CHEMICAL CONTROL OF ASIAN SOYBEAN RUST AS A FUNCTION OF CULTIVAR, ROW SPACING AND SPRAY BAR SUPPORT SYSTEMS REA
Hoffmann,Laercio L.; Roehrig,Rafael; Boller,Walter; Forcelini,Carlos A..
ABSTRACT Product deposition and foliar surface cover are highly impacting factors on the efficiency of foliar fungicides applied to soybean cultivars, due to their low mobility, with side effects on Asian soybean rust (ASR) control. Spray bar support systems, such as the air curtain (Vortex®) and the use of nozzles along the bar (Dropleg®), stand out as an alternative to obtain a better distribution of fungicide throughout the plant. In this study, two spray bar support systems (Vortex® and Dropleg®) were, therefore, evaluated and compared with the conventional spraying method based on the biological efficacy in ASR control. In order to do this, two harvests, with three spacing between rows and two cultivars were employed. Vortex® and Dropleg® spray bar...

Effect of polymorphisms in the Slc11a1 coding region on resistance to brucellosis by macrophages in vitro and after challenge in two Bos breeds (Blanco Orejinegro and Zebu) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Martínez,Rodrigo; Dunner,Susana; Toro,Rubén; Tobón,Jaime; Gallego,Jaime; Cañón,Javier.
The resistance/susceptibility of selected cattle breeds to brucellosis was evaluated in an F1 population generated by crossing animals classified as resistant (R) and susceptible (S) (R x R, R x S, S x R, S x S) based on challenges in vitro and in vivo. The association between single nucleotide polymorphisms identified in the coding region of the Slc11a1 gene and resistance/susceptibility was estimated. The trait resistance or susceptibility to brucellosis, evaluated by a challenge in vitro, showed a high heritable component in terms of additive genetic variance (h² = 0.54 ± 0.11). In addition, there was a significant association (p < 0.05) between the control of bacterial survival and two polymorphisms (a 3'UTR and SNP4 located in exon 10). The...

Genetic control of Eucalyptus urophylla and E. grandis resistance to canker caused by Chrysoporthe cubensis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Guimarães,Lúcio Mauro da Silva; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Lau,Douglas; Rosse,Leonardo Novaes; Alves,Alexandre Alonso; Alfenas,Acelino Couto.
Chrysophorte cubensis induced canker occurs in nearly all tropical and subtropical regions where eucalypts are planted, causing losses in both wood quality and volume productivity, especially so in the warmer and more humid regions of Brazil. The wide inter and intra-specific genetic variability of resistance to canker among Eucalyptus species facilitates the selection of resistant plants. In this study, we evaluated resistance to this pathogen in five Eucalyptus grandis (G) and 15 E. urophylla (U) trees, as well as in 495 individuals from 27 progenies derived from crosses between the trees. In the field, six-months-old test seedlings were inoculated with C. cubensis. Lesion length in the xylem and bark was measured eight months later. The results...

Velez,Leandro S; Silva,Adriano Márcio F; Santos,Carlos AF; Assunção,Emanuel F; Silva,Matheus S; Souza,Elineide B; Gama,Marco Aurélio S.
ABSTRACT Onion’s (Allium cepa) slippery skin caused by Burkholderia gladioli pv. alliicola is one of the bacterial diseases that stand out in producing regions of the Brazilian Northeast. Given the importance and potential threat of this disease, and the absence of resistant varieties, the aim of this study was to evaluate the reaction of onion genotypes to slippery skin and to analyze the tolerance stability of the most promising genotypes to different strains of the bacteria. Nine strains of B. gladioli pv. alliicola were artificially inoculated in onion bulbs cv. Baia Periforme and the three most aggressive strains (CCRMBG39, CCRMBG172 and CCRMBG212) were selected to evaluate the tolerance to the disease. Fifty-eight onion genotypes were challenged with...

