Coastal habitat alterations such as the loss of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) and hardening of shorelines could have cumulative effects on valuable fishery resources. To investigate this effect, we developed a multiscale modeling framework for blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Areal coverage of shoreline land cover and SAV for Mobile Bay, Alabama, were combined with information from small-scale biological studies and long-term, large-scale commercial fishery data to model the potential effects of marginal habitat losses on the blue crab fishery. We applied stochastic variation in annual recruitment to the fishery to estimate probabilities for sustainable harvests under scenarios of habitat loss. The simulations suggested... |

Abstract The dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, is a well-known and widespread marine fish assessed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Analyzing the genetic diversity of this species is, therefore, of utmost importance and necessary for conservation purposes. Microsatellites are molecular tools with advantages that are ideal for population analyses. This study provides the first set of species-specific microsatellite loci for E. marginatus that can be applied when assessing both intra- and interpopulation genetic variation. Twenty microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for the dusky grouper by genotyping 20 individuals obtained from the North Eastern Atlantic Ocean (n = 4) and from the South Western... |

The full exploitation of the world fishery resources has drastically modified the prospects and conditions for progress in fisheries. It was detenninant in the change of the Ocean Regime. Moreover, it widened considerably the range of issues which have to be addressed for an efficient use of marine living resources. Assessment approaches for complex fisheries, carrying capacity of basins and management of bivalve mollusc stocks, natural variability of fish stocks and management implications, methods for access regulation, economic rent, resources and use rights allocation, nature of aitisanal fisheries, strategies for fishery development in Third World countries, international dimensions of fisheries, etc. are among the issues reviewed in this book by... |

The european red spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas, is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. The fishery is described fleet, fishing areas, fishing strategy and fishing gear ; fishing effort, yield, c.p.u.e, and complementary.catches ; resource condition. Its specific problem, the economic overfishing, is analysed. Finally, it has been tried to assess the fishing regulation impact (minimum market size, fishing seasonal close, fishing sanctuaries). |

Three species of oysters have been or are cultivated in Europe: Crassostrea angulata, C. gigas, and Ostrea edulis. If we follow the taxonomic critera of Grassé, the European oysters belong to the group of Mollusca, class of Lamellibranchia or Bivalves, order of Filibranchia, family Ostreidae with two genera: C. angulata (Lamarck), Portuguese, cupped oyster; C. gigas, (Thunberg), Japanese or Pacific, cupped oyster; Ostrea edulis (Linné), fiat European oyster. Some authors think that C. gigas and C. angulata belong to the same species. lndeed, Ranson stated that the characteristics of the larvae are the same, and Menzel obtained viable hybrids (F2) between these two oysters. In marine fisheries science, the application of social sciences and the increasing use of a multidisciplinary approach have enriched fisheries research through new paradigms. The stance on fisheries governance aims to complement bio-economic approaches and to break with the “tragedy of the commons” premise by focusing on the institutions and network actors at the heart of knowledge, representations, actions and decisions systems. Although the French-European context is largely determined by The Common Fisheries Policy, governance levers and an organised network of actors have been identified in demersal and benthic fisheries. In the present study, the observation of dialogue meetings identified the stakeholder strategies and interactions used to activate... |

This publication provides a presentation of the steps followed in the construction of "bio-economic" models of fisheries. The topic is limited to the theorical models which deal with the producer's behavior and for which an analytical solution can be derived. The following types of models are analysed : (i) static and deterministic, (ii) dynamic and deterministic, (iii) static and stochastic. |

Introduction : It is now clear that the world's fishery resources are being subjected to exploitation at or above their capacity to produce maximum sustainable yields. At the same time as these trends are being felt, there is a very large wastage of fishery resources from discarding unwanted catches at sea. At the end of each fishing operation a part of the catch is often returned to the sea after sorting by the fishermen. A 1994 FAO report provided an estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27 millions of tons per year compared to 50 million tons of direct human consumption. A more recent FAO document estimated that discards were in the order of 20 million tons in 1997. The majority of the world's fisheries are multi-species in nature and... |

The works carried out during this course (March-August 2015) alowed to correct the datasets and to study the variation in catches of albacore tuna from 1967 to 2014 (except for the years 1987 to 1990) based on 3 gears: the trolling line, the line with cane and the pelagic trawl. Simultaneously, key ICCAT delivred was provide information to expert groups, with a view to defining fishing quotas. Catches released and fishing effort (defined by the number of vessels and the time spent at sea) have varied considerably over these 50 years, and have been increasing in recent years, after having decreased sharply. Fishing today is concentrated on the edge of the continental shelf, whereas it was very oceanic before. It is mainly juveniles that are caught, while... |

A survey of the glass-eel fishery in the Loire estuary in 1987 (265 boats, 117 tons gasseel, 13733 fishing trips) showed that 16 fishery species constitute the by-catch (49,3 million individuals, mainly juveniles, among which 98 % consist in flounder, sprat and brown shrimp). The analysis of catches in space and time leads to proposaIs for Iimiting the impact during the last fishing weeks. Taking into account the naturai mortality rates of the concerned juveniles, an attempt is made to estimate the actuai impact of the glasseel fishery, after a delay. Only 10 % of the caught brown shrimps wouid have been recruited in the summer shrimp fishery. Up to 85,5 to 97,6 % of juvenile fishes would have disappeared during the following year by natural mortality. |
