Haemocytic neoplasia in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in the Slovene Adriatic Sea ArchiMer

The health status of cultured and wild Mediterranean mussels in the Slovene Sea has so far been unexplored. Initially, 1280 adult Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), 960 from a shellfish farm and 320 from natural beds, were collected over a one-year period. Water temperature, oxygenation and salinity were measured at each sampling. Mussels were measured and weighted to calculate the condition index and microscopically examined for the presence of haemocytic neoplasia. Haemocytic neoplasia was detected in 14 mussels (1.1%) with a higher prevalence in cultured mussels. Neoplastic cells singularly infiltrated the connective tissue, in small foci or diffusely. Molecular responses of Ostrea edulis haemocytes to an in vitro infection with Bonamia ostreae ArchiMer

Bonamiosis due to the parasite Bonamia ostreae is a disease affecting the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. B. ostreae is a protozoan, affiliated to the order of haplosporidia and to the cercozoan phylum. This parasite is mainly intracellular, infecting haemocytes, cells notably involved in oyster defence mechanisms. Suppression subtractive hybridisation (SSH) was carried out in order to identify oyster genes differentially expressed during an infection of haemocytes with B. ostreae. One Perkinsus species may hide another: characterization of Perkinsus species present in clam production areas of France ArchiMer

Although clam populations in France are known to be infected with protozoans of the genus Perkinsus, no molecular characterization was previously performed on these parasites. Considering that several members of this genus have been associated with mortalities of molluscs worldwide, a study was undertaken in order to characterize these parasites in France. For that purpose, clams, Ruditapes philippinarum and R. decussatus, collected from different production areas and found to be infected with Perkinsus sp. in thioglycolate culture medium, were selected for PCR-RFLP tests and sequencing. In 1972, Farley reported the presence of herpes-type viral particles in adult American oysters (Crassostrea virginica) for the first time. Since then, this pathogen has been detected in various marine bivalve species, usually associated with massive mortality events. To date, herpes-type viruses have been detected in the following species: C gigas, Ostrea edulis, O. angasi, Tiostrea chilensis, Ruditapes decussatus, R. philippinarum and most recently, Pecten maximus.

The yellow clam Amarilladesma mactroides (Deshayes, 1854) is considered a vulnerable species since the mid-1990s. Populations have experienced mass mortalities throughout their entire range of distribution (23–41°S) along exposed sandy beaches of Atlantic South America. Detrimental anthropogenic impacts have further contributed to failure of populations to make a recovery. Detection of oyster herpesvirus DNA and proteins in asymptomatic Crassostrea gigas adults ArchiMer

Since 1972, several herpes-like virus infections have been reported among different bivalve species around the world. Most of these reports involved larvae or juveniles presenting high mortalities. Two case reports of herpes-like viruses concerned adult oysters, Crassostrea virginica in USA and Ostrea angasi in Australia. Molecular techniques including PCR and in situ hybridization (ISH) have been recently developed to detect the oyster herpesvirus genome. Le Réseau REPAMO : un outil de surveillance de la santé des mollusques marins élevés et sauvages ArchiMer

The Ifremer Repamo network (REseau de PAthologie des MOllusques) is the national surveillance network in charge of monitoring marine mollusc health on French coastlines. It is commissioned to enforce the official regulations and to provide a public service, under the supervision of the competent authority (DGAL Veterinary Directorate) in the Ministry.of Agriculture and Fisheries. Its goals are to prevent the introduction and the dissemination of infectious agents, in particular pathogens involved in reportable diseases, and to monitor the changes in the pathogens already present on the French coasts.

Can survival of European flat oysters following experimental infection with Bonamia ostreae be predicted using QTLs? ArchiMer

The present study identifies quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in response to an experimental infection with the parasite responsible for bonamiosis, Bonamia ostreae, in two segregating families of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. We first constructed a genetic-linkage map for each studied family and improved the existing genetic-linkage map for the European flat oyster with a set of SNP markers. This latter map now combines the best accuracy and the best estimate of the genome coverage available for an oyster species. Prevalence of the protozoan Perkinsus spp. in the gills of the pleasure oyster Crassostrea corteziensis from two estuaries in Nayarit, Mexico, was measured. The protozoan was identified by PCR amplification of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA of Perkinsus spp. The pathogen was found in 92% of oysters from Boca de Camichín and 77% of oysters from Pozo Chino. ITS sequences characterized from C. corteziensis showed 96–100% similarity to Perkinsus marinus. PANDA consists of five scientific work packages: risk analysis, epidemiology, diagnosis, environmentally safe strategies for disease control, training in research and diagnostics. Although a wide range of viruses have been reported in marine molluscs, most of these reports rely on ultrastructural examination and few of these viruses have been fully characterized. The lack of marine mollusc cell lines restricts virus isolation capacities and subsequent characterization works.
