The deep-sea fish leech Bathybdella sawyeri Burreson has recently been collected from two sites on the South East Pacific Rise at approximately 14 degrees and 17 degrees S, 2623 - 2586 m depth. Leeches were obtained from washings of vent mussels Bathymodiolus thermophilus (Mytilidae) and clams Calyptogena magnifica (Vesicomyidae) collected with a grab by a submersible, or were found attached to the cheliped of the crab Cyanagraea praedator (Bythograeidae) collected in baited traps at 14 S. Most individual leeches had morphology typical of B. sawyeri as originally described, with suckers of approximately equal size, but all specimens collected from the crab C. praedator had unusually large oral suckers that were distinctly larger than the caudal sucker.... |

The Eiffel Tower edifice is situated in the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field at a mean depth of 1690 m on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). At this 11-m-high hydrothermal structure, different faunal assemblages, varying in visibly dominant species (mussels and shrimp), in mussel size and in density of mussel coverage, were sampled biologically and chemically. Temperature and sulphide (Sigma S) were measured on the different types of mussel-based assemblages and on a shrimp-dominated assemblage. Temperature was used as a proxy for calculating total concentrations of CH4. Based on the physico-chemical measurements, two microhabitats were identified, corresponding to (i) a more variable habitat featuring the greatest fluctuations in environmental variables... |

Cultural and molecular approaches were used to analyse the microbial assemblages associated to the deep-sea hydrothermal vent polychaete worms of the family Alvinellidae. In a first part of the work, the populations associated to three alvinellid species from the Juan de Fuca Ridge (Paralvinella palmiformis, Paralvinella pandorae and Paralvinella sulfincola) were identified by phylogenetic analyses. A wide microbial diversity was detected, like a great number of new sequences or of sequences belonging to species previously unidentified at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. All the libraries were found to be dominated by sequences affiliated to the epsilon-Proteobacteria. In other respects, fermentative micro-organisms belonging to the Thermococcales, the... |

Recent studies indicate that ammonia is an important electron donor for the oxidation of fixed nitrogen, both in the marine water column and sediments. This process, known as anammox, has so far only been observed in a large range of temperature habitats. The present study investigated the role of anammox in hydrothermal settings. During three oceanographic expeditions to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, hydrothermal samples were collected from five vent sites, at depths ranging from 750 to 3650m from cold to hot habitats. Evidence for the occurrence of anammox in these particular habitats was demonstrated by concurrent surveys, including the amplification of 16S rRNA gene sequences related to known anammox bacteria, ladderanes lipids analysis and measurement of a... |

Introduction : Since the discovery of animal communities in oceanic hydrothermal vents in 1977 and in deep-sea cold seeps in 1984 (Londsdale, 1977; Paull et al., 1984) fishes have been regularly observed in association with these chemosynthetically-driven communities, but in most cases they are difficult to catch and therefore species identification can only rely on images taken by the diving vehicles. Ichthyological information pertaining to species inhabiting the deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps is mentioned in over 30 papers and even in the more detailed and updated lists (Geistdoerfer, 1991; 1996; 1999; Sibuet & Olu, 1998; Tunnicliffe, 1991) there are species missing. The situation is even less clear concerning the bathyal species... |

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are considered as some of the most adverse environments in the world, yet the animals dwelling around the vent sites exhibit high productivity and therefore must cope with unusual levels of heavy metals, pH, temperature, CO2 and sulfide, in addition to environmental microbes. In an attempt to understand the physiological reactions of animals normally set to endure extreme conditions we investigated molecular indicators of acclimation processes during which the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus was maintained over long periods of time under without methane and/or sulfide supplementation, vent mussels seem to endure well aquarium conditions. The presence and induction of a Rel Homology Domain containing gene was investigated along... |

On the basis of previous studies at 9 degrees N and 13 degrees N East Pacific Rise (EPR) fields, we discuss the general assumption that temperature is a proxy for sulfide in vent fauna habitat. The main conclusion of these works is illustrated here through selected examples. In situ measurements were used to assess the variability of chemical parameters as function of temperature at the scale of fauna aggregations. Over a single vent site, aggregations of mussels or Riftia pachyptila discretely distributed around diffuse vents exhibit, in first assumption, similar sulfide-temperature correlation. In contrast, sulfide is much higher, for a given temperature, in the habitat of alvinellids than in neighboring habitats of Riftia pachyptila. Some consistency in... |

A novel sulfur-reducing bacterium, strain K6013(T), was isolated from a sulfide sample collected at a depth of 2771 m from a high-temperature hydrothermal vent in the Indian Ocean. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, anaerobic, motile rods (0.92.2 x 0.4-0.6 mu m). The strain grew at NaCl concentrations ranging from 1 to 4.5% (w/v) (optimum 2.5 %), at pH 5 to 8 (optimum pH 6), and at temperatures between 40 and 75 degrees C (optimum 65 degrees C). K6013(T) was an obligate chemolithoautotroph, using thiosulfate, sulfur and nitrate as terminal electron acceptors in the presence of H-2 but not sulfate, sulfite nor nitrite. The major cellular fatty acids were C-16 : 0 (17.4 %), C-18 : 1 omega 7c/C-18 : 1 omega 6c (ummed feature 8, 37.91 %), C-18 : 0 (18.29 %) and... |

The structure of the extracellular polysaccharide produced by the mesophilic species, Alteromonas infernus, found in deep-sea hydrothermal vents and grown under laboratory conditions, has been investigated using partial depolymerization, methylation analysis, mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. The repeating units of this polysaccharide is a nonasaccharide with the following structure: [GRAPHICS] (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Kosmotoga pacifica strain SLHLJ1T is a thermophilic chemoorganoheterotrophic bacterium isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal sediment. It belongs to the physiologically homogeneous Thermotogaceae family. Here, we describe the phenotypic features of K. pacifica together with its genome sequence and annotation. The chromosome has 2,169,170 bp, organized in one contig. A total of 1897 candidate protein-encoding genes and 177 RNA genes were identified. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain is distantly related to sequences of some relatives classified in the same genus (K. olearia 7.02% and K. shengliensis 7.83%), with dissimilarity percentages close to the threshold generally described for genus delineation. Nevertheless, the percentage of conserved... |
