Listeria monocytogenes in HIV-infected patients in a hospital of Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Norberg,A. N.; Maure,E. A. P.; Svaiter,N.; Gonçalves,A. S.; Sanches,F. G..
A survey was carried out in a hospital of Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the period from July 1999 to March 2002, to determine the infection rate of Listeriamonocytogenes in HIV+ patients with diarrhea symptoms; 134 samples were processed by microbiological methods. The results demonstrated 12.68% of positive samples. However, no statistical differences were observed for age or sex in the studied group, suggesting that this microorganism should be regarded in the differential diagnosis of infectious processes in HIV+ patients in the area.

Cryptosporidium SP in HIV-infected individuals attending a Brazilian University Hospital J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Langoni-Júnior,G.; Souza,L. R..
The aim of the current work was to evaluate the occurrence of Cryptosporidium sp in AIDS patients in a region of São Paulo State, Brazil. Patients were divided into groups according to CD4+ T lymphocyte count and use of potent antiretroviral treatment. Two hundred and ten fecal samples from 105 patients were fixed in 10% formalin and subjected to centrifuge formol-ether sedimentation. Slides were stained with auramine and confirmed by modified Ziehl-Neelsen. Cryptosporidiosis occurrence was 10.5% with no relationship among gender, age or the presence of diarrhea. The number of oocysts in all samples was small, independent of CD4+ T lymphocyte count, HIV plasma viral load, and presence of diarrhea. These results may be due to the reduced prevalence of...

Incidence of Campylobacter in pigs with and without diarrhea Rev. Microbiol.
Modolo,José Rafael; Margato,Luiz Florêncio Fernandes; Gottschalk,Arnold Frederico; Lopes,Carlos Alberto de Magalhães.
Two hundred pigs (1- 21 weeks old), from five piggeries in São Paulo State, Brazil, were divided in two groups of 100 animals each, G1 with diarrhea and G2 without diarrhea. Campylobacter was recovered from 43% of G1 and 34% of G2 specimens, and was more frequently recovered from 0-4 week old piglets. C. coli was the most common species (44.2% in G1 and 32.4% in G2), followed by C. jejuni/coli (16.3% in G1 and 23.5% in G2). Campylobacter counts were significantly higher in G1 (<FONT FACE="Symbol">£</FONT> 108 UFC/g) than in G2 (<FONT FACE="Symbol">£</FONT> 104 UFC/g) (p &lt; 0.01), which suggests that the bacterium may play a role at least in the aggravation of the diarrheic process.

Virulence factors of Escherichia coli isolated from diarrheic calves Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rigobelo,E.C.; Gamez,H.J.; Marin,J.M.; Macedo,C.; Ambrosin,J.A.; Ávila,F.A..
One hundred seventy-three Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves from northwestern São Paulo State, having diarrhea were examined for the production of thermolabile (LT) and thermostable (ST) enterotoxins and for the presence of virulence factors associated with bovine colibacillosis. Eighty-five (49.1%) of the E.coli strains produced toxins; 53 isolates were detected as producing STa toxin, and 9 also produced LT toxin. By PCR, 23 isolates were shown to harbor only the LT-II gene. Nine (5.2%) isolates harbored Shiga toxin genes: four carried the stx2 gene, four the stx1 gene and one carried both. Three of the isolates showing stx1 also carried the eae gene. Among the E. coli isolates examined for susceptibility to 10 antimicrobial agents,...

