Assessment of ecological risk to populations of aquatic invertebrates IBSS Repository
Tsytsugina, V. G..
On the base of experimental data and cytogenetic studies of marine and freshwater invertebrates natural populations it was shown that different species had approximately equal part (%) of full value posterity at the same average level of chromosome mutagenesis for populations, independing on deleterious factors and females fecundity. This phenomenon made it possible to calculate specimens reproductive contribution for species with different females fecundity and to assess expected reduction of population adaptive potential and the increase of ecological risk at different levels of population damage. It is suggested that the adaptation to pollution will be more effective in populations with high female fecundity.

Life history traits of Characidium pterostictum (Characiformes, Crenuchidae) along the longitudinal gradient of a Neotropical river in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fitz,Raquel C.; Rodenbusch,Cesar A.; Dala-Corte,Renato B.; Azevedo,Marco A..
ABSTRACT Life history traits of Characidium pterostictum Gomes, 1947 (Characiformes, Crenuchidae) from three different reaches of the upper Sinos river, southern Brazil, were described and comparatively analyzed according to the longitudinal gradient. For all reaches, results indicated a seasonal reproductive strategy with a higher intensity during warmer months of higher photoperiod (November to February). Only females were found in the upstream reach and they were more numerous than males in all the sampled reaches. Mean absolute fecundity ranged from 5189 (±2131 SD) to 7394 (±3807 SD), whereas mean relative fecundity (oocytes per mg of female total weight) ranged from 1.08 (±0.40 SD) to 1.12 (±0.29 SD). Oocyte development was characterized as synchronic...

Differences on allocation of available resources, in growth, reproduction, and survival, in an exotic gastropod of Physidae compared to an endemic one Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Núñez,Verónica.
Physa acuta Draparnaud, 1805 is an invasive gastropod that can affect local species. In Argentina, it is widespread and abundant, even in environments inhabited by the native species Stenophysa marmorata Guilding, 1828. Its predominance raises the question whether this could be explained by a more successful energy allocation in functional requirements (growth, reproduction and survival) compared to S. marmorata. This study was aimed at comparing growth rates, as well as survival and fecundity, between both species under laboratory conditions. Individuals born on the same day were grouped in four per aquaria and kept under controlled conditions of food, light, and temperature. Snails were weekly measured (maximum shell length), and growth rates were...

Verba,Júlia T.; Lampert,Vinicius R.; Azevedo,Marco A..
This work describes the reproduction of Gymnogeophagus labiatus (Hensel, 1870) from an upper stretch of Sinos river, southern Brazil, based on the analysis of 174 males and 132 females captured in monthly samples taken from January to December 2007. Results showed that reproductive activity occur in spring and summer although ripe males were found along the year. The standard length of the smallest ripe male was 104.74 mm (Lt) and the smallest ripe female was 55.00 mm (Lt). There was a significant difference in total sex ratio, with 1.32 males to each female (χ2 = 5.76). Males were much more abundant in March (1.75 males: 1 female) and December (5 males: 1 female). Females were more abundant in the 62├77 mm interval (1 male: 2.36 female) while males were...

Reproductive characteristics of characid fish species (Teleostei, Characiformes) and their relationship with body size and phylogeny Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Azevedo,Marco A..
In this study, I investigated the reproductive biology of fish species from the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. I also investigated the relationship between reproductive biology and body weight and interpreted this relationship in a phylogenetic context. The results of the present study contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the reproductive strategies present in the species of this family. Most larger characid species and other characiforms exhibit a reproductive pattern that is generally characterized by a short seasonal reproductive period that lasts one to three months, between September and April. This is accompanied by total spawning, an extremely high fecundity, and, in many species, a reproductive migration. Many species...

Spatial distribution and egg production in squat lobsters (Decapoda: Munididae, Munidopsidae) from the collection of the Museu de Zoologia of the Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Hernáez,Patricio.
ABSTRACT: Spatial distribution and egg production of squat lobsters is examined from specimens deposited in the collection of the Museu de Zoologia of the Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP), Brazil. A total of 1,346 specimens of squat lobsters were analyzed, out of which 169 were ovigerous females. Ovigerous females contained ten species of Munididae (n = 165) and three of Munidopsidae (n = 4). Eleven of the thirteen studied species were distributed along the Brazilian coast, while two of the remaining species in other marine regions. The analysis of bathymetric distribution revealed the presence of four species on the continental shelf (< 200 m depth: M. spinifrons, M. pusilla, M. irrasa, M. flinti), two on the first layer of the continental slope...

