Survival of Ascaris suum and Ascaridia galli eggs in liquidmanure at different ammonia concentrations andtemperatures Organic Eprints
Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Mejer, Helena; Dalsgaard, Anders; Kyyvsgaard, Niels Christian; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
tEggs of Ascaris suum from pigs are highly resistant and commonly used as a conservativeindicator of pathogen inactivation during slurry storage. Eggs of Ascaridia galli, the poultryascarid, are also known to be highly resistant but the suitability as an indicator of pathogeninactivation has never been tested. Pig slurry has to be stored for several months to inac-tivate pathogens but chemical treatment of slurry may reduce this time. The suitability ofA. galli as an indicator of slurry sanitation was tested by comparing the survival of eggsof A. suum and A. galli in pig slurry. In addition, the effect of urea treatment on inactiva-tion of ascarid eggs in relation to storage time was also tested. Nylon bags with 10,000eggs of either species were placed in...

Overlevelse af sundhedsskadelige mikroorganismer (bakterier/vira) eller parasitter ved slangeudlægning og nedfældning af gylle? Organic Eprints
Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Pedersen, Heidi Huus; Mejer, Helena.

Evaluation of soil microfungi as biological control agents against ascarid eggs Organic Eprints
Sundar, Thapa; Meyling, Nicolai V.; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Mejer, Helena.
Thick-shelled ascarid eggs have been reported to remain infective in the environment for several years, thus posing a prolonged risk of infection to animals and/or humans. The following in vitro study was therefore conducted to evaluate the negative impact of two species of naturally occuring soil microfungi (Pochonia chlamydosporia and Paecilomyces lilacinus), on the viability of Ascaridia galli, Toxocara canis and Ascaris suum eggs. Approximately 150 fresh eggs of individual ascarid species were embryonated on a 2% water agar in Petri dishes with or without a fungus (P. chlamydospria or P. lilacinus). On days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 post experimental set up (p.s.), the viability of the eggs in each experimental group was evaluated (destructive...

Cryptosporidium and Giardia in organic pig farms: a longitudinal study of seasonal- and age-related variation in species, genotypes and excretion levels Organic Eprints
Petersen, Heidi Huus; Jianmin, Wang; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Mejer, Helena; Ståhl, Marie; Dalsgaard, Anders; Olsen, Annette; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Enemark, Heidi.
Although pigs are commonly infected with Cryptosporidium and Giardia duodenalis, and thus potential reservoirs of zoonotic species (or genotypes), little is known about age-related infection levels, seasonal differences and genetic variation in naturally infected pigs. Thus, to characterise seasonal and age-related variation in prevalence and intensity of infections at farm level, (oo)cyst shedding was monitored at quarterly intervals (September 2011 to June 2012) in piglets (n=152), young pigs (n=234), finishers (n=230) and sows (n=240) from three organic, Danish farms. (Oo)cysts were quantified by immunofluorescence microscopy; and representative Cryptosporidium (n=75) and Giardia (n=67) positive subsamples were characterized by amplification and partial...

Ascaris suum infections in pigs born and raised on contaminated paddocks Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.
The transmission of Ascaris suum was studied in outdoor reared pigs. From May to June, 2001 6 farrowing paddocks were naturally contaminated with A. suum using experimentally infected seeder pigs. Early July, 1 sow farrowed on each paddock. One piglet per litter was slaughtered every second week starting week 3 post partum (p.p.) for registration of liver white spots and recovery of A. suum from the lungs and the small intestine. The last pigs were slaughtered week 19 p.p. Faeces was examined for eggs and blood was analysed for A. suum specific antibodies. Weaning took place week 7 p.p. by removing the sow. Paddock infection levels were estimated by regular examination of soil samples and in late June and late November using parasite naïve tracer pigs....

Spolormens æg - en udfordring i økologiske svinebesætninger Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena.

Studies on preventive strategies and alternative treatments against roundworm in organic pig production systems Organic Eprints
Borgsteede, Fred H.M.; Gaasenbeek, Cor P.A.; van Krimpen, M.M.; Maurer, Veronika; Mejer, Helena; Spoolder, H. A. M.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Vermeer, Herman M..
Organic and many ‘low input’ production standards for pigs require outdoor access, and as a consequence expose the animals to a wide range of potential endo- and ectoparasite infection sources. Conventional anthelmintics are used to control parasitic infections, but their preventive use is banned by the organic standards. The present paper investigates the potential of prevention of infection through better hygiene. Attempts were made to break the infection cycle through thorough pen cleaning 10 weeks after the pigs had been introduced to the pen. Although pen fouling can be reduced, the level of roundworm (Ascaris suum) infection was not reduced. Regular deworming with conventional medication is still required in addition to good hygiene.

