, during an ecological water quality research program. These species are Chara aspera, C. delicatula, ( C. globularis, C. vulgaris, Nilellaflexilis and N. mucronala. The distribution is presented in maps. They are investigated together with the other higher (water)plants. The occurrence of Charophyta was restricted to two water types, viz. ditches and peatdiggings. The assumed high biological monitoring value was not confirmed by the physico-chemical water quality data. Especially for the shallow Dutch waters further research is necessary on the potentially usefulness of (these) Charophyta as biological indicators of water quality.

Les sources du Moyen Atlas et de Rif (Maroc): Faunistique (description de deux espèces nouvelles de Trichoptères), écologie, intérêt biogéographique Naturalis
Giudicelli, Jean; Dakki, Mohamed.
Seven springs in the Middle Atlas and five in the Rif have been studied. These show a great diversity of crenal habitats: water temperature ranges from 8.7° to 21°C, and the flow from 1 l/s to 1,800 l/s. Based on hydrologic and thermic characteristics, a spring typology is provided. The invertebrate community consists of 60 species, among which 4, found in the Rif, are new to science: Protonemura sp. (Plecoptera), Obuchovia sp. (Diptera, Simuliidae), Rhyacophila fonticola n. sp., and Philopotamus ketama n. sp. (Trichoptera). The new Trichoptera are both described. Two rare endemic species (the planarian Acromyadenium maroccanum and the coleopteran Elmis atlantis) have been found in a cold-water spring in the Middle Atlas; two black-fly species ( Cnetha...

The development of the fruit-body of Marasmius cornelii (Agaricales) and of a new species of Marasmius sect. Gloiocephala Naturalis
Corner, E.J.H..
The gymnocarpic development of the very small and gill-less fruit-body of Marasmius cornelii is directed by intrinsic factors until the lengthening stem becomes geotropic. The primordium is covered from a very early stage by a hymenioderm of clavate encrusted cells with a few lanceolate pileocystidia; the smooth clavate cells are a later development from the marginal growth of the pileus. The intercalary formation of the stem separates the pileus from the basal disc which acts as a turgid cushion supporting the stem round its insititious base. The hymenium is microscopically collariate. The Malayan M. poculiformis spec. nov. develops in the same way but lacks the basal disc to the stem which lengthens by secondary septation of its hyphae.

Host specificity and phylogenetic relationships among Atlantic Ovulidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) Naturalis
Reijnen, B.T.; Hoeksema, B.W.; Gittenberger, E..
Ovulid gastropods and their octocoral hosts were collected along the leeward coast of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. New molecular data of Caribbean and a single Atlantic species were combined with comparable data of Indo-Pacific Ovulidae and a single East-Pacific species from GenBank. Based on two DNA markers, viz. CO-I and 16S, the phylogenetic relationships among all ovulid species of which these data are available are reconstructed. The provisional results suggest a dichotomy between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific taxa. Fully grown Simnialena uniplicata closely resembles juvenile Cyphoma gibbosum conchologically. Cymbovula acicularis and C. bahamaensis might be synonyms. The assignments of Caribbean host species for Cyphoma gibbosum, C....

Geological Investigations on Boulder-Clay of E. Groningen Naturalis
Gijzel, P. van; Overweel, C.J.; Veenstra, H.J..
In this article the results of a study on boulder-clay in the neighbourhood of Winschoten (N.E. Netherlands) are communicated (Chapter I). The underlying sediments of the boulder-clay in this area consist of fine preglacial sands and black clay. In the nuclei of the many drumlins a strongly ice-pushed boulder-clay may be encountered (Chapter II). Palynological analysis showed the pollen content of the boulder-clay to be very small. In a few samples more pollen was found (Plates I and II), but in these cases there appeared to be an admixture of black clay, obviously picked up by the land-ice. This black clay (the so-called potklei or pottery clay) is very humic and resembles the Lauenburg clay from Germany, but is younger. Using pollen analysis only one...

Martens, Paul M.; Curini-Galletti, Marco C..
The family Archimonocelididae Meixner, 1938 has been revised. The family contains two subfamilies, each comprising two genera: the Archimonocelidinae with Archimonocelis Meixner, 1938 and Meidiama Marcus, 1946, and the Calviriinae subfam. nov. with Asilomaria Karling, 1966 and Calviria gen. nov. with 20, 2, 1, and 3 species, respectively, 13 of which are new to science. The type species of the family is redescribed. Material of all the Archimonocelididae genera has been studied and supplementary remarks are made on some known species. The karyotype of 14 species is described. Archimonocelis has a cosmopolitan distribution while Meidiama is restricted to the South American coast, Calviria to the Mediterranean, and Asilomaria to the Pacific North American...

