The Mathematical Biology of Human Infections Ecology and Society
Nowak, Martin A; Institute for Advanced Study; nowak@ias.edu.
Humans are constant victims of infectious diseases. Biomedical research during this century has led to important insights into the molecular details of immune defense. Yet, many questions relating to disease require a quantitative understanding of the complex systems that arise from the nonlinear interactions between populations of immune cells and infectious agents. Exploration of such questions has lead to a newly emerging field of mathematical biology describing the spread of infectious agents both within and between infected individuals. This essay will discuss simple and complex models of evolution, and the propagation of virus and prion infections. Such models provide new perspectives for our understanding of infectious disease and provide guidelines...

L'adaptation ecophysiologique et sanitaire de l'ecrevisse turque Astacus leptodactylus a des milieux saumatres: Contribution a l'astaciculture ArchiMer
Barbe, D; Lautier, J; Vernet, G; Vey, A.
This influence of salt media on different aspects of biological cycle and on most common pathogenic agents of Turkish freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus is investigated survival and growing of juveniles O super(+) and intermediary individuals 1 super(+) are also studied. Total osmotic metabolism and reproduction, have been recorded. It appears that youngest individuals are particularly sensitive to low salinities (7 ppt.). Intermediary ones are more resistant nevertheless salinity does not improve neither survival nor growing. Copulation, laying and pleopod egg fixation are particularly affected by salt waters. The only promising application of salinity parameter on astaciculture could be whether prophylactic or curative treatment with concentrated...

Appearance and spread of diseases among bivalve molluscs in the northern hemisphere in relation to international trade ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
Bivalve mollusc culture is a well-developed marine aquaculture activity in many countries around the world, notably in the northern hemisphere. During the development of this activity, numerous countries have been confronted with infectious diseases of varying severity and duration. Research has been conducted to determine the aetiology, epidemiology and control measures for these epizootics. Major epizootics in bivalve molluscs have been caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoan parasites. Moreover, important commercial relations exist in marine mollusc culture between different geographical areas. This must be taken into account in explaining the appearance and the spread of some infectious diseases in several countries around the world. The...

Diseases of cultured molluscs in Australia ArchiMer
Lester, R.
Three mollusc species are cultured commercially in Australian tropical and warm temperate waters: the Sydney rock oyster Saccostrea commercialis , the pearl rock oyster is susceptible to two protozoans: Marteilia sydneyi , which is the cause of QX Disease and infects oysters during the summer; and Mikrocytos roughleyi which is associated with winter mortality. It also harbours mudworm, Polydora websteri a parasite farmers try to avoid by growing oysters on racks. Transported pearl oysters Pinctada maxima die with heavy infections of Vibrio harveyi . Cultured giant clams Tridacna gigas are pestered by pyramidellid snails and some carry Perkinsus sp., a protozoan common in reef bivalves. Deaths in mollusc hatcheries have been associated with Vibrio tubiashi...

Infectious pathology in mollusc and shrimp hatcheries ArchiMer
Mialhe, Eric.
Development of aquaculture has been linked to zootechnical mastering of larval production in hatcheries. Regular and excessive use of antibiotics (antifungal or antibacterial) may thus also be reduced, permitting to limit release of these products in sea-water and, consequently, avoiding progressive selection of resistant-strains.

Antimicrobial activity of a marine isolate of Pseudomonas cepacia k2 from ruditapes decussatus OceanDocs
Chahad Bourouni, O.; Ktari, L.; Boudabbous, A.; El Bour, M..

OceanDocs
Campa, A.I..

Selected bacterial strains protect Artemia spp. from the pathogenic effects of Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 OMA
Verschuere, L.; Heang, H.; Criel, G.R.J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
In this study Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 has been identified as a virulent pathogen for Artemia spp. Its infection route has been visualized with transmission electron microscopy. The pathogen affected microvilli and gut epithelial cells, disrupted epithelial cell junctions, and reached the body cavity, where it devastated cells and tissues. In vivo antagonism tests showed that pre-emptive colonization of the culture water with nine selected bacterial strains protected Artemia juveniles against the pathogenic effects. Two categories of the selected strains could be distinguished: (i) strains providing total protection, as no mortality occurred 2 days after the experimental infection with V....

