INTEGRATED DATA AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM OF THE MARINE RESEARCH INSTITUTION For the effective and productive work with data, each scientist working in the research marine institution needs first of all a full convenient access to his/her institution data obtained him/her self as well as to historical data and information ever collected in the institution including the concomitant data from different disciplines and any publications including “gray literature”. To minimize time necessary to find, collect and analyze all required data and information, it is desirable to have them loaded into the integrated data and information management system (InDIMS). Up-to-date information system has to provide as well a connection with the correspondent data... |

All snakebites registered in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, between 2001 and 2006 were analyzed. Of these, the snake species involved was identified in 2,431 cases, most of which were caused by Bothrops (2,347). Most victims were male (78.4%) and the age group most frequently attacked was between 20 and 39 years (38.4%). As for severity, 1,118 (45.9%) were classified as minor, 748 (30.7%) as moderate, and 209 (8.6%) as severe. Progression towards complete cure occurred in 1,567 patients; 39 had sequelae; three died; and clinical outcomes were not monitored in 822 cases. The time between bite and first medical attention was less than three hours in 74.6% of cases. Most occurred in municipalities with vast areas of preserved Atlantic Forest: Angra dos Reis... |

Being distant from Brazil's great natural diversity, from its long tradition in the study of snakebites and from the fact that it is one of the few countries which has a national information system for monitoring incidents involving venomous animals, non-Brazilian researchers face risks when estimating the incidence of these accidents in the country. The present work offers a critical review of the main estimates undertaken since 1954. It is interesting to note contradictions between textual and graphic information within the same article, variations over time in the work of a same researcher and differences among distinct authors, and that all these issues remain unmentioned or undiscussed. Comparison among such estimates and the data available at the... |

IOC Project Office for IODE. |
The third meeting of the Joint Steering Group for the IODE Ocean Data Portal (ODP) and the JCOMM Pilot Project for WIGOS was held at the Project Office of the IOC International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) in Ostend, Belgium from 1 to 3 November 2010. The meeting reviewed the status of the WIGOS, including the WIGOS Concept of Operations (CONOPS), the WIGOS test of concept Development and Implementation Plan (WDIP), the WIGOS Development and Implementation Strategy (WDIS), and the status of the WIGOS Demonstration Projects. The meeting also reviewed the status of the JCOMM Pilot Project itself, and addressed outstanding issues, including (i) interoperability of ocean data systems with the IODE Ocean Data Portal and/or the WMO... |

The original IOTC database was developed in Microsoft Access, a desktop DBMS. As the size and number of simultaneous users connected to the database grew, it became obvious that it was necessary to shift the database to a Client/Server system, capable of attending high-load requests from concurrent users over a network. In addition, during the normal use of the database several limitations of the original design were detected, particularly in terms of framework rigidity. To address these problems, a new design based on the Client/Server paradigm was implemented. This document describes the new design, and discusses the concepts and objectives on which the new design was based. The new data base design was implemented on Microsoft SQL server and is... |
