Understanding Public Support for Indigenous Natural Resource Management in Northern Australia Ecology and Society
Zander, Kerstin K; Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods, Charles Darwin University; The Northern Institute, Charles Darwin University; kerstin.zander@cdu.edu.au.
Increased interest in indigenous-led natural resource management (NRM) on traditionally owned land in northern Australia has raised important questions in relation to policies that compensate indigenous Australians for providing environmental services. A choice experiment survey was mailed out to respondents across the whole of Australia to assess if and to what extent Australian people think that society benefits from these services and how much they would pay for them. More than half the respondents would in principle support indigenous NRM in northern Australia, with a high willingness to pay for carbon, biodiversity, and recreational services. Social aspects of indigenous NRM, however, were not valued by the society, emphasizing the need for awareness...

Preferences of Local People for the Use of Peatlands: the Case of the Richest Peatland Region in Finland Ecology and Society
Tolvanen, Anne; Finnish Forest Research Institute, Finland; Thule Institute, University of Oulu, Finland; anne.tolvanen@metla.fi; Juutinen, Artti; Finnish Forest Research Institute, Finland; Thule Institute, University of Oulu, Finland; Department of Economics, University of Oulu, Finland; artti.juutinen@metla.fi; Svento, Rauli; Department of Economics, University of Oulu, Finland; rauli.svento@oulu.fi.
We analyze the potential for socioeconomically sustainable peatland use by investigating conflicting interests, revealing trade-offs that people are willing to accept, and studying whether opinions are dependent on socioeconomic and demographic factors. Opinions toward five forms of peatland use and seven peatland ecosystem services were surveyed in Northern Ostrobothnia in northern Finland in 2011. Choice experiment (CE) was used to reveal trade-offs in land use preferences, and groups of respondents were identified using the latent class model (LCM). We identified three classes of respondents in which environmentalists showed a high preference toward the cessation of peat production and increase of peatland restoration, the production-oriented class...

Willingness to pay for ecosystem conservation in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest: a choice modeling study Ecology and Society
Hjerpe, Evan E.; Conservation Economics Institute; evan@conservationecon.org; Hussain, Anwar; Forest Policy Center, Auburn University; Conservation Economics Institute; anwar@conservationecon.org.
Forest ecosystems contribute to human welfare in important ways, but because of the nonmarket nature of many of the goods and services produced, both markets and governments fail to optimize their production commensurate with their economic and ecological significance. Despite the recent proliferation of nonmarket environmental valuation in the literature, the incorporation of nonmarket values into public forest decision making has been limited by institutional and methodological barriers. To address this disconnect, we conducted a case study to quantify conservation values for the Tongass National Forest in a manner conducive for public forest planning. A choice experiment featuring proposed forest management alternatives with changes in critical...

Razafimandimby, Haja.
The central purpose of this thesis is the development of fresh fishery products with on one hand the issue of organizational methods adopted by stakeholders in the fisheries sector in France and on the other hand the question of explanatory factors in consumer preferences for these products. The neo-institutional theory of governance structures is used to analyze different organizational methods adopted in the industry. The theory of innovation is mobilized to study the contribution of organizational innovations in the development of fresh products. The results of the study of governance structures reveal the complementarity between the market and hybrid forms concerning the supply of supermarkets and hypermarkets in France. Mainly observed Hybrid forms...

YEH, Yawen; SAWADA, Manabu.
The purpose of this study was to clarify quantitatively Japanese consumers’ valuation of frozen edamame. Two hundred and fifteen consumers living in Obihiro City, Hokkaido, served as respondents. Four different types of frozen edamame (domestic frozen edamame, frozen edamame from Taiwan, frozen edamame from Thailand, and frozen edamame from China) were analyzed in a choice experiment using a conditional logit model. AN EMPIRICAL ASSESSMENT OF CONVERGENT VALIDITY OF BENEFIT TRANSFER IN CONTINGENT CHOICE: INTRODUCTORY APPLICATIONS WITH NEW CRITERIA AgEcon
Jiang, Yong; Swallow, Stephen K.; McGonagle, Michael P..
Benefit transfer has been an important, practical policy tool appealing to government agencies, especially when time or budget is constrained. However, the existing literature fails to support convergent validity of benefit transfer using the stated-preference method. This empirical study examines the convergent validity of benefit transfer using the choice modeling method, a potentially promising technique compatible with the heterogeneity of the transfer contexts. Based on a survey designed for Rhode Island (RI) and modified only slightly for Massachusetts (MA), regarding coastal land management, four convergent validity tests were conducted on the benefit transfer from RI to MA. Although results fail to support convergent validity in all aspects, the...