Aerobic bacteria in oral cavity of Lancehead snakes (Bothrops atrox) with stomatitis Biological Sciences
Pereira, Heloisa Castro; Gomes, Dayane Olímpia; Hirano, Líria Queiroz Luz; Santos, André Luiz Quagliatto; Lima, Anna Monteiro Correia.
Stomatitis is a common disease found on snake farms, and Gram-negative bacilli are the main etiological agents that play an important role as secondary sources of viral or parasitic infections. The purpose of this work was to identify the aerobic bacteria in the oral cavity of Bothrops atrox with stomatitis. Samples for microbiological examination were collected from 12 snakes bred on a commercial snake farm for venom extraction. Samples of the secretion in the oral cavity of each serpent presenting stomatitis were collected from fang sheath, using a cotton swab with sterile alginate. The samples were incubated and cultured on Petri dishes containing blood agar and XLD agar using the agar depletion technique. Bacterial growth occurred in all analyzed...

Mechanism of action of probiotics BABT
Hemaiswarya,S; Raja,R.; Ravikumar,R.; Carvalho,Isabel S..
The modern diet doesn't provide the required amount of beneficial bacteria. Maintenance of a proper microbial ecology in the host is the main criteria to be met for a healthy growth. Probiotics are one such alternative that are supplemented to the host where by and large species of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces are considered as main probiotics. The field of probiotics has made stupendous strides though there is no major break through in the identification of their mechanism of action. They exert their activity primarily by strengthening the intestinal barrier and immunomodulation. The main objective of the study was to provide a deep insight into the effect of probiotics against the diseases, their applications and proposed mechanism of...

ABSTRACT The Choosing Wisely Initiative aims to collect statements from medical societies all over the world on medical interventions that result in no benefit to patients, with the potential to cause harm. In this article we present the views of the Diagnostic Laboratory Group at the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI). Ten experts from SBI were asked to list 10 diagnostic tests that were perceived as unnecessary in the field of infectious diseases. After voting for the more relevant topics, a questionnaire was sent to all SBI members, in order to select for the most important items. A total of 482 votes were obtained, and the top 10 results are shown in this manuscript. The Choosing Wisely statements of SBI should facilitate clinical practice...

Health surveillance, biosafety and emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases in Brazil BJID
Cardoso,Telma Abdalla de Oliveira; Navarro,Marli BM de Albuquerque; Costa Neto,Cristina; Moreira,Josino Costa.
The present paper presents compulsory notification data for infectious diseases and epidemiologic ones recorded at the Center for Strategic Information and Health Surveillance (CIEVS) for the period of March 2006 to April 2007. Data is presented in accordance with geographic distribution, time and risk classification of the etiologic agents found, according to Ministry of Health regulations. The importance of this epidemiologic surveillance system is presented, debating the main topics required for quality improvement and information analysis. It is concluded, from the analysis of epidemiologic events and their relation to risk management, that the compulsory notification system in Brazil is incomplete, irregular, delayed and, in a large percentage of...

Immunogenetics and infectious diseases: special reference to the mayor histocompatibility complex BJID
Alves,Crésio; Souza,Thaisa; Meyer,Isadora; Toralles,Maria Betânia P.; Brites,Carlos.
Many studies have tried to identify genetic markers for infectious diseases, some of them have focused on human leukocyte antigens (HLA). The products of HLA genes interact with surface-specific receptors of T lymphocytes, resulting in activation of the host's immune response. Association of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections with the host's HLA has been widely investigated. The type and strength of this association differs among distinct populations, as well as among racial and/or ethnic groups. The new molecular methods for the identification of the HLA alleles, and the resulting new nomenclature, have contributed to a better understanding of this system. Unfortunately, this information has not been adequately transmitted to clinicians,...
