Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a revolutionary method to monitor marine biodiversity from animal DNA traces. Examining the capacity of eDNA to provide accurate biodiversity measures in species‐rich ecosystems such as coral reefs is a prerequisite for their application in long‐term monitoring. The 1867 Virgin Island tsunami: observations and modeling

The length frequency distribution of blackfin tunas (Thunnus atlanticus) shows a significant difference between fishes caught with a longline, during Ifremer experimental surveys and fishes landed by fishermen who exploit martinican FADs. The fishing technique used could probably explain this. In fact, diving surveys have confirmed the presence of great concentrations of adult blackfin tunas under FADs. Big individuals stay during long periods between 20 and 50 meters under the FAD while small ones go up to the surface to feed on little flying fishes, at dawn principally. Preservation state of metastable magnesian calcite in periplatform sediments from the Caribbean Sea over the last million years

The 1867 Virgin Island tsunami was of a great effect for the Caribbean Islands. A maximal tsunami height of 10 m was recorded for two coastal locations (Deshayes and St. Rose) in Guadeloupe. The historical data of this event for the Caribbean Sea are discussed. The modeling of the 1867 tsunami is performed in the framework of the nonlinear shallow-water theory. The four different orientations of the tsunami source in the Anegada Passage are examined. The directivity of the tsunami wave in the Caribbean is investigated. The time histories of water surface fluctuations are calculated for several coastal locations on the coasts of the Caribbean Sea. Results of the numerical simulations are in reasonable agreement with data of observations.

A new species and first record of Dracoderes (Kinorhyncha: Allomalorhagida: Dracoderidae) from American waters, with an identification key of the genus

Carbonate-rich periplatform sediments represent an active carbon reservoir containing metastable aragonite and magnesian calcite (Mg-calcite, > 4 mol % MgCO(3)). Since Mg-calcite is highly soluble, the preservation state of this mineral provides information on past carbonate systems at water depths shallower than the lysocline. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the carbonate-rich fine fraction (< 63 mu m) was determined for the last 940 ka in a sediment core collected from the Walton Basin (Northern Caribbean Sea, 846 m water depth). Mg/Ca ratios for Mg-calcite showed clear glacial-interglacial cycles with high values (12 mol % MgCO(3)) during interglacials. A new species of Dracoderes, D. spyro sp. nov., is described from Hispaniola Island (Caribbean Sea), and represents the first record of this genus in American waters. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of lateroventral spines on segments 3–4 and 6–9, lateral accessory spines on segment 5, lateroventral tubes on segments 2, 5 and 10, and laterodorsal tubes on segment 8. Additionally, a dichotomous key to the species level for the genus Dracoderes is included.

Fingerprint of tropical climate variability and sea level in sediments of the Cariaco Basin during the last glacial period

Fishing with a beach seine for catching small pelagic fishes is a traditional activity in Martinique. Since the early eighties, an important decrease in the number of fishermen practising this activity has been recorded. In the context of high exploitation of reef resources, the beach seine presents a low selectivity, catching too many juveniles of demersal fish. The fads established in coastal areas, have been successfully used in others regions of the world for exploiting small pelagics. Thus, it could allow to favour a change of exploitation style of these resources in Martinique. In Curacao, deep-water fads with grp surface buoys were developed and tested. The first fad was deployed in 1993. Up to now, a total of 5 fads were deployed at the following depths: 730, 685, 700, 754 and 574 metres. Changes were made to the surface buoy, resulting in an improved design, the mkii surface buoy. One fad lasted three years and one month. Recent brachiopods collected by the Snellius and Luymes expeditions to the Surinam-Guyana shelf, Bonaire-Curaçao region and Saba Bank area in 1966 and between 1969-72 are identified from 32 lots. Species belonging to the genera Glottidia, Cryptopora, Tichosina, Terebratulina, Eucalathis, Notozyga, Argyrotheca and Thecidellina are represented, mainly from shallow depths of less than 200m. No new species are recorded, but new occurrence records, particularly in the region of Saba Bank, add to knowledge of the geographic range of species.

Metacirolana agaricicola Kensley, 1984 from the Caribbean Sea of Colombia is redescribed, with particular reference to its sexual dimorphism. Metacirolana agujae n. sp., known only from Colombia, is decribed. The interspecific affinities of both species are discussed and notes on their habits are given.