On Talegallus pyrrhopigius Naturalis
Schlegel, H..
Two species of Talegallus are generally known to naturalists. One, Talegallus Lathamii inhabiting Australia, is remarkable for its size equalling almost that of the Turkey, for its wattled throat and tolerably long roofshaped tail. The other, Talegallus Cuvieri, is found in New-Guinea and most of its dependencies, viz: the isles of Mysole, Salawattie, Aru and Iobie. This latter species, however, has been subdivided, by certain modern naturalists, into several other species. All those birds presenting the same size, the same proportions and the same coloring of plumage, other characters have been sought for in order to corroborate those species. One of these characters is said to be in the coloring of the legs and feet, reddish in Talegallus jobiensis,...

Brachiopod and fusulinid assemblages of Kasimovian (Pennsylvanian) age from the Ándara Massif (Picos de Europa, northern Spain) Naturalis
Martínez Chacón, M.L.; Merino-Tomé, O.A.; Villa, E..
The analysis of early Kasimovian (Pennsylvanian) brachiopod assemblages from two fossiliferous localities of the Las Llacerias Formation (Ándara Massif, Picos de Europa, northern Spain) improve our knowledge of this fossil group in the Cantabrian Zone. At the Morra de Lechugales Peak (locality 1), marlstones and bioclastic limestones, accumulated in a low energy, subtidal, aphotic setting, characterize a soft muddy sea-floor affected by periodic intense bottom currents and provide a rich assemblage of brachiopods together with other macrofossils. Brachiopod specimens are characterized by their small size (<10 mm) and belong to 38 different taxa. The fossiliferous dark marly limestones at the Castillo del Grajal (locality 2) record a very shallow water,...

First insights into the evolutionary history of the Davallia repens complex Naturalis
Chen, C.-W.; Ngan, L.T.; Hidayat, A.; Evangelista, L.; Nooteboom, H.P.; Chiou, W.-L..
Davallia repens and its close relatives have been identified as a species complex in this study because of the existence of continuously morphological variation. To decipher its evolutionary history, integrated methodologies were applied in this study including morphology, cytology, reproductive biology and molecular phylogeny. Analysis of morphological characters reveals several important discriminating characteristics, such as the shape of stipe scales, frond and indusium. Both diploid and polyploid forms are present in the complex and reproduce sexually and by apogamy, respectively. The incongruence between cpDNA and nDNA phylogeny indicates a hybrid origin for most polyploid individuals. Based on the present results, we hypothesize that there were at...

Comments on systematics and zoogeography of bats in the Lesser Antilles Naturalis
Jones, J. Knox; Phillips, Carleton J..
The Lesser Antilles, extending some 500 miles from Anguilla on the north to Grenada on the south, form an archipelago connecting the Greater Antilles with Trinidad and the South American mainland.¹) Bats comprise the major segment of the extant mammalian fauna of the Lesser Antillean islands and the distribution and variation of chiropterans in this area long has interested systematists and zoogeographers. A revival of this interest in the past decade has resulted in a number of published contributions — KOOPMAN (1958, 1959, 1968), HUSSON (1960), DE LA TORRE (1966), DE LA TORRE & SCHWARTZ (1966), JONES & SCHWARTZ (1967), SCHWARTZ & JONES (1967). Still, much remains to be learned. Nineteen species of bats are on record from the Lesser Antilles....

Miscellaneous botanical notes XX Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
In March 1962 Mr. A. Hoogerwerf collected swamp and savannah plants in the extreme South of New Guinea, about 25 km WNW. of Merauke, near a place Kurik, c. 10 km north of the mouth of the Kali Kumbe. There the Government was planning to start a mechanical rice plant with polders, as has been done in Suriname. As the experimental plot was menaced by too many birds, Mr. Hoogerwerf, an ornithologist, was making an investigation of the avifauna and collected plants in and around the marshes in order to verify later on which plants the birds fed. Among his collection there were many interesting plant species, especially sedges; Fimbristylis blepharolepis Kern was even a new species. Cyperus cf. angustatus R.Br., Rhynchospora heterochaeta Blake, and Fimbristylis...