Differential Influence of Relative Poverty on Preferences for Ecosystem Services: Evidence from Rural Indonesia AgEcon
Glenk, Klaus; Barkmann, Jan; Schwarze, Stefan; Zeller, Manfred; Marggraf, Rainer.
Ecosystem services generate benefits that enter human consumption either directly or indirectly via their contribution to human production activities. In this contribution, we provide evidence that (i) the demand of peasants for ecosystem services in rural Indonesia depends on relative poverty; and that (ii) the type of reaction to poverty depends on the specific relation of the ecosystem services to peasant production and consumption. In early 2005 a representative choice experiment study was conducted in the Lore Lindu area in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, to quantify regional economic preferences (marginal willingessto- pay: MWTP) for four different ecosystem services (n=249; rattan and water availability, shading in cacao agroforestry, population size...

What to Choose? The Value of Label Claims to Fresh Produce Consumers AgEcon
Bond, Craig A.; Thilmany, Dawn D.; Bond, Jennifer Keeling.
We examine consumer response to label information using a hypothetical choice experiment on red leaf lettuce attribute bundles. Using survey responses, several mixed logit models with random parameters and varying correlation assumptions are estimated that provide estimated of marginal utilities ( and marginal values) of various attributes related to general health claims, specific nutrition and health claims, certification logos, and certified organic claims (relative to the conventional reference group) for this fresh produce product. We find that consumers distinguish between labeling claims, and that attribute bundling effects are present, suggesting the results from main effects (linear) models may be misleading. Furthermore, the results imply that...

Welfare Effects of Food Miles Labels AgEcon
Caputo, Vincenzina; Vassilopoulos, Achilleas; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Canavari, Maurizio.
We assessed the consumer welfare effects of two generic food miles labels: carbon dioxide (CO2) emission label and number of miles label. Using data from a choice experiment, our results generally suggest that a mandatory labeling policy for either type of label would have a positive welfare effect on both informed and uninformed consumers. However, a label informing consumers about the number of miles the food product has travelled provides greater positive welfare effects than a label informing consumers about the amount of CO2 emission.

Do Local Production, Organic Certification, Nutritional Claims, and Product Branding Pay in Consumer Food Choices? AgEcon
Batte, Marvin T.; Hu, Wuyang; Woods, Timothy A.; Stan, Ernst.
This research furthers the assessment of consumer demand for locally produced foods, while also considering a host of other food attributes that may interact to influence consumer utility. Using stated preference data from a choice-based conjoint analysis survey instrument, we estimate willingness-to-pay for processed food products (blackberry jam) that are differentiated with respect to their branding, the location of their production, certification as organically produced, branding as a product of a small family farming association, and carrying a State Proud certification. Although price is the most important single attribute influencing consumer choice for our sample, consumers also were willing to pay more for food products produced in their state or...

Food Authenticity, Technology and Consumer Acceptance AgEcon
Hobbs, Jill E.; McDonald, Jillian; Zhang, Jing.
Traceability and authenticity issues have gained increasing prominence in food markets and create both opportunities and challenges for the food industry in providing credible information to consumers. Internal molecular tagging is an emerging technology with the potential to deliver traceability and authenticity assurances. A key question for the food industry in adopting new technologies is consumer acceptance. This paper explores consumer attitudes toward traceability and authenticity and the role of information in affecting consumer acceptance of new technologies, using molecular tagging as an example. Data were gathered from an online survey conducted in Canada in December 2010. To determine whether product-specific effects exist, two versions of the...