Isolation of Clostridium perfringens and C. difficile in crab-eating fox ( Cerdocyon thous - Linnaeus 1776) from Northeastern Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Almeida,J.C.; Silva,R.O.S.; Lobato,F.C.F.; Mota,R.A..
ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to isolate Clostridium perfringens and C. difficile in crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) from Northeastern Brazil. Stool samples of 18 captive crab-eating foxes from four states of Northeastern Brazil (Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba e Pernambuco) were collected and subjected to C. perfringens and C. difficile isolation. Suggestive colonies of C. perfringens were then analyzed for genes encoding the major C. perfringens toxins (alpha, beta, epsilon and iota), beta-2 toxin (cpb2), enterotoxin (cpe), and NetB- (netB) and NetF- (netF) encoding genes. C. difficile strains were analyzed by multiplex-PCR for a housekeeping gene (tpi), toxins A (tcdA) and B (tcdB) and a binary toxin gene (cdtB). Unthawed aliquots of stool samples...

Evaluation of a multiplex PCR method to detect enteroaggregative Escherichia coli Biocell
Rüttler,M.E.; Yanzón,C.S.; Cuitiño,M.J.; Renna,N.F.; Pizarro,M.A.; Ortiz,A.M..
Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) has been implicated in sporadic diarrhea in children and adults and has been identified as the cause of several outbreaks worldwide. The HEp-2 test remains the gold standard for identification of this pathotype. A 60-65 MDa plasmid encodes the aggregative adherence fimbriae (AAF/I and AAF/II), a transcriptional activator ( aggR gene), the enteroaggregative heat-stable enterotoxin EAST1 ( astA gene) and a cytotoxin (Pet). The standard assay for EAEC is performed only in research laboratories, because it is expensive, labor intensive and time-consuming. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) offers the possibility of rapid diagnosis. In the current study, a multiplex PCR assay which checks aggR and astA genes was...

Isolation in HRT-18 cells and molecular analysis of a BCoV strain from diarrheic feces of naturally infected calves BABT
Stipp,Danilo Tancler; Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Bodnar,Lívia; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) may cause acute diarrhea in newborn calves, leading to significant economic losses for cattle farmers. There are several diagnostic techniques used to detect BCoV in calf fecal samples, but virus isolation still has advantages for antigenic and genomic characterization. This study describes the isolation in HRT-18 cells and molecular characterization of Brazilian BCoV wild-type strains. Three fecal samples from diarrheic 30 day-old calves were inoculated in HRT-18 cell monolayers, which were then evaluated for HA titers and tested using semi-nested PCR followed by RFLP and sequencing. Two samples were successfully isolated and presented HA titers of 16 and 32 units per 25 mL. The results were confirmed using semi-nested PCR and...

Bovine coronavirus detection in a collection of diarrheic stool samples positive for group a bovine rotavirus BABT
Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Stipp,Danilo Tancler; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Neonatal diarrhea is an important cause of economic losses for cattle farmers. The main viral etiologies of enteric diseases are group A rotaviruses (GARV) and the bovine coronavirus (BCoV). Although both viruses infect calves of the same age, the occurrence of mixed infections is still under studied. The present study describes the co-infection of BCoV and GARV in stool samples. Forty-four diarrheic fecal samples from calves up to 60 days old that had previously tested positive for GARV by SS-PAGE were analyzed using semi-nested PCR for BCoV. A product with 251 bp of the BCoV nucleoprotein gene was amplified in 15.9% (7/44) of the samples, demonstrating that co-infection is not an unusual event. These results reinforce the need for testing for both GARV...

An outbreak of winter dysentery caused by bovine coronavirus in a high-production dairy cattle herd from a tropical country BABT
Takiuchi,Elisabete; Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Filippsen,Patrícia; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a known cause of winter dysentery (WD) in adult cattle. The morbidity of the disease is high, that results in a significant decrease in milk production and consequently, economic losses. In the present study, we report on a classical outbreak of WD that affected a high-production Holstein dairy herd raised in a tropical country. The lactating batch included 154 cows, and 138 (90%) presented diarrhea in a short (nine days) period of time. Three (2%) cows died. The other batches of animals did not become ill. The evolution of the disease in the herd, including the clinical signs and epidemiological features, strongly suggested a WD case. Semi-nested PCR and RFLP confirmed that BCoV was the cause of the infection. Samples tested...