Oesophagostomum dentatum and Trichuris suis infections in pigs born and raised on contaminated paddocks Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.
SUMMARY Transmission of Oesophagostomum dentatum and Trichuris suis was studied in outdoor reared pigs. Six farrowing paddocks were naturally contaminated in May to mid June 2001 by experimentally infected seeder pigs. Early July, 1 sow farrowed on each paddock and starting week 3 post partum (p.p.) the offspring was slaughtered serially every 2 weeks for recovery of O. dentatum and T. suis. Faeces was collected regularly for parasite egg counts and acid-insoluble ash (AIA) content as an indicator for geophagy. Weaning took place week 7 p.p. by removing the sow. Paddock infection levels were estimated in mid June (O. dentatum) and late November (O. dentatum and T. suis) using helminth naïve tracer pigs. Soil and vegetation samples were collected...

Development and survival of Ascaris suum eggs in deep litter of pigs Organic Eprints
Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Kyvsgaard, Niels Christian; Dalsgaard, Anders; Mejer, Helena.
Indoor transmission of Ascaris suum partly depends on the physico-chemical conditions in bedding material. Temperature,pH, aqueous ammonia, moisture, occurrence and development of A. suum eggs were therefore compared in different areas(resting, intermediate and latrine) of two deep litter pens on an organic farm in four seasons. There was some variation, but mean ammonia levels were generally very low (1·0–2·6mM) and pH levels were moderate (8·04–8·88) in all three areas. Relatively, resting areas were characterized by overall moderate moisture (36%) and moderately high temperature (35·7 °C)levels. The area contained few eggs (50 eggs g−1 DM) of which 17% were viable, and though only 4% were larvated and 0·7% appeared infective, it was more than in the...

Ikke-medicinsk kontrol af indvoldsorm i grise Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.

Performance of organic and low input livestock systems: a matter of sound design? Organic Eprints
Spoolder, Hans; Biavati, Bruno; Borgsteede, Fred; Davies, David; Klocke, Peter; Maurer, Veronika; Nagel, Philip; Nicholas, Phillipa; van Krimpen, Marinus; Mejer, Helena; Modesto, Monica; Strozzi, Gian Paolo; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Vermeer, Herman; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul; Zollitsch, Werner; Sundrum, Albert.
The QLIF project has targeted a variety of issues to make organic animal production (dairy cattle, pig, poultry) more safe, develop alternative methods to promote animal health and improve product quality. This workshop will discuss these aims as well as the QLIF achievements to date. It will also address our way of assessing the quality of our organic farms. We ask the question what the advantages are of doing this by looking at the output of a farm, such as yield, animal welfare and environmental issues. Alternatively, we also want to know what benefits there are in looking at how the farm is organised, via input factors such as housing design, nutrition, management quality. Two invited speakers will state their preference. Legislation, certification and...

Transmission and control of the parasite Ascaris suum (large round worm) in Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Gautam, Susmita; Dalsgaard, Anders; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
Ascaris suum is the most common intestinal worm in pigs irrespective of production system. However, organic farms which promote animal welfare (e.g. by providing pastures and bedding material) may further promote survival of the eggs through which the parasite is dispersed to new hosts. The parasite has a negative effect on production results and possibly impairs vaccines. A one year survey of 5 Danish organic farms therefore aimed at mapping the occurrence of parasite eggs in the farm environment, supplemented with laboratory and field studies, including serial necropsies of different age groups of pigs from 2 farms to monitor infection levels. The combined results showed that eggs were present on farrowing and weaning pastures, ensuring continuous...

Long-term survival of Ascaris suum and Trichuris suis eggs in relation to pasture management Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.
Background: Organic pig production systems are commonly characterized by high helminth prevalences. This problem is partly associated with access to outdoor facilities such as pastures and more knowledge is needed on long-term pasture infectivity patterns to improve farmer advisory services and guidelines on pasture management. Methods: Six identical paddocks were originally contaminated in the spring to autumn of 2001 by pigs infected with high levels of Ascaris suum and low levels of Trichuris suis. Since then, no further eggs have been deposited and 3 of the paddocks have been ploughed to a depth of 20 to 28 cm and re-sown once a year while 3 paddocks remained untouched apart from yearly cutting of the vegetation. In the late spring and late autumn...

This report reviews the available information on the welfare of pigs when maintained according to organic standards in Europe. It begins by overviewing the populations of organic pigs in different countries at the time of writing (2007), the organic standards which govern their management and the systems in which they are typically kept. It then reviews for each stage in the production cycle (sows, suckling piglets, weaned pigs and fattening pigs) the available literature on health and welfare problems which might be experienced by the animals and the hazards which might give rise to these problems. Finally the report reviews the methods current available for the measurement of pig health and welfare and the extent to which monitoring systems currently...