Eliciting values for environmental attributes of a private good using a real choice experiment AgEcon
Michaud, C.; Llerena, D..
Markets for environmentally friendly products have been expanding during the last decade. These products provide both private benefits to the consumer and environmental – public – benefits. The demand for environmentally friendly products has consequently received a growing interest. Our study aims at studying consumers' choices for a non-food product, i.e. roses, with different environmental attributes. We combine a choice experiment with a laboratory experiment to provide real economic incentives.

USING A CHOICE EXPERIMENT TO ESTIMATE THE DEMAND OF HUNGARIAN FARMERS FOR FOOD SECURITY AND AGROBIODIVERSITY DURING ECONOMIC TRANSITION AgEcon
Birol, Ekin; Kontoleon, Andreas; Smale, Melinda.
Hungarian home gardens are small farms that are repositories of agrobiodiversity and provide food security during economic transition. We use a choice experiment to test the hypothesis that farmer demand for home gardens will decrease as markets develop with European Union accession. Data represent 22 communities with varying levels of market and social infrastructure. We find that farmers located in more economically developed communities choose to be less dependent on small farms for food and prefer lower levels of agrobiodiversity. Findings indicate that the survival of small farms is jeopardized by economic change, but point to some conservation policy options.

Italian wine consumer behaviour and wineries responsive capacity AgEcon
Malorgio, Giulio; Hertzberg, Anna; Grazia, Cristina.
This paper analyzes habits and motivations behind wine consumption in Italy and focuses on the attributes affecting wine choice, through interviews and a choice experiment approach. We show that consumers are interested in a wide concept of quality, which covers the whole production process. Both the notoriety of the industrial brand and the designation of origin constitute important quality signals. However, the use of the designation of origin to assess quality at the moment of purchase requires a certain level of product knowledge and involvement. Supermarkets and stores play an increasing role in the commercialization of wine on the final market. Nevertheless, the appreciation of private label wines is relatively low. Finally, we provide some...

Camarena-Gomez, Dena M.; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel.

Measuring Willingness to Accept for GM Food by Characteristics AgEcon
Tae-Kyun, Kim; Hyun-Ji, Lee; Na-Kyoung, Hong.
Korean consumers' willingness to accept (WTA) for GM food are studied in this paper. This study compares hypothetical and nonhypothetical responses to choice experiment questions. We test for hypothetical bias in a choice experiment involving GM rice with differing characteristic attributes and multinomial logit model is applied to predict the estimated results. In general, hypothetical responses predicted higher probabilities of purchasing GM rice than nonhypothetical responses. Thus, hypothetical choices overestimate willingness to accept for GM rice. The results of this paper could contributes to government's GM food policies and subsequent studies, also improving economic welfare of farmers and consumers.

Rider Preferences and Economic Values for Equestrian Trails AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Pelton, Marie E.; Pagoulatos, Angelos.
Recreational horseback riding is an important but less studied component of the equine industry. Using choice experiment data collected from a survey conducted in Kentucky, this study assesses rider preferences and economic values associated with various equestrian trail characteristics. Results indicate that although individuals have different opinions, trail characteristics such as length of trail, scenic views, and distance from home all have significant economic implications. In addition, riders prefer trails that are restricted for horse-riding only. Policy implications on maintaining current and creating new trails are given based on these results.

Andalusian Demand for Non-Market Goods from Mountain Olive Groves AgEcon
Arriaza Balmón, Manuel; Gomez-Limon, Jose Antonio; Kallas, Zein; Nekhay, Olexandr.
Agricultural multifunctionality is the recognition of the joint exercise of economic, environmental and social functions by this sector. In order to make this concept operative for the design of public policies, it is necessary to estimate the social demand for such functions. The main objective of this article is to present an empirical application in this line. For this purpose we have taken the agricultural system of mountain olive groves in Andalusia (Southern Spain) at risk of abandonment after the decoupling of the EU subsidies as a case study. The economic valuation technique used is the Choice Experiment. According to the results, there is a different contribution of each attribute to the improvement of the Society level of utility.