The anti-fecundity effect of 5-azacytidine (5-AzaC) on Schistosoma mansoni is linked to dis-regulated transcription, translation and stem cell activities ArchiMer
Geyer, Kathrin K.; Munshi, Sabrina E.; Vickers, Martin; Squance, Michael; Wilkinson, Toby J.; Berrar, Daniel; Chaparro, Cristian; Swain, Martin T.; Hoffmann, Karl F..
Uncontrolled host immunological reactions directed against tissue-trapped eggs precipitate a potentially lethal, pathological cascade responsible for schistosomiasis. Blocking schistosome egg production, therefore, presents a strategy for simultaneously reducing immunopathology as well as limiting disease transmission in endemic or emerging areas. We recently demonstrated that the ribonucleoside analogue 5-azacytidine (5-AzaC) inhibited Schistosoma mansoni oviposition, egg maturation and ovarian development. While these anti-fecundity effects were associated with a loss of DNA methylation, other molecular processes affected by 5-AzaC were not examined at the time. By comparing the transcriptomes of 5-AzaC-treated females to controls, we provide evidence...

Reproduction and growth of the deep-sea brittlestar ophiura-ljungmani (lyman) ArchiMer
Tyler, Pa; Gage, Jd.
Reproductive biology and population dynamics of Ophiura Ijungmani were studied by measuring disk diameters and by examining oocyte size-frequencies and fecundity from a sequential seasonal series of large samples from a 2900 m deep Permanent Station in the Rockall Trough (Northeast Atlantic). Egg size (max. 90 !lm) and fecundity (up to 57000 eggs per individual) suggests indirect planktotrophic development, while a clear annual cycle in gametogenesis, with probably synchronous spawning in JanuaryFebruary, confirms a marked seasonality that is also seen as an annual, summertime set of postlarvae on to the bottom. Analysis of size structure of the population indicates annually discrete year classes with a maximum longevitv of around 10 years. lndividuals...

Goudeau, M; Lachaise, F; Kubisz, P; Goudeau, H.
Electrophysiological measurements and related cytological controls were done on immature and submature oocytes of Homarus gammarus . By chromatography (HPLC) and radio-immunoassays (RIA) it was established that submature oocytes displayed different ecdysteroids. Furthermore, the structure of the stalk (funiculus) for the laid eggs attachment was analyzed. it consisted of the two superimposed vitelline envelopes which were likely modified by the cortical reaction exudate during the fertilization process. In addition, the successive secretory phases, regarding to the embryonic envelopes were evidenced. Finally, the ecdysteroid titers of embryonic stages were measured.

Fécondité de Nephrops norvegicus dans le golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Conan, Gérard; Guenole, A.; Omnes, Marie-helene.
Females of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) incubate their eggs under the abdomen for a period of several months. The authors estimated the individual fecundity of N. norvegicus (1) before spawning, and (2) at the end of the incubation period. From these two relationships, they then calculated the average egg loss. Egg loss seems to be relatively higher for small females than for large ones. The mean egg loss estimated for the Bay of Biscay (45%) differs from the only other existing value (75%) calculated by other authors for Portuguese waters. Egg loss may regulate stock-density, and may be a mechanism intervening in stock-recruitment.

Peculiarities of reproduction and generative production of tropical copepods ArchiMer
Sazhina, L.
The aim of the present investigation consisted in revealing the regular natural changes of fecundity in mass pelagic copepods of the World Ocean tropical zone. Particular emphasis was placed on determination of the clutch size, duration of development, rate of generative production formation at both organism and population levels, and connection of these processes with environmental conditions. The major difficulty lay in the fact that most mass species of tropical copepods are laying eggs immediately into water thus complicating the determination of quantitative characteristics of reproduction.

Characteristics of one sea winter Atlantic salmon stock caught on Elorn river from 1974 to 1984 ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
From observations gathered on grilse populations sampled during the fishing period (March -mid-June) or after the fishing season, the authors noted: a strong heterogeneity and length, the mean value of which increase from May to December, a sex-ratio not different from 1 male for 1 female, a high relative fecundity superior to those of spring salmon population sampled. The comparison between fish of local and foreign origins did not allow to observe significant differences between the biological characteristics studied (weight, length, sex-ratio and fecundity).

Fecundity, growth rate and survivorship at the interface between two contiguous genetically distinct groups of Semibalanus balanoides ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Bourget, Edwin; Tremblay, Rejean.
On the western coast of the Atlantic, according to the literature, 2 distinct groups of Semibalanus balanoides occur with a distinct interface near the Miramichi Estuary, New Brunswick, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. On each side of this interface, the groups are characterized by clinal variations for MPI (mannose-6-phosphate isomerase) and GPI (glucose-6-phosphate isomerase). The present study was carried out to determine whether selection occurs at this interface, to establish how early in the sessile life period it occurs and to examine the selecting forces involved. Reciprocal transplant experiments of newly settled individuals to both sides of the interface were carried out. No significant differences specifically linked to source or destination were...
