Comparing environmental DNA metabarcoding and underwater visual census to monitor tropical reef fishes ArchiMer
Polanco Fernández, Andrea; Marques, Virginie; Fopp, Fabian; Juhel, Jean‐baptiste; Borrero‐pérez, Giomar Helena; Cheutin, Marie‐charlotte; Dejean, Tony; González Corredor, Juan David; Acosta‐chaparro, Andrés; Hocdé, Régis; Eme, David; Maire, Eva; Spescha, Manuel; Valentini, Alice; Manel, Stéphanie; Mouillot, David; Albouy, Camille; Pellissier, Loïc.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a revolutionary method to monitor marine biodiversity from animal DNA traces. Examining the capacity of eDNA to provide accurate biodiversity measures in species‐rich ecosystems such as coral reefs is a prerequisite for their application in long‐term monitoring. Here, we surveyed two Colombian tropical marine reefs, the island of Providencia and Gayraca Bay near Santa Marta, using eDNA and underwater visual census (UVC) methods. We collected a large quantity of surface water (30 L per filter) above the reefs and applied a metabarcoding protocol using three different primer sets targeting the 12S mitochondrial DNA, which are specific to the vertebrates Actinopterygii and Elasmobranchii. By assigning eDNA sequences to...

Comparaison des captures des grands poissons pelagiques en Martinique avec ou sans DCP ArchiMer
Laurans, Martial; Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Lagin, Alain-sabin.
In recent years, the use of fads in Martinique has evolved from an experimental stage to a productive one. This transformation results in the pitching up of operational device park by the regional fishery committee. Nevertheless, this technical change in fishing practices is not implemented in a homogeneous way all around the island; some differences exist especially between the Atlantic and the Caribbean coasts. From surveys carried out during an annual cycle on two main landing sites, this study describes the pelagic fishing activity around fads and in the open sea. A comparison of fishing strategies adopted in different places as well as an analysis of the results obtained by the fishing units in terms of species (size of catches and daily yields) allow...

Mise en place et exploitation des DCP en Martinique, aspects reglementaires et economiques ArchiMer
Laisne, L; Angelelli, P.
Since the beginning of 1980, the Martinique fishermen have suffered a deep crisis. The traditional ways of fishing, based on benthic fish exploitation, have seen the decreasing of their profitability due to the over-fishing of the narrow continental shelf offering few resources. The pelagic fishery had become the professional main source of income. This fishery equally encounter difficulties: denied rights of access in the EEZ of Caribbean islands, expensive costs of exploitation. The disposal of FADs offers new ways to the Martinique fishermen. In 1999, it was decided the disposal of a onetworko of 30 permanent FADs around Martinique. The mooring of these FADs must be followed by legal and economic adapted measures to reach the desired aim: the...

Démarche d'amélioration des DCP à la Martinique ArchiMer
Guillou, Annie; Lagin, Alain-sabin; Lebeau, Alain; Priour, Daniel; Repecaud, Michel; Reynal, Lionel; Sacchi, Jacques; Taquet, Marc.
Since 1983, the research on the optimal conception of FADs in Martinique was particularly focused on the improvement of their resistance to different maritime or human aggressions. Following several experimentations made with different types of fads, the choice was brought on light devices anchored in 1 500 to 2 000 m depths and an experimental approach was conducted to identify the causes of loss of fads and to attempt to modelize their hydrodynamic behaviour with relation to the sea conditions. Three mathematical models are used to simulate the fad behaviour under current action and swell, and to estimate the forces exerted on each part of the device. The results of this study are presented. The fad design used nowadays for the development of pelagic...

Proposition d'une nouvelle technique de peche du thon noir (Thunnus atlanticus) sous les DCP en Martinique ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Laurans, Martial; Reynal, Lionel; Lagin, Alain-sabin.
The length frequency distribution of blackfin tunas (Thunnus atlanticus) shows a significant difference between fishes caught with a longline, during Ifremer experimental surveys and fishes landed by fishermen who exploit martinican FADs. The fishing technique used could probably explain this. In fact, diving surveys have confirmed the presence of great concentrations of adult blackfin tunas under FADs. Big individuals stay during long periods between 20 and 50 meters under the FAD while small ones go up to the surface to feed on little flying fishes, at dawn principally. The bait and the line used at the moment around martinican FADs do not fit to adult blackfin tunas fishing. From these observations and following the tests realized by Ifremer in La...

The 1867 Virgin Island tsunami: observations and modeling ArchiMer
Zahibo, N; Pelinovsky, E; Yalciner, A; Kurkin, A; Koselkov, A; Zaitsev, A.
The 1867 Virgin Island tsunami was of a great effect for the Caribbean Islands. A maximal tsunami height of 10 m was recorded for two coastal locations (Deshayes and St. Rose) in Guadeloupe. The historical data of this event for the Caribbean Sea are discussed. The modeling of the 1867 tsunami is performed in the framework of the nonlinear shallow-water theory. The four different orientations of the tsunami source in the Anegada Passage are examined. The directivity of the tsunami wave in the Caribbean is investigated. The time histories of water surface fluctuations are calculated for several coastal locations on the coasts of the Caribbean Sea. Results of the numerical simulations are in reasonable agreement with data of observations.