Reaction of melon genotypes to Rhizoctonia solani Horticultura Brasileira
Michereff,Sami J; Andrade,Domingos EGT; Sales Júnior,Rui.
The intensive exploration of melon (Cucumis melo L.) crops in the Brazilian Northeast favors the occurrence of root diseases such as the Rhizoctonia canker, caused by Rhizoctonia solani. Twenty melon genotypes were challenged against the pathogen isolates RS-9 and RS-10 aiming at selecting those potentially useful for breeding programs and/or integrated disease management. Seeds were planted in infested soil (50 mg of colonized rice grains kg-1 of soil). Disease severity was assessed 15 days after inoculation, by means of a disease scale from 0 to 4, used later to cluster genotypes in five classes. None of the genotypes presented immune-like reaction to R. solani, independent of the pathogen isolate. Disease severity ranged from 6.2 to 85.4% and from 7.8...

Carmona,Paula Andrea O; Pinheiro,Jadir B; Amaro,Geovani Bernardo; Silva,Giovani Olegario da; Peixoto,José Ricardo; Cares,Juvenil Enrique.
ABSTRACT One of the main obstacles for food production in many developing countries, as in Brazil, is the damage caused by root-knot nematodes, mainly those belonging to the genus Meloidogyne. This study aimed to assess the resistance levels of 44 sweet potato genotypes to M. javanica, M. incognita race 1 and M. enterolobii. These researches were carried out in 2014, under greenhouse conditions in Brasília-DF, Brazil. A completely randomized design with six replicates of one plant/plot/treatment was used. We determined the gall index (GI) and egg mass index (EMI) in the root system of each plant, the number of eggs and juveniles per gram of root with galls and the nematode reproduction factor. M. javanica was less aggressive and reproduced in only 9.09% of...

Santos,Gil R dos; Castro Neto,Manoel D de; Ramos,Leandro N; Café-Filho,Adalberto C; Reis,Ailton; Momenté,Valéria G; Pelúzio,Joenes M; Ignácio,Maíra.
The gummy stem blight (Didymella bryoniae) and the downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis) are two foremost melon (Cucumis melo) diseases, considering their effects on yield and fruit quality. Despite the importance of such diseases, relatively few studies have been done so far on the identification of resistance sources to D. bryoniae and P. cubensis in Brazil. This work aimed at evaluating the resistance of commercial melon genotypes to the gummy stem blight and the downy mildew. Firstly, the most aggressive and representative D. bryoniae isolate was selected. Subsequently, the resistance of 86 melon genotypes to stem infection was studied upon greenhouse conditions by inoculating with the previously selected isolate. Afterwards, the resistance to...

Reaction of faba bean genotypes to Rhizoctonia solani and resistance stability Horticultura Brasileira
Assunção,Iraildes P; Nascimento,Liliane D; Ferreira,Mércia F; Oliveira,Francisco J; Michereff,Sami J; Lima,Gaus SA.
The production of faba bean (Phaseolus lunatus) is limited due to the occurrence of Rhizoctonia canker, caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani. In order to select materials with potential for use in faba beans breeding programs and/or disease integrated management, 72 genotypes were evaluated and also stability of the disease resistance in relation to different pathogen isolates, inoculum densities and soil type. The seeds were sown in soil infested with the pathogen by the addition of colonized substrate (rice grains). The evaluation of genotypes was done after 15 days, using a note scale to discriminate the genotypes into five reaction classes. None of the 72 genotypes showed immunity to R. solani and only four genotypes (F-42, F-49, F-53 and F-58)...

ABSTRACT: The endoparasitic sedentary phytonematodes of genera Heterodera, Globodera (known as cyst nematodes, CN) and Meloidogyne (the root-knot nematodes, RKN) are major crop phytopathogens, causing estimated losses of US$ 125 billion annually in the world. These plant-parasitic nematodes share some parasitism mechanisms, which ensure host-tissue invasion and host-defense evasion. The establishment and maintenance of the sophisticated molecular plant-nematode interaction are based upon several secreted molecules that access plant cellular processes, transforming them in enlarged, multinucleate, and metabolically active feeding cells. Nematicides applications are usually expensive, inefficient and environmentally hazardous. Crop rotation, bio-control...
