Material embodiment and energy flows as efficiency indicators of soybean (Glycine max) production in Brazil REA

As the requirement for agriculture to be environmentally suitable there is a necessity to adopt indicators and methodologies approaching sustainability. In Brazil, biodiesel addition into diesel is mandatory and soybean oil is its main source. The material embodiment determines the convergence of inputs into the crop. Moreover, the material flows are necessary for any environmental analysis. This study evaluated distinct production scenarios, and also conventional versus GMO crops, through the material embodiment and energy analysis. GMO crops demanded less indirectly applied inputs. The energy balance showed linearity with yield, whereas for EROI, the increases in input and yield were not affected.

Resistance levels to two strains of Potato virus Y (PVY) in transgenic potatoes cv. Achat Horticultura Brasileira

Two transgenic potato clones of cv. Achat, denominated 1P and 63P were challenged with two Potato virus Y strains (PVY O and PVY N), under greenhouse conditions, to be evaluated for resistance to these strains. Optical density values of the Elisa readings of samples from the transgenic plants were compared to readings from samples of the inoculated non-transformed plants. Clone 1P was extremely resistant to both PVY strains, reflected by not being systemically infected. Clone 63P, however, presented partial resistance to both PVY strains as local or systemic infection was delayed in some days. These results confirm the previously reported extreme resistance to PVY of clone 1P.

Extreme resistance to two Brazilian strains of Potato virus Y (PVY) in transgenic potato, cv. Achat, expressing the PVYº coat protein Horticultura Brasileira

The coat protein (CP) gene of the potato virus Y strain "o" (PVY O) was introduced into potato, cultivar Achat, via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Sixty three putative transgenic lines were challenged against the Brazilian strains PVY-OBR and PVY-NBR. An extremely resistant phenotype, against the two strains, was observed in one line, denominated 1P. No symptoms or positive ELISA results were observed in 16 challenged plants from this line. Polyploid fish and shellfish: Production, biology and applications to aquaculture for performance improvement and genetic containment ArchiMer

Polyploids can be defined as organisms with one or more additional chromosome sets with respect to the number most frequently found in nature for a given species. Triploids, organisms with three sets of homologous chromosomes, are found spontaneously in both wild and cultured populations and can be easily induced in many commercially relevant species of fish and shellfish. The major consequence of triploidy is gonadal sterility, which is of advantage in the aquaculture of molluscs since it can result in superior growth. Die zunehmende Verbreitung gentechnisch veränderter Organismen (GVO) wirft die Frage nach möglichen wirtschaftlichen Konsequenzen auf. Die parallele Existenz von GVO- und GVO-freier Ware im Markt kann mit Kosten- und Nutzeneffekten verbunden sein und spielt somit aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Sicht eine wachsende Rolle für die Unternehmen der Ernährungswirtschaft. Under this policy, there is a zero tolerance level for GM material that has not received EU authorization. Zero tolerance, however, has to be operationalized – what does an exporting country have to do to prove it is in compliance with zero tolerance? The Protocol on Triffid flax was formally proposed by the Canadian flax industry, not the Canadian government, and accepted by the European Commission. Adequate public research capacity is key to the appropriate development of biotechnology, including genetically modified (GM) crops. While commercial crops can be introduced without intensive local research (i.e. insect resistant GM cotton), introducing products of public research depend on indigenous capacity. IMPACT OF IDENTITY PRESERVATION OF NON-GMO CROPS ON THE GRAIN MARKET SYSTEM AgEcon

The impact of identity preservation (IP) for genetically modified grains (GMOs) on the grain handling system for a typical region in the Eastern Corn Belt is examined. A cost minimizing linear programming model of the transshipment system from farms to grain elevators to grain users tracks shipments and costs through the marketing system. This study compares two different grain segregation strategies: segregating grain within the elevator and designating specific elevators as IP-only facilities. As the cost per unit for grain segregation increases, the designated plant strategy becomes the most cost efficient strategy.

The regulatory regime for contamination permits the imposition of import bans with neither a scientific justification nor a risk assessment. No scientific assessment of Triffid flax was done prior to the import ban. The import regime put in place to deal with the contamination of flax with the GM-flax CDC Triffid provides no rationale for the thresholds of safety established for the testing regime. The EU is consistently pushing for commercial, economic and social considerations to be included, along with science, in decision-making.
