Organisation of the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage in tropical streams of different orders in North-Eastern Brazil Ecología austral
Gomes Pio,Jéssica F; da Silva Pereira,Tiago; Calor,Adolfo R; Copatti,Carlos E.
We selected streams located in north-eastern Brazil with the objective of assessing the effect of streams of different orders (1st, 2nd, 3rd) on the distribution and composition of benthic macroinvertebrates in the rainy and dry seasons. A total of 12822 individuals and 62 taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates were obtained, of which Chironomidae was the taxon with the most individuals (60.08% of the total). The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage ordination demonstrated that streams of the 3rd order had a different assemblage structure compared to streams of the 1st and 2nd order. This distinction may be the result of taxa substitution. The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage structure was correlated with environmental variables. In conclusion, the...

Evaluation of an ant sampling protocol (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in three modified environments located inside an austral Atlantic Forest area of Brazil Ecología austral
Lutinski,Junir Antonio; Lutinski,Cladis Juliana; Iop,Samanta; Mello Garcia,Flávio Roberto.
This study evaluated the efficiency as a tool for ant survey of a sampling protocol composed of six methods, and examined the role of environmental features on the efficiency of methods complementarity . We applied them in three environments (pine, eucalyptus and native forest) in the National Forest of Chapecó and the effect of the characteristics of these environments on methods complementarity. The sampling methods were pitfall traps, two types of bait (sardines and glucose), sweep net, entomological umbrella and Malaise trap. The protocol efficiency of the protocol in the ant inventory was evaluated based on rarefaction curves, richness estimators and records of occurrence of ants. The protocol captured the greatest richness on native forest...

Incorporation of dietary fatty acid in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) - A methodological approach evidencing losses of highly unsaturated fatty acids ArchiMer
Robin, Jean; Skalli, A.
A quantitative approach is presented to evaluate fatty acid incorporation in fish. Fatty acid composition of European sea bass juvenile was studied during an experiment using 6 isoproteic (54%) and isolipidic (18%) diets containing 0.23, 0.56, 0.72, 0.86, 1.01 and 1.86% DM n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA). Whole body fatty acid compositions were studied at the beginning and after 52 and 81 days feeding, fatty acid profiles evolved during time under dietary influences. Incorporations of individual fatty acids into total lipids were calculated as increases in individual fatty acids as percentages of the increase in total fatty acids during growth, on a per animal basis. Relative incorporations (RI) so defined generated similar profiles for the...

Composition and microstructure of magma bodies from effective medium theory ArchiMer
Taylor, Maj; Singh, Sc.
The extent and seismic properties of magma bodies beneath the subsurface are normally ascertained via seismic methods. The seismic properties of such bodies depend on the composition and microstructure of both melt and crystals. Using effective medium theory, we assess the effect of microstructure, geometry and orientation of melt and crystals on the seismic properties, namely P- and S-wave velocities and anisotropy. We find that S-wave velocity and anisotropy are key observables in determining the composition and microstructure of magma bodies.

What shapes amino acid and sugar composition in Mediterranean floral nectars? Naturalis
Petanidou, T.; Van Laere, A.; Ellis, W.; Smets, E..
We studied the amino acid (AA) composition of the floral nectars of 73 plant species occurring in a phryganic (East Mediterranean garrigue) community and investigated whether AA and sugar composition is shaped by evolutionary (plant phylogeny), ecological (flowering time as a direct effect of summer drought) and coevolutionary (pollinator partnership) constraints. Our study utilised an extensive plantpollinator matrix compiled in the same area where the plants had been sampled. Using HPLC we detected 22 AA compounds/groups of compounds, out of which 15 were commonly present in almost all nectars. Among all AAs, phenylalanine was the most abundant, especially in keystone (‘‘cornucopian’’) plant species visited by many insect species, such as the...