Preservation state of metastable magnesian calcite in periplatform sediments from the Caribbean Sea over the last million years ArchiMer
Sepulcre, Sophie; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Vidal, Laurence; Thouveny, Nicolas; Bard, Edouard.
Carbonate-rich periplatform sediments represent an active carbon reservoir containing metastable aragonite and magnesian calcite (Mg-calcite, > 4 mol % MgCO(3)). Since Mg-calcite is highly soluble, the preservation state of this mineral provides information on past carbonate systems at water depths shallower than the lysocline. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the carbonate-rich fine fraction (< 63 mu m) was determined for the last 940 ka in a sediment core collected from the Walton Basin (Northern Caribbean Sea, 846 m water depth). Mg/Ca ratios for Mg-calcite showed clear glacial-interglacial cycles with high values (12 mol % MgCO(3)) during interglacials. Glacial Mg/Ca ratios were approximately 8 mol % MgCO(3) for the period from 940 ka to 400...

Observations sous-marines des communautes de poissons agregees autour des DCP en Martinique: resultats preliminaires ArchiMer
Laurans, Martial; Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Lagin, Alain-sabin.
Fishing with a beach seine for catching small pelagic fishes is a traditional activity in Martinique. Since the early eighties, an important decrease in the number of fishermen practising this activity has been recorded. In the context of high exploitation of reef resources, the beach seine presents a low selectivity, catching too many juveniles of demersal fish. The fads established in coastal areas, have been successfully used in others regions of the world for exploiting small pelagics. Thus, it could allow to favour a change of exploitation style of these resources in Martinique. In partnership, Ifremer, the Regional Council and the Fishing Committee have began an evaluation of the potentialities for this type of structures around the island. To...

Fingerprint of tropical climate variability and sea level in sediments of the Cariaco Basin during the last glacial period ArchiMer
Deplazes, Gaudenz; Meckler, A Nele; Peterson, Larry C.; Hamann, Yvonne; Aeschlimann, Beat; Günther, Detlef; Martínez‐garcía, Alfredo; Haug, Gerald H..
High‐resolution palaeorecords of climate are critical to improving current understanding of climate variability, its sensitivity and impact on the environment in the past and in the future. Sediments from the Cariaco Basin off the coast of Venezuela have proven to be sensitive recorders of tropical palaeoclimate variability down to an annual scale. However, the fingerprint of climate and sea level in the sediments of the last glacial period is still not completely understood. In this study, lamination analysis of sediments from the Cariaco Basin is extended to the last glacial period. Detailed sedimentological and geochemical analysis (laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry) reveals couplets of light‐coloured, terrigenous‐rich and...

Implementation of an ongoing FAD programme in Curacao (Netherlands Antilles) during the period 1993-2000 ArchiMer
Van Buurt, G.
In Curacao, deep-water fads with grp surface buoys were developed and tested. The first fad was deployed in 1993. Up to now, a total of 5 fads were deployed at the following depths: 730, 685, 700, 754 and 574 metres. Changes were made to the surface buoy, resulting in an improved design, the mkii surface buoy. One fad lasted three years and one month. The main features of the design used are: the use of a sparbuoy design with constant tension on the moving chain to avoid slamming and jerking of the surface buoy; liberal use of sacrificial anodes, and maintenance to replace these anodes about once a year; the use of a short anchor chain with depth buoys, that does not touch bottom; a one-piece inverted mushroom anchor. With the grp surface buoy, a reserve...

POTENTIAL RESPONSE OF CORAL REEF'S FUNCTIONAL STRUCTURE AND SNAPPER ABUNDANCE TO ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN SAN ANDRES ISLAND, COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
GONZÁLEZ-GAMBOA,Isabella; SANTOS-MARTÍNEZ,Adriana; HERRERA-MARTÍNEZ,Yimy.
ABSTRACT To determine the coral reefmorpho-functional structure of San Andrés, regarding functional benthic diversity and fish (Lutjanidae), we evaluated the condition of the coral structure on the leeward side of the island, which is an area impacted by tourism, through diving and fishing. Three sampling sites were evaluated during two years recording the distribution of benthic organisms, environmental variables and Snappers density (Lutjanidae). A low density of Lutjanusjocu and Ocyurus chrysurus was found, with a high density ofjuveniles of L. apodus and L. mahogoni, which showed a preference for reefs with submassive and brain corals. Algae especially Macroalgae and octocorals were those with the greatest coverage in the reefs, followed by inert...

GENETIC STATUS, SOURCE AND ESTABLISHMENT RISK OF THE GIANT TIGER SHRIMP (PENAEIDAE: Penaeus monodon), AN INVASIVE SPECIES IN COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN WATERS Acta biol.Colomb.
AGUIRRE-PABÓN,J.C; OROZCO BERDUGO,G. Jr; NARVÁEZ BARANDICA,J.C.
The tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is an Indo-Pacific species. Its global production between 1970 and 1980 exceeded all other shrimp species, which favored its introduction and cultivation outside its natural range in several countries of Africa, Europe, USA and South America. It is currently found in the coast of the Atlantic Ocean (Mexico, United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela and Colombia). Despite the risk involved, no studies have been conducted to evaluate their impact as a possible invasive species and their genetic condition. This study evaluated the genetic status and population origin of P. monodon in the northernmost Colombian Caribbean, analyzing the mitochondrial DNA control region (mtDNA-CR). 16 individuals were randomly...
