The author explains that the population dynamics study, descriptive and explicative way, the changes which happen in the structure and the parameters (growth rate, sex ratio, fecundity, mortality etc.) of a monospecific population, by the use of mathematical models which permit prediction and simulation. If the fish population is not exploited, it is necessary to sample it directly and obtain samples representative of the demographical structure by experimental fishing (like electrical fishing) or by selectivity corrections. If the population is exploited, often the exploited phasis of the stock is only studied from samples representative of the whole captures. Now it happens that there is an important difference between the demographical structure of the... |

In 2002, about 40% of the yield of the French purse seine fleet targeting bluefin tuna came from the Gulf of Lions, 38% from the Balearic Islands and about 22% from the Malta-Lybia area (a new area for this fleet). The fleet caught, in the Gulf of Lions, mostly juvenile bluefin (mainly 2 and 3 years old), whereas both juveniles and adults were targeted and caught in the Balearic and Maltese areas. As in 2001, the 2002 size composition of bluefin catches have been estimated from the EU log-books and both years looked very similar. Calculating Kolmogorov-Smirnov two sample tests between the yearly size compositions of 1990-1995 and those of 2001 and 2002, indicated significant differences between these two pools of data. Finally, we confirm that if the... |

Data used to generate the tables and figures presented here are based on daily catch and effort forms (1ogbooks') returned from fishing vessels which are licensed to fish in the Seychelles EEZ. Sometimes there is a delay in these being received at SFA, especially during and just after the second quarter of the year when most vessels are fishing in the Mozambique Channel. Readers should be aware that many of the figures presented here (especially the most recent) are subject to revision (usually upwards) as more data become available. The date upon which the SFA database was closed prior o the generation of the statistical tables is shown at the head of each table. Data used to generate the tables and figures presented here are based on daily catch and effort forms (logbooks) returned from fishing vessels that are licensed to fish in the Seychelles EEZ and for purse seiners, as well as from data collected via the tuna sampling programme conducted during transhipment in Port Victoria. Sometimes there are delays in these being received at SFA, especially for longliners that often spend up to a year at sea. For purse seiners the delays are usually during and just after the second quarter of the year when most vessels are fishing in the Mozambique Channel and are not necessarily using Port Victoria for transhipment. Readers should note that many of the figures presented here are subject to revision (usually upwards) as... |

Commercial catches of the crabe girafe, Ranina ranina in the Seychelles are analyses. Male crabs are dominant in the catch (65_310= male to 35_310= female) Large individuals present in the catch (exceeding 115mm) are all males. The size at first maturity for female crabs is 89.5mm. One spawning season is observed annually, around December Von Bertalanffy growth estimates obtained from length frequency data using the Hasselblad method to separate the modes followed by modal progressions, are as follows: Males: L oo = 160mm, k = 0.24 per year: Females: L oo = 137mm, k = 0.12 per year. Alternative estimates are also given using the Von, Bertalanffy equation assuming seasonally oscillating growth. The total mortality which corresponds to the natural mortality... |

The number of purse seiners active in the western Indian Ocean averaged 53 during the first quarter compared to 41 vessels during the same period last year. Fishing activity was high during the first half of the year with a record for the month of March of 55 licensed vessels. The fishing results for the first quarter were not as good as those previously recorded in the last three years, however there are still 28 logbooks outstanding at the time of publication. Catch rates averaged 14.6 MT/day compared to 22MT/day in 1991 and 26MT/day in 1990. The high number of vessels licensed during the first quarter can be attributed to increased number of licenses issued to French and Japanese vessles. 1992 has been a notably strong El Nino year, giving rise to a... |

153 experimental sets were made with stackable Antillean fish traps in depths of 5 to 30 m in the waters around the Galápagos Island (Ecuador), between Octobre and April 1983. 1,885 fish were caught of 18 species mainly of the families Pomadasyidae, Acanthuridae, Sparidae and Serranidae. The mean catch rate was 5,5 Kg per lift or 0,4 Kg.h-1, and the mean weight of the fish caught was 0,45 Kg. The optimum set duration was found to be between 2 and 18 hours (possibly indicating a high rate of escape). This study took place during the period of the ”El Niño”, when catches of fish in this area generally were low, and it is not known what effect this had. The catches were good compared with other shallow areas, but the fishes caught were mainly of medium... |

Annual nominal catch statistics and fishery fleet statistics are presented for the Indian Ocean tuna fisheries for the period 1989-1998. The former are presented by species, country, year and by gear. Details are also given of the number of fisheries crafts in the national fleets, in order to provide information on the economic and technical development of the fisheries and to provide an approximate idea of fluctuations in fishing effort. Nominal catch data are also distributed together with a programme for data query and analysis, FISHSTAT PLUS, available through the IOTC Web site (http://www.iotc.org) or, on request, by e-mail, on magnetic media or CD-ROM. |
