Net economic impacts of achieving maximum economic yield in fisheries AgEcon
Norman-Lopez, Ana; Pascoe, Sean.
Improving the economic performance of fisheries is becoming increasingly important in fisheries management, and in some cases, maximum economic yield (MEY) is set as a key management target. However, associated with MEY is a level of fishing activity that is lower than would otherwise occur, even in fisheries managed to achieve the maximum sustainable yield. This will result in losses in economic activity elsewhere in the economy, potentially resulting in a net loss to society in the short to medium term. In this paper, an input-output framework is used to estimate the net economic impact of achieving MEY in Australian fisheries. While incomes are reduced in other sectors of the economy, the net impact of achieving MEY in fisheries is dependent on how...

The Impact of Minimum Wage Increases on Food and Kindred Products Prices: An Analysis of Price Pass-Through AgEcon
Lee, Chinkook; O'Roark, Brian.
An input-output model is used to analyze price pass-through effects of a minimum wage increase on prices of the food and kindred products and food-service industries. These sectors employ a disproportionate share of minimum wage workers, but results suggest a $0.50 increase in the present minimum wage would increase food prices less than 1 percent for most of the 12 food and kindred products prices and 1 percent at eating and drinking places.

Is There a Link between the Changing Skills of Labor Used in U.S. Processed Food Trade and Rural Employment? AgEcon
Schluter, Gerald E.; Lee, Chinkook.
Between the 1970s and the 1990s, processed food exports switched from using more skilled labor per unit of output than imports to the opposite. Processed food trade also expanded during this period. More meat and poultry products in processed food trade could explain this switch in skill intensity. Growing meat trade paralleled an urban-to-rural shift in meat processing. Although this could have been a win-win situation for rural areas, many of the jobs related to expanded meat trade benefited commuter and migrant workers because late-1990s jobs slaughtering livestock and processing meat did not appeal to domestic rural workers.

Economic Impact of Wildlife-Associated Recreation Expenditures in the Southeast United States: A General Equilibrium Analysis AgEcon
Hussain, Anwar; Munn, Ian A.; Holland, David W.; Armstrong, James; Spurlock, Stanley R..
The economic impact of wildlife-associated recreation in the Southeast United States was evaluated using a general equilibrium model. Exogenous demand shocks to the regional economy were based on estimates of expenditures by wildlife recreationists on hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching activities. Counterfactual simulations were carried out, making alternative assumptions about labor and capital mobility and their supply. Without wildlife-associated recreation expenditures, regional employment would have been smaller by up to 783 thousand jobs, and value added would have been $22 to $48 billion less. These findings underscore the significance of regional factor market conditions in economic impact and general equilibrium analysis.

THE IMPACT OF INTERMEDIATE INPUT PRICE CHANGES ON FOOD PRICES: AN ANALYSIS OF "FROM-THE-GROUND-UP" EFFECTS AgEcon
Lee, Chinkook.
The impact of intermediate input price increases on food prices is analyzed assuming the producers can pass through increased production costs to final consumers. Five scenarios of input price increases are empirically examined. Findings indicate that the meat processing sector has a strong dependence on intermediate inputs (livestock), and an increase in livestock prices would have a greater impact on processed meat prices than would any other intermediate input price increases. Price increases in the service sector would result in overall price increases in food prices comparable to increases in intermediate agricultural commodities. Further, price increases in nondurable goods have more influence on food price increases than durable goods.

Public Expenditure and International Specialisation AgEcon
Brulhart, Marius; Trionfetti, Federico.
It is widely recognised that public-sector purchasers tend to discriminate in favour of domestic suppliers. We study the consequences of home-biased public procurement on international specialisation. In the theoretical analysis we find two effects. First, a country will specialise in the sector for which it has relatively large home-biased procurement (the "pull" effect). Second, home-biased procurement can counter agglomeration forces and thereby attenuate the overall degree of international specialisation (the "spread" effect). Our empirical analysis, conducted on input-output data for the European Union, yields supporting evidence for the pull effect and some support for the spread effect. Es ist hinlänglich bekannt, dass Käufer aus dem öffentlichen...

Agriculture’s inter-industry linkages, aggregation bias and rural policy reforms AgEcon
Lindberg, Gunnar; Midmore, Peter; Surry, Yves R..
As agricultural policy reform and its effects have become increasingly territorialised, analyses which attempt to explain or predict impacts need to be more localised but also identify spillover effects. In addition to the predictions of policy shocks predicted by sectoral partial equilibrium models, local and regional general equilibrium approaches which establish the wider effects of such policy shocks have become popular. However, these neglect a major, underexplored difficulty: agriculture is usually described as a single sector in input-output accounts, whereas policy shocks with differential impacts have effects on other industries which are different to those implied by average input-output coefficients. Regionalisation of aggregated input-output...

EFFECTS OF RESERVOIR AQUATIC PLANT MANAGEMENT ON RECREATIONAL EXPENDITURES AND REGIONAL ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AgEcon
Bergstrom, John C.; Teasley, R. Jeff; Cordell, H. Ken; Souter, Ray A.; English, Donald B.K..
Exotic aquatic plant management is a major concern for public reservoir management in many regions of the United States. A study was conducted to measure the effects of alternative aquatic plant management strategies on recreational expenditures and regional economic activity. The study areas was Lake Guntersville, Alabama, and the local economy surrounding the lake. Lake Guntersville is one of the largest reservoirs in the Tennessee Valley Authority system. Results suggested the relatively moderate levels of aquatic plant control are associated with the highest levels of recreation-related economic effects on the economy surrounding Lake Guntersville.

Regional input-output analysis: application on rural regions in Germany, the Czech Republic and Greece AgEcon
Semerak, Vilem; Zigic, Kresimir; Loizou, Efstratios; Golemanova-Kuhar, Antoaneta.
While agriculture definitely is a traditional and important sector of national economy, it is also a sector the importance of which is often underestimated. More correct and realistic description of its economic role should be based on input-output methods. Unfortunately regional level input-output tables are only rarely available. We therefore apply modified GRIT regionalization methodology on a remote rural NUTS 2 level region in three different countries (Germany, Greece, and the Czech Republic respectively) and demonstrate that this approach makes regional-level input-output analysis a viable tool in realistic evaluation of contribution of the agri-food production chain for local economies. We provide empirical results that enable us to describe the...

The use of computable general equilibrium models to assess water policies AgEcon
Berck, Peter; Robinson, Sherman; Goldman, George E..
This paper discusses basic issues in project analysis and shows how these issues can be resolved in a computable general equilibrium (CGE) framework. The role of border prices and intersectoral linkages is explored. The CGE framework is compared to less comprehensive frameworks, including benefit-cost analysis, input-output models, multi-market models, and models based on social accounting matrices (SAMs). An illustrative CGE model of the southern portion of the San Joaquin Valley is constructed and is used to find the effects of reducing water inputs on aggregate Valley gross domestic product (GDP) and on sectoral output, employment, and land use. The model is also used to determine demand curves for water by the southern portion of the Valley, given...
