This paper offers a novel interpretation of the introduction of floodplain rehabilitation and rural development into the water policy for the Tisza River in Hungary. It looks at the role of individuals and the strategies that they used to bring about water policy change. Five strategies are explored: developing new ideas, building coalitions to sell ideas, using windows of opportunity, playing multiple venues and orchestrating networks. Our discussion on the importance of each strategy and the individuals behind it is based on interviews, group discussions and a literature review. The international and political attention sparked by a series of floods, dike failure and a major cyanide spill, which preceded national elections, opened a window of opportunity... |

Seventy-nine faecal samples from calves with diarrhoea were collected on 52 farms from different counties in Hungary to investigate the species, genotypes and subtypes of Cryptosporidium in calves. Oocysts from faecal sample collected from each animal were concentrated using sucrose gradient centrifugation and examined by immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Genomic DNA was extracted from microscopically positive samples and nested PCR was performed to amplify the partial SSU rRNA and GP60 genes of Cryptosporidium that were subsequently digested by SspI, VspI and MboII restriction enzymes to determine the Cryptosporidium species and genotype present. Cryptosporidium parvum was detected in 21 samples while the Cryptosporidium deer-like genotype was found in... |

The organic markets in Western European countries like Germany and Middle and Eastern European countries like Hungary and Czech Republic are at different levels of development. While in Germany the per capita consumption of organic food in 2002 was app. € 32 in the Czech Republic the corresponding value was app. € 0,50 and in Hungary app. € 0,39. The paper describes and analyses the results of store-checks conducted in outlets of selected retail chains in the named three countries. Main objective is to compare marketing activities of conventional retail chains, as main driving actor group for the market development, with regard to organic products. |

Retail market consolidation and its effects on micro enterprises and corner shops present a long-term challenge to the Hungarian retail grocery market. The authors hope this study will help the concerned parties deal with this challenge. The study is one of the first attempts at a comprehensive analysis, and employs concentration tables and concentration ratios. It is based on a database from all businesses, including partnerships and individual entrepreneurs, and focuses on the quantifiable trends and the magnitude of market concentration regarding retail sales and specific areas affected by the consolidation process. Our research revealed that, by 2004, concentration in the retail food market was at a high level, considerably higher than the overall... |

Intra-industry trade in agri-food products between Hungary and the EU is shown to be low and dominated by vertically rather than horizontally differentiated products, suggesting higher economic adjustment costs. Following recent empirical studies, we then test econometrically for the determinants of this trade using different measures of horizontal and vertical trade, and employing an array of popular explanatory variables. Results suggest that separating the measure of intra-industry trade into vertical and horizontal provides for better estimation and supports the contention that the determinants may differ by type of trade. In the regression analysis, the level of intra-industry trade is found to serve as a better dependent variable than the degree or... |
