Microparticulate feeds for Penaeid larvae ArchiMer

The mass production of penaeid larvae still depends on live foods such as diatoms, Chlorella and Artemia . However, it requires much facilities, maintenance expenses, and labor to produce a desired amount of life foods safely and constantly. Also, the nutritive value of planktonic organisms is occasionally variable and this makes the use of live food for mass culture restrictive. Therefore, it is necessary to develop microparticulate diets as a substitute for live foods to further increase the productivity of seed for shrimp culture.

Tropical marine fish larvae vary in their requirements for live planktonic food. Selection of live prey species for culture depends on larval size and larval tolerance of water quality. This report describes some of the cultured prey species, and their uses and limits as effective food for fish larvae. Methods are presented for the culture of phytoplankton, rotifers, copepods, and other live feeds.

Bacteries associees aux production de Brachionus plicatilis ArchiMer

Bacteria associated with semi-continuous culture of Brachionus plicatilis , which is used as the first food of marine fish larvae, were counted on Zobell 2216 E medium and identified. The numbers of bacteria were very high in both Brachionus (about 10 super(11) bact. per ml of digestive content) and in water (from 1.6.10 super(6) to 4.7.10 super(7) bact. per ml). The cultures were studied at driving a time when mortalities occurred frequently. The introduction of a Pseudomonas) phenon at a proportion of about 50% to the dominant microflora persisted in time and was little influenced by diet. Effects of nutritional requirement of live food organisms on growth and survival of barramundi/seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch) larvae. ArchiMer

Larvae of barramundi (Lates calcarifer ) reared intensively in some Australian hatcheries have suffered periodic high mortalities which have been ascribed to nutritional deficiencies in the live food organisms used, particularly deficiencies of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Barramundi larvae reared in an experimental system and fed on four diets, representing combinations of supplemented and unsupplemented rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis ) and supplemented and unsupplemented brine shrimp (Artemia salina ). Supplementation of rotifers and brine shrimp with a commercially available microencapsulated diet increased the levels of several polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food organisms.

Estructura de la comunidad bentónica y ecología trófica de Scianeidae (Pisces: Osteichthyes) en el estuario del Río de la Plata OceanDocs

Benthic communities of the Río de la Plata estuary and their trophic link with Micropogonias furnieri, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Menticirrhus americanus, Cynoscion guatucupa, Macrodon ancylodon and Umbrina canosai, six species of the Sciaenidae Family, were studied. Benthic composition was characterized using 122 sampling sites between 1999 and 2005. Multivariate and univariate statistical tools were used to analyze diversity, abundance and biomass patterns. A total of 370 taxa were found at the study area. Four areas were established using benthic composition: Inner Río de la Plata (RdP), middle RdP, outer RdP and Marine zone. Exploitation et optimisation de la production des cystes du crustacé "Artemia tunisiana" (bowen et sterling, 1978) dans la saline de Sfax OceanDocs

La saline de Sfax constitue le meilleur site pour l’exploitation et la production d’Artemia en Tunisie. La production de cystes est exploitée chaque année pour être utilisée dans l’alimentation des larves de poissons. Cette production est estimée à 30 kg de cystes poids sec. Toutefois, lors de nos campagnes de récolte, nous avons enregistré de grandes pertes de cystes occasionnées par les vents emportant les cystes qui seront mélangés avec le sable. Afin de minimiser les pertes et optimiser la production naturelle de la saline, nous avons jugé utile, d’installer des barrages dans les coins des bassins à Artemia pour s’opposer à l’action du vent. Data considered in this paper were obtained during a research cruise carried out on board of RV Dr. E.L. Holmberg from INIDEP (Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Desarrollo Pesquero) during March-April 2000 in the area between 48°S and 55°S (S Patagonian) region, SW Atlantic. From 61 bottom trawls a total of 355 specimen belonging to 11 skate species were collected. This represents, in number, 1.8 of the total species biomass. A comparative study on the feeding habits of Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus) in Nyanza Gulf Lake Victoria and sewage fish ponds OceanDocs

