At the beginning of its introduction, following the massive mortality rate of 1970-1971 that struck the Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata (COMPS and GRAS 1973), the oyster from the Pacific, Crassostrea gigas, displayed excellent growth in addition to exceptional hardiness and resistance to mortality. But, since 1973, in most of the farming areas, there has been a slowdown in the growth of the oysters and an at times quite pronounced decrease in their quality. It was in order to better understand their adaptation to the environment and the causes of the lowering of their growth rate and their condition that a study was undertaken in 1974, in one of the largest areas of flat cultivation of the Marennes-Oléron basin, located on the east coast of the... |

The evolution of microbial biomass based on chlorophyll a, pheopigments, proteins, particulate carbon and nitrogen, ATP and total viable aerobic bacterias measurements, is studied on three oyster ponds in relation with different densities of reared oysters Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg). Chlorophyll a important amounts characteristics of theses middles (13 to 100µg.1(1) are in part consumed when the density of oysters is important, comparatively ATP increase to 30µg.1(1). With important values of (ATP/carbon) 10(3) ratios, upper than 10, we could think that the development of large silicified phytoplanktonic species should be favoured by oysters particularly the diatom Navicula ostrearia (Bory) |

During the winter 2000/2001, several outbreaks associated with the consumption of shellfish were declared in France. Following these events, a close cooperation was organized between administrations and laboratories (DGAL, DPMA, InVS, AFSSA, Ifremer, CHU-Dijon and CNC) to gather competences and to manage the situation. This report synthesizes the information collected during these outbreaks. From the outset, the epidemiologic investigations directed the research towards viral contamination and shellfish as contamination source. Several outbreaks were investigated. Oysters and stools samples from ill patients were analysed by RT-PCR for viruses (enterovirus, rotavirus, norovirus and astrovirus). The genic amplification was done by using the same primers in... |

Breeding Crassostrea gigas was conducted in three rivers of Morbihan (Brittany France). During one year, every four months, their increasement was examined. In one of these rivers, oysters showed, however their age and their origin, an abnormal increasement. Shells were very thick, with many chambers. At the opposite, in the two others rivers, oysters did not show that disordered state. Shells were sound and their linear increasement was harmonious |

Triploid oysters Crassllstrea gigas were: produced in 1990 by treating fertilized eggs with cytochalasin B (CS). Triploids, treated diploids, and controls were deployed early 1991 in a high carrying capacity ecosystem on the Eastern Coast of Normandy (France). A monthly monitoring in 1992 showed that triploids yielded significantly higher growth rate and biochemical composition. However, growth was more heterogeneous. No evidence was found for a length or weight bimodal frequency distribution within triploid groups after a 26 months rearing cycle. Triploids showed retardation of gametogenesis. Carbohydrates content in triploids remained almost constant (40%) from June to September. Their survival rates were significantly lower than controls. Moreover... |

Temperature affects undoubtedly the 3 working sites where, systematically, the observation of the first abnormal mortalities coincides with a water temperature of around 19°C. The nature of the processes implied could have a "cumulative" effect, affecting the physiology (this phenomenon has been observed with other marine species) or a "threshold" effect, acting only as a trigger. The question has not been answered yet. The kinetics of the thermic evolution around the mortality period has to be studied in depth in order to understand if this temperature acts more as an "associated factor", during a chronic stress period, or during an acute stress, as suggested by the "on-bottom/off bottom" mortality model of the Marennes Oléron Bay [12]. |

The evolution of the production of cupped oysters is estimated on a century (1885-1985) with three different sources of data. The total biomass in culture is calculated from productions by knowing regularly the growing rate and the mortality rate of the populations of oysters. It appears that the efficiencies of the culture (P/B) decrease when the stock increase. The production reaches a plateau maximum of 40 000 tons whereas the stock goes on to growth up to 200 000 tons. This plateau correspond to the maximal capacity of production of the ecosystem limited by the trophic capacities of the bay. This work shows that without management of the cultivated oysters, the stocks tend to exceed the minimal biomass which is necessary to reach the maximal potential... |

In order to improve oyster culture, many research programs try and propose new methods aiming at improving genetically the product performances and quality (selection, polyploidisation). As for terrestrial animal production, the continuity of the different works as well as the spreading of the genetical progress would be made easier by the development of conservation techniques of the selected genotypes. Cryopreservation, which is often used in selection programs of terrestrial animals or fish farming species, is not always available for bivalves. This technique would enable the conservation of the gametes of individuals selected for their high growth potential, their resistance to diseases and/or their quality for a smaller cost and less risks than the... |
