In de inleiding van de serie 'Met Naturalis in zee' (Onderwatersport januari/februari 2003) werd een overzicht gegeven van 20 jaar koraalrifonderzoek door Naturalis in de Indo-Pacific. In deze aflevering wordt een beeld gegeven van de recente Naturalis expeditie naar Bali met enkele bijzondere waarnemingen. In de komende aflevering zal de aandacht worden gevestigd op enkele diersoorten van en nabij Bali die voor het eerst en nog nooit elders zijn waargenomen.

Global biogeography and phylogeography have gained importance as research topics in zoology, as attested by the steady increase in the number of journals devoted to this topic and the number of papers published. Yet, in a globalising world, with species reintroductions, invasions of alien species, and large-scale extinctions, unravelling the true biogeographic relationships between areas and species may become increasingly difficult. We present an introduction to the symposium ‘Biogeography: explaining and predicting species distributions in space and time’ held in Amsterdam in 2007, and the resulting papers as published in this special issue, including papers on crustaceans, birds and mammals.

Two different tectono-stratigraphic domains are recognised in the Cantabrian Mountains, Asturian-Leonese (Cantabrian Zone) and Palentian (Palentian Zone). The area under investigation belongs to the southern part of the Palentian Domain and attention is focused on the Upper Viséan to lowermost Bashkirian limestones at the village of La Lastra in northern Palencia. A new geological map of the Palentian Zone is accompanied by a more detailed map centred on La Lastra. The Barcaliente Limestone Formation (Serpukhovian to lowermost Bashkirian) occurs in the overturned limb of a recumbent anticline which constitutes the head of a south-verging major thrust unit, the Carrionas Thrust Sheet (Palentian Zone). Hoeksema ontdekte onbekende diersoorten van Bali, het zuurtjeskoraal, een slak die daarop leeft en enkele van hun naaste familieleden. Zowel bij de koralen als de slakken gaat het om bijzonder kleurrijke dieren.

De laatste expeditie van het Naturalis zeeteam, waarvan melding is gemaakt in Onderwatersport, heeft plaatsgevonden in 2005. Deze expeditie ging naar de Baai van Jakarta en de Duizend Eilanden. Hoewel de verwachtingen niet hoog waren zijn er toch leuke vondsten gedaan. Al toonde een vergelijking met de Naturalis collecties ook aan dat er in de loop van zo'n 75 jaar soorten zijn verdwenen zo vlak bij Jakarta.

INLEIDING De Kagerplassen, gelegen bij Warmond ten noorden van Leiden, bestaan uit een aantal met elkaar verbonden plassen, doorvaarten en boezemwateren (fig. 1). Deze plassen zijn een restant van de Haarlemmermeer, welke in 1852 werd drooggelegd. Zij dienen als boezemwateren voor het Rijnland. De wateraanvoer gaat via de inlaat van de Hollandse IJssel bij Gouda door de Rijpweteringse vaart, de Zijp en de Zijl en in mindere mate via de Haarlemmermeerringvaart ten oosten van het gemaal Leeghwater. De afvoer van dit water met een tamelijk laag chloridegehalte, maar met een hoog gehalte aan organisch materiaal, gaat via de uitlaat bij Katwijk en voor een klein deel via het gemaal bij Spaarndam, dus voornamelijk via Spriet en Laeck — Warmonder Leede en soms...

The south-western Indian Ocean islands, excluding the microcontinent of Madagascar, are geologically complex and diverse. They have been subject to drastic sea level changes, volcanic events and anthropogenic changes, all of which have contributed to confuse understanding of their avian biogeography. An array of factors have affected these avifaunas, based on palaeontological, historical and molecular evidence,which together have shown that avian biogeography is not congruent with the relative age and size of the islands.

During a week of fieldwork along the coast of Normandy, France, the author found a tropical carpet shell on the beach of Granville. Field guides could not properly identify the shell and therefore it was compared with the collections of the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden and the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam. This comparison resulted in four possible identifications - Ruditapes variegatus, Venerupis aurea, Ruditapes philippinarum and Ruditapes semidecussatus. However, the specific shell colour pattern does not fully correspond with the pattern of these four species, making identification of the shell difficult. Southeast Asia, and especially the Philippines-Indonesia-Papua New Guinea Archipelago, harbours the world’s highest marine diversity. This region also had a complex geological history. This raises the question whether these two attributes are related and, if so, how. To locally build high species richness in a region, the balance between speciation/immigration and extinction/exturpation should be positive over at least part of its geologic history.

The evolution of symbiotic relationships involving reef corals has had much impact on tropical marine biodiversity. Because of their endosymbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) corals can grow fast in tropical shallow seas where they form reefs that supply food, substrate and shelter for other organisms. Nederland heeft een lange traditie op het gebied van koraalrifonderzoek. Dit heeft deels te maken met het koloniale verleden. Veel van dit type zeeonderzoek kon vroeger worden uitgevoerd in nauwe samenwerking met de Koninklijke Marine, die schepen, oceanografische apparatuur en helmduikers beschikbaar stelde.