Gut content analysis of Oreochromis niloticus from the Nyanza Gulf, Lake Victoria showed that the bulk of the food items ingested constituted bottom deposits and blue green algae. Among the live food items ingested, blue green algae (Cyanophyceae) constituted 53.6%, the diatoms (Bacillariophyaceae) 19.7%, aquatic invertebrates (mainly Copepoda, Cladocera, and Rotifera) 12.9%, desmids (Desmidaceae) 7.7% and lastly the green algae (Chlorophyceae) 6.2%. Trophic spectrum of Cynoscion guatucupa (striped weakfish) was analyzed through stomach content of individuals coming from two areas of Buenos Aires coast (38° 30'S - 41° 30'S): Argentine - Uruguayan Fishing Common Zone (AUFCZ) and El Rincón area (Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic). The stomach contents of 3323 individual captured in research cruises carried out during 2004 and 2005 was determined. In the diet 39 prey items were identified corresponding to 4 Phyla. Feeding of Argentine hake during winter 1994, between 50 and 370 m of depth, in the studied area (34°50'-47°S), is based on the consumption of zooplanktonic crustaceans, fishes and cephalopods. Maximum feeding incidence is found at 36°-40°S (51. ), in sea layer of 80-130 m deep (62. ) and between 8:00-10:00 hours (36,6. ). Cluster analysis shows five spatial groups, with similar length distributions and characteristic principal prey items combination. The males of all sizes show a trend to feed on euphausids and hiperiids amphipods. The females eat more quantities of hake, short fin squid and other fishes. Régime alimentaire du diagramme gris "Plectorhynchus mediterraneus" (guichenot, 1850), (poisson, haemulidae) des côtes Mauritaniennes OceanDocs

Le régime alimentaire de diagramme gris Plectorhynchus mediterraneus, étudié en fonction des saisons et de la taille, a porté sur 488 spécimens de longueurs à la fourche (Lf) variant entre 17,2 et 42,1 cm. Le coefficient de vacuité moyen est de 47,95%. Ce poisson se nourrit principalement de Crustacés Amphipodes et secondairement de Crustacés Isopodes. Les Décapodes, les Bivalves, les Céphalopodes et les Annélides sont des proies complémentaires de premier ordre, tandis que les Gastéropodes, les Chordés, les Poissons et les vrais crabes représentent des proies complémentaires de deuxième ordre. Les Crustacés Amphipodes constituent l’aliment de choix de ce poisson pendant toutes les saisons et quelle que soit sa taille.

Los hábitos alimentarios del congrio de profundidad Bassanago albescens fueron estudiados por medio del análisis de los contenidos estomacales. Las muestras provinieron de campañas de investigación llevadas a cabo por el Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) durante el año 2009, en dos zonas de la Plataforma Continental Argentina (Norte: 36°S-41°S y Sur: 44°S-47°S). De los 222 estómagos analizados, 189 (83,78%) contenían alimento, identificándose un total de 34 ítems presa agrupados en 7 categorías. Los valores de %IRI indicaron que la principal categoría presa de la dieta fueron los cefalópodos, seguidos por isópodos y anfípodos. Studied the effect of the predation of Noctiluca scintillans, Sagitta friderici and larvae of Engraulis anchoita in planktonic community of the coastal waters off Buenos Aires province from samples obtained of a permanent station EPEA (38°28’ S, 57°41’ W, 48 m depth) from March 2000 through April 2001. The composition of the diet of the three species predators considering appearances quantitative and qualitative was determined. It found that N. scintillans consumed mainly diatoms and copepod eggs. A research program was carried out to improve and facilitate rotifer (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) culturing as well as to assure their optimal nutritional quality as a prey, concentrating on the development of a dry and complete rotifer diet that does not require the use of algae and does result in a HUFA rich <i>Brachionus</i>. Growth response of penaeid postlarvae to dry diets containing <i>Artemia</i> biomass meal OMA

The results are presented of a feeding experiment conducted with post-larvae of <i>Penaeus monodon</i> and <i>P. vannamei</i> using formulated dry feeds in which <i>Artemia</i> biomass was incorporated. The total and partial substitution for Artemia nauplii were evaluated. Production and application of on-grown <i>Artemia</i> in freshwater ornamental fish farm OMA

This paper describes a pilot culture system for the production of on-grown <i>Artemia</i> in freshwater ornamental fish farms. The system had 21 culture units, each consisting essentially of three components: an oval-shaped raceway, an air-water lift system and two waste collectors. Using artificial seawater at 20 ppt for culture and at a mean production rate of 3 kg/m<sup>3</sup> of water in a 12-day cycle, the system had a production capacity of 8 metric tons of on- grown <i>Artemia</i> a year.
