Systematic detection of BMAA (β-N-methylamino-L-alanine) and DAB (2,4-diaminobutyric acid) in mollusks collected in shellfish production areas along the French coasts ArchiMer
Reveillon, Damien; Sechet, Veronique; Hess, Philipp; Amzil, Zouher.
The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is naturally present in some microalgal species in the marine environment. The accumulation of BMAA has widely been observed in filter-feeding bivalves that are known to consume primary producers constituting the base of complex aquatic food webs. This study was performed to assess the occurrence of BMAA and isomers in mollusks collected from nine representative shellfish production areas located on the three French coasts (Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean sites). The use of a highly selective and sensitive HILIC-MS/MS method, with D5DAB as internal standard, revealed the systematic detection of BMAA and DAB, in concentrations ranging from 0.20 to 6.7 μg g-1 dry weight of digestive gland tissues of...

Production of microalgal concentrates by flocculation and their assessment as aquaculture feeds ArchiMer
Knuckey, R; Brown, M; Robert, Rene; Frampton, D.
A novel technique was developed for the flocculation of marine microalgae commonly used in aquaculture. The process entailed an adjustment of pH of culture to between 10 and 10.6 using NaOH, followed by addition of a non-ionic polymer Magnafloc LT-25 to a final concentration of 0.5 mg L−1. The ensuing flocculate was harvested, and neutralised giving a final concentration factor of between 200- and 800-fold. This process was successfully applied to harvest cells of Chaetoceros calcitrans, C. muelleri, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Attheya septentrionalis, Nitzschia closterium, Skeletonema sp., Tetraselmis suecica and Rhodomonas salina, with efficiencies ≥80%. The process was rapid, simple and inexpensive, and relatively cost neutral with...

Large-scale microalgae production for nursery rearing of marine bivalves OMA
De Pauw, N.; Verboven, J.; Claus, C..
The feasibility of large-scale bloom induction of nutritionally suited natural phytoplankton species, to feed a semi-industrial nursery of edible shellfish, built on the Belgian coast, was tested. The outdoor microalgal production unit consisted of four tanks of 100 m² surface each (two of 1 m depth and two of 0.5 m depth), equipped with different mixing devices. The cultures were run as chemostats in which seawater was enriched with commercial inorganic N, P and Si fertilizers. Depending on the season, between 5-10 and 80% of the culture volume could be harvested daily, with algal densities ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 cells per ml. By manipulation of operational parameters such as detention time, nutrient levels and nutrient ratios (N: Si: P), unsuited...
